After more than 10 years of gathering and analyzing data produced by the U.S. Department of Energy's Tevatron collider, scientists from the CDF and DZero collaborations have found their strongest indication to date for the long-sought Higgs particle. Squeezing the last bit of information out of 500 trillion collisions produced by the Tevatron for each experiment since March 2001, the final analysis of the data does not settle the question of whether the Higgs particle exists, but gets closer to an answer.
The Tevatron scientists unveiled their latest results on July 2, two days before the highly anticipated announcement of the latest Higgs-search results from the Large Hadron Collider in Europe.
"The Tevatron experiments accomplished the goals that we had set with this data sample," said Fermilab's Rob Roser, cospokesperson for the CDF experiment at DOE's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. "Our data strongly point toward the existence of the Higgs boson, but it will take results from the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider in Europe to establish a discovery."
Scientists of the CDF and DZero collider experiments at the Tevatron received a round of rousing applause from hundreds of colleagues when they presented their results at a scientific seminar at Fermilab. The Large Hadron Collider results will be announced at a scientific seminar at 2 a.m. CDT on July 4 at the CERN particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland.
"It is a real cliffhanger," said DZero co-spokesperson Gregorio Bernardi, physicist at the Laboratory of Nuclear and High Energy Physics, or LPNHE, at the University of Paris VI & VII. "We know exactly what signal we are looking for in our data, and we see strong indications of the production and decay of Higgs bosons in a crucial decay mode with a pair of bottom quarks, which is difficult to observe at the LHC. We are very excited about it."
The Higgs particle is named after Scottish physicist Peter Higgs, who among other physicists in the 1960s helped develop the theoretical model that explains why some particles have mass and others don't, a major step toward understanding the origin of mass. The model predicts the existence of a new particle, which has eluded experimental detection ever since. Only high-energy particle colliders such as the Tevatron, which was shut down in September 2011, and the Large Hadron Collider, which produced its first collisions in November 2009, have the chance to produce the Higgs particle. About 1,700 scientists from U.S. institutions, including Fermilab, are working on the LHC experiments.
The Tevatron results indicate that the Higgs particle, if it exists, has a mass between 115 and 135 GeV/c2, or about 130 times the mass of the proton.
"During its life, the Tevatron must have produced thousands of Higgs particles, if they actually exist, and it's up to us to try to find them in the data we have collected," said Luciano Ristori, co-spokesperson of the CDF experiment and physicist at Fermilab and the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) . "We have developed sophisticated simulation and analysis programs to identify Higgs-like patterns. Still, it is easier to look for a friend's face in a sports stadium filled with 100,000 people than to search for a Higgs-like event among trillions of collisions."
The final Tevatron results corroborate the Higgs search results that scientists from the Tevatron and the LHC presented at physics conferences in March 2012.
The search for the Higgs particle at the Tevatron focuses on a different decay mode than the search at the LHC. According to the theoretical framework known as the Standard Model of Particles, Higgs bosons can decay in many different ways. Just as a vending machine might return the same amount of change using different combinations of coins, the Higgs can decay into different combinations of particles. At the LHC, the experiments can most easily observe the existence of a Higgs particle by searching for its decay into two energetic photons. At the Tevatron, experiments most easily see the decay of a Higgs particle into a pair of bottom quarks.
Tevatron scientists found that the observed Higgs signal in the combined CDF and DZero data in the bottom-quark decay mode has a statistical significance of 2.9 sigma. This means there is only a 1-in-550 chance that the signal is due to a statistical fluctuation.
"We achieved a critical step in the search for the Higgs boson," said Dmitri Denisov, DZero cospokesperson and physicist at Fermilab. "While 5-sigma significance is required for a discovery, it seems unlikely that the Tevatron collisions mimicked a Higgs signal. Nobody expected the Tevatron to get this far when it was built in the 1980s."
The Tevatron is one of eight particle accelerators and storage rings on the Fermilab site. The largest, operational accelerator at Fermilab now is the 2-mile-circumference Main Injector, which provides particles for the laboratory's neutrino and muon research programs.

He or she will take a look at your entire financial picture, including taxes, insurance, education goals, housing goals and retirement. Naturally, you will have to pay for the service.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? A glut has driven down lobster prices in Maine ? bringing cheer to lobster-loving consumers at the start of the state's tourist season but gloom among lobstermen.
Retailers have been selling small soft-shell lobsters in the Portland area for an unusually low $3.79 to $4.99 a pound. At those prices, lobsters have been selling for less than the per-pound price of bologna at many supermarket deli counters.
Zain Nemazie, of Austin, Texas, was expecting low lobster prices ? but not this low ? while on vacation in Maine with his family.
"This is as good as it gets," Nemazie said late last week after paying $4.59 a pound for large 1 1/2-pound lobsters at a seafood shop on Portland's waterfront. "We're from Texas, where we'd be paying at least $12 a pound."
At Docks Seafood in South Portland, owner Bob Coppersmith said customers were eating up the low prices, including a deal where he was selling five small live lobsters for $25. He later dropped it to five for $24.
"One gentleman came in and said, 'So I get five lobsters for $25. What's the catch?'" Coppersmith said. "I said there's no catch. He said, 'You're going to put five lobsters in a bag and not weigh them and give me them to me for 25 bucks?' He just couldn't believe it."
The Fourth of July represents the unofficial start to Maine's tourist season, when out-of-state visitors begin arriving in earnest.
Typically, Independence Day also is when Maine's lobster catch begins picking up as lobsters begin shedding their hard shells in favor of new soft shells. Soft-shell lobsters have less meat than hard-shell ones, but they are easier to crack open ? it can be done by hand, no claw cracker needed ? and sell for a lower price.
This year, though, soft-shell lobsters began showing up in abundance in fishermen's traps weeks earlier than normal.
Most of those lobsters usually go to Canadian processors. But the processors haven't been able to handle the Maine catch because Canadian lobstermen had such strong catches during their spring season, resulting in a backlog, said Neal Workman, head of The Fisheries Exchange, a Biddeford company that tracks prices, catches and other market information for the lobster industry.
Supply right now far exceeds demand, resulting in a "perfect storm" for the industry, he said.
"Things are plugged up," Workman said.
Virtually all soft-shell lobsters are sold to processors or on the local market, because they're too fragile to ship long distances. The lobsters sold at retailers outside of New England are most often hard-shell lobsters, which command a premium price and are hardy enough to be shipped long distances.
For now, the excess supply in Maine has driven retail prices to under $4 a pound for the smallest of the soft-shell lobsters. Larger lobsters, and those that still have hard shells, are more expensive.
While consumers may be smiling, lobstermen are smarting because of the low prices ? between $2.50 and $3 a pound ? they're getting for their catches.
The fishing season is young and lobstermen are hopeful prices soon will rebound to their normal levels, said Patrice McCarron, executive director of the Maine Lobstermen's Association.
"The Fourth of July is a big boom in demand for us," she said. "We're going to see some lobsters move through the system, so there's hope that we'll see a balancing in the market once we get through the holiday demand and get back on track for a typical season.
"But there's definitely a lot of angst among harvesters."
With Independence Day around the corner, Pete McAleney of New Meadows Lobster, a lobster dealer in Portland, was using the low prices as a marketing opportunity.
"To heck with hot dogs and hamburgers, eat a lobster," McAleney said. "They're very affordable."

You knew it was coming. In truth, I think those in charge did a better job of picking this season?s All-Stars than they have in recent years. Still, I have some disagreements, even if none of them are quite as vehement as last season?s.
Austin Jackson (OF Tigers) ? Jackson?s DL stint probably cost him a roster spot, but he?s played in just as many games as Mike Trout this year and has the better OPS of the two at .945. In fact, he ranks sixth in the AL in OPS, and he?s played an outstanding center field for Detroit. Ideally, the AL would have found room for him, Trout and Adam Jones on the squad, but if one of them had to be left off, it should have been Jones.
Bryce Harper (OF Nationals) ? No, Harper didn?t necessarily deserve a roster spot on merit. But it?s not like he was far off, either, and he?d give a lot of people more reason to watch the All-Star Game. ?He probably would have been voted in as a starter had he been listed on the ballot. His .274/.346/.475 line is about as valuable as Jay Bruce?s .257/.327/.526, especially once one factors in that Bruce is putting up his numbers at Great American. There still could be room for him on the team if he wins the Final Vote, as seems likely.
James McDonald (RHP Pirates) ? Incredibly enough, the NL All-Star pitching staff will feature just one guy in the top six in the league in ERA and three of the top 11. Brandon Beachy and Ryan Dempster, Nos. 1 and 2 respectively, are on the DL, so they weren?t possibilities. No. 3 R.A. Dickey did get the nod. However, the next three on the list: Ryan Vogelsong, Johnny Cueto and McDonald, were all left out. I see McDonald as the biggest snub. Not only is he sixth in ERA, but he?s fourth in the league in WHIP. His three losses this year have all come in games in which the Pirates were shut out.
Johan Santana (LHP Mets) ? How many no-hitters does a guy have to throw to get some recognition? Santana is 10th in the NL in ERA ahead of All-Stars Gio Gonzalez, Stephen Strasburg, Wade Miley, Cole Hamels and Lance Lynn. I?d have gone with McDonald over Lynn, Santana over Miley and either Cueto or Madison Bumgarner over Hamels.
Edwin Encarnacion (1B-DH Blue Jays) ? The AL is carrying three designated hitters and still couldn?t find room for this guy? Encarnacion ranks seventh in the league in OPS and fifth in homers. He?s also struck out 70 times fewer than Adam Dunn.
Jake Peavy (RHP White Sox) ? In stark contrast to the NL, the AL managed to take its top five pitchers by ERA. Still, manager Ron Washington left off No. 6 in Peavy. Peavy also ranks fourth in WHIP and sixth in strikeouts, but he?s just 6-5 thanks to poor support. The White Sox probably didn?t want him pitching in the game anyway.
Jed Lowrie (SS Astros) ? Lowrie leads all shortstops in homers and is third in OPS behind the AL All-Star Asdrubal Cabrera and the injured Troy Tulowitzki. I don?t mind Jose Altuve as Houston?s All-Star, but on merit, the NL should have picked Lowrie over Starlin Castro.
Aar0n Hill (2B Diamondbacks) ? With Lowrie representing the Astros, Hill could have made the team over Altuve. Mr. Cycle?s .878 OPS is 75 points better than that of Altuve and 100 points better than that of any other NL second baseman.
Ernesto Frieri, Scott Downs (RP Angels) ? Frieri has pitched 23 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out 40 since arriving in Anaheim. Downs has a 0.35 ERA in 26 innings after finishing at 1.34 last year. I?d certainly rather rely on those two for matchup purposes late in the game than either Chris Perez or Joe Nathan.
Josh Willingham (OF Twins) ? Willingham has the AL?s 10th best OPS at .913, but he was a casuality of the fact that the AL is carrying three DHs in David Ortiz, Dunn and Billy Butler.
Paul Goldschmidt (1B Diamondbacks) ? If anyone deserves to play nine innings in the All-Star Game, it?s Joey Votto. Not only is he the NL?s best hitter, but there just weren?t any great options to back him up. Bryan LaHair was chosen as the team?s other first basemen, even though his numbers have taken a big nosedive of late. Adam LaRoche was more deserving, even if his .251/.338/.506 line is nothing special. My preferred choice, though, would have been Goldschmidt, who has shaken off a rough start to hit .293/.369/.542 in 225 at-bats.

APWill Hill is trying to convince the Giants he can play. Actually, the fact he?s talented has long been known, but his off-field issues kept him from making the NFL already.
As with many players with troubled pasts, Hill?s tale of redemption makes for a good story, and Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger has written an excellent one, detailing Hill?s checkered past and his attempt to put it behind him.
The former Florida safety scared teams off during the pre-draft process because of his general immaturity, but specifics which included a suspension at Florida, a series of Twitter posts talking about marijuana and prostitutes, a shady cast of friends he surrounded himself with and a run of bad interviews with teams he was supposedly trying to impress.
So he went undrafted. And unsigned after the draft. And largely ignored for a year, never even getting a practice-squad job.?Per Garafolo?s story, that seemed to humble Hill into making changes off the field. And after he impressed in a May tryout, the Giants are going to give him a chance in training camp.
And he may have landed in the perfect place for such a chance.
The Giants have shown an impressive ability to channel problem children, by putting them in a structured environment and surrounding them with more responsible teammates.
From Mario Manningham to Ahmad Bradshaw, they?ve taken chances on players others blanched at, and gotten positive results. That?s emboldened them to try with a few more, including third-round pick Jayron Hosley, who failed a drug test at the Combine and several others such as Hill who had their issues in college.
Giants general manager Jerry Reese said all were warned they?d be cut at the first indication of trouble, and admits he can?t know at the moment if players such as Hill are genuinely reformed.
?Well, I don?t know if he?s telling the truth. But I do know he?s felt the sting of not being on an NFL roster when he probably should be on one, as talented as he is,? Reese said. ?The sting of not having that and having to sit out and not being able to play, I think that helps you get your priorities straight.?
It also helps to land with a stable organization. While the Lions have rebounded in part by being willing to take on some questionable characters who can play, the long-term future of such a roster is unknown.
The Giants have a recent record of success, and a strong organization from Reese to coach Tom Coughlin, and that goes a long way toward being able to take chances, and mitigate the risks therein. But Reese isn?t just playing Father Flanagan. He wants good players.
And if Hill can be one, great. But if he screws up, he can be made example of, and that helps too.
