Court issues arrest warrant for Pakistani PM nominee

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - A court has issued an arrest warrant for the ruling party veteran poised to replace Pakistan's ousted prime minister, local television stations reported on Thursday, deepening political uncertainty in the strategic U.S. ally.

Pakistan's president had nominated Makhdoom Shahabuddin as the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) candidate in an apparent bid for continuity ahead of elections due early next year.

Shahabuddin, the textiles minister, filed his nomination papers on Thursday. The ruling coalition has a comfortable majority in parliament, which meets on Friday in an extraordinary session to elect a new prime minister.

In an unexpected twist to Pakistan's latest political saga, an anti-narcotics court issued an arrest warrant for Shahabuddin in connection with a case of violated quota limits for the export of ephedrine while he was health minister.

That case allegedly involved Gilani's son, Ali Musa Gilani, who is accused by anti-narcotics investigators of violating the quotas. Gilani and Shahabuddin have denied any wrongdoing.

Shahabuddin's nomination papers were approved by parliamentary authorities, but his bid for premiership could be undermined by the court orders.

He avoided questions from reporters about the court orders after filing his nomination papers, responding with only a line of poetry about adversity.

The PPP nominated two other candidates, former information minister Qamar Zaman Kaira and former water and power minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, as candidates for prime minister as well.

Leaders of the ruling coalition parties are meeting in Islamabad to further deliberate on their pick for prime minister after the warrant for Shahabuddin, adding to the drama in the build-up to Friday's vote in parliament.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday declared Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani ineligible for office for refusing to re-open corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari, triggering a new crisis in nuclear-armed Pakistan.

At the time, a senior aide to Gilani said only parliament could dismiss the prime minister, raising the possibility of a confrontation between the judiciary and government, but by nominating a new man the president has accepted the ruling and backed away from a fight.

PUBLIC FRUSTRATION

The new prime minister will face mounting public frustrations over a staggering range of problems, and a Supreme Court chief justice who prides himself on standing up to Pakistan's most powerful players.

Gilani's removal is likely to further heat up the Pakistani political arena, where the civilian leadership, the powerful military and the Supreme Court square off against each other at the expense of a public longing for stability and a stronger economy.

Shahabuddin's warrants were sought by Pakistan's Anti-Narcotics Force, a government body run by the military, and headed by a senior serving army officer. Analysts say the timing of the move is suspicious.

"To have so much movement so quickly on this case in one day is unusual. You don't usually see such efficiency in Pakistan, and the (Anti-Narcotics Force) is controlled by the army," said political analyst Hasan Askari Rizvi.

"It appears to a message that the army is also watching the process closely."

Pakistan's relations with the United States, which provides it with billions of dollars in aid, are at their lowest point in years.

Taliban militants still pose a major security threat, despite numerous army crackdowns. The economy is struggling and analysts predict Pakistan will again have to turn to the International Monetary Fund to keep it afloat.

Chronic power cuts, which triggered violent protests this week, show no signs of easing.

Shahabuddin, who enjoys smooth ties with coalition partners, was seen as a safe bet for the ruling Pakistan People's Party, which is gearing up for a general election due early next year.

But the former deputy finance minister will likely face the same pressures as did Gilani from Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry to reopen old corruption cases against Zardari.

Thousands of corruption cases were thrown out in 2007 by an amnesty law passed under former military president Pervez Musharraf, paving the way for a return to civilian rule.

Two years later, the Supreme Court ruled that agreement illegal, and ordered the re-opening of money laundering cases against Zardari that involved Swiss bank accounts.

Gilani and his government refused to obey the court's order to write to Swiss authorities asking them to look again at those cases, arguing that Zardari had immunity as the head of state.

The United States is hoping for stability in Pakistan so that Islamabad can engage Washington and work to improve ties damaged by a series of events, most recently a NATO cross-border raid in November which killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

Pakistan closed supply routes to NATO forces in Afghanistan to protest against the attack, and negotiations on re-opening the lines are deadlocked.

Small business professionals travel for business just as often as management consultants or corporate executives, so why shouldn?t they travel in style, comfort and convenience?

That?s where San Francisco-based?Uber,?founded by Travis Kalanick, drives in (ha..).

Uber is a mobile app for iPhone and Android smartphones that lets users hire a private driver at any time anywhere the service is available (At the time of publishing, Uber is available in 4/5 of the top U.S. cities visited by small business travelers.)

A private driver? Like in the Grey Poupon commercials?

Yes, but it?s BYOGP (Bring your own Grey Poupon).

Also, no foofy Rolls Royce. The Uber fleet includes?Lincoln Town Cars, Cadillac Escalades, BMW 7 Series, and Mercedes-Benz S550 sedans.

Here?s how Uber works:

1) Request an Uber. Hire a private driver using your Uber iPhone or Android app. Added bonus: you get to watch your black sedan on a map as it approaches your pickup location.

2) Ride like a BALLER (A person who finds success and wealth.). Uber sends you a text message with the estimated arrival time and once the car arrives at your pickup location. Tell the private driver your destination and hop into the black sedan.

3) Pay Automatically. Once you arrive at your destination, Uber will automatically charge the credit card on file on your account. No need to tip, as the driver gets paid by Uber. The fare is calculated one of two ways:?When traveling over 11 mph, Uber charges a distance fee. Below 11 mph, Uber charges a time fee.

Why would a small business owner or professional use Uber?

Business Travel. A buddy of mine travels extensively throughout the U.S. and uses Uber heavily, especially in Chicago and San Francisco. It?s easier for him to order an Uber on his mobile phone and have it waiting upon his arrival at the airport, office headquarters or client?s office. Uber?s online receipts are emailed to you and are easy to include as?expense receipts on client invoices.

Downtown Travel.?Another buddy of mine uses Uber in Chicago and NYC. He?s taken Uber to the office, to his condo, to the restaurants and to the gym. He prefers an Uber to a cab as its far more comfortable and convenient. It helps that he?s a?jet-setter, works in PR?and reminds me of a character in Mad Men.

In the Middle of Nowhere and/or No Taxi Cabs in Sight Travel. This is one of the biggest benefits of using Uber. While everyone is trying to hail a cab at the airport, the conference center or during rush hour downtown, you can order an Uber on your mobile phone and enjoy your time stress-free while waiting for your private drive to arrive. It?s also a time-saver if you live or work in one of those ?notoriously deserted areas to pick up a cab parts of town?.

Entertaining Clients. I spent a lot of time helping my dad entertain clients and suppliers in town from other parts of the U.S. and Canada. We would pile into my dad?s SUV at the window factory and park downtown at some overpriced parking garage. He spent his attention and energy on driving cautiously in the city in the middle of rush hour, instead of on his business guests. With Uber, you can ride in style, impress your customers and suppliers and actually relax on your night out on the town.

ADDED BONUS: Entertaining Spouse. Here?s a funny story. I?m stuck in traffic trying to find street parking (I didn?t feel like paying for valet) on the way to a popular restaurant for a friend?s birthday party. A black Lincoln Navigator suddenly stops in front of me and out hop the guests of honor! It was an Uber, of course. Why travel any other way on your birthday?
I?ve personally tried the service out twice and had mixed experiences.

The first time I used Uber was a magnificent experience.

It was hot outside and traffic was slammed. I could have ordered a cab, but wanted to try Uber out since it had recently arrive in Chicago. My private driver arrived and opened the door for me at State and Dearborn in Chicago. As soon as I hopped in, he had cold bottled water and mints waiting for me. He also had a fine selection of business papers, ranging from the Wall Street Journal to the Financial Times.

I spent the majority of my ride asking the driver questions about Uber. He had nothing but great things to say about it as he enjoyed meeting the business professionals using the service as well as the added income he earned from using Uber during downtimes of his normal private car bookings.

The second time I used Uber was a horrible experience.

My Uber driver arrived 35-40 minutes late, which in turn, meant that I arrived late to the event I was attending. That would have been fine, if it wasn?t for the smell of Big Mac and fries in the sedan. I was pretty annoyed as, not only was my driver late because he was getting dinner at McDonald?s, but he clearly scarfed it down in the car.

I smelled like Mickey D?s after the ride! Ha. Don?t feel bad for me, though, as Max Crowley from Uber apologized (ironically, he was at the same event!) and gave me a $5 or $10 credit for my bad experience, which I still haven?t used.

Nonetheless, the value of using Uber is clear and the car service is only?going to get better as the service gets feedback from drivers and users. If Uber is available in your city, try it out and don?t forget to write it off as a business expense.

With all this Miami/ OKC tension, why not put the signature food & drink of each city to a head to head match up. We?ll also give you the recipes for each, so you can put them to the test yourself.

Cuban Sandwich (also know as The Cubano)

Loaf of Cuban style bread (you can substitute with a bread that has a crispy crust and soft inside such as French or Italian bead or even a hoagie or sub roll)

1 pound ham

1 pound of sliced roasted pork

1 pound of Swiss cheese

3 tablespoons of traditional yellow mustard or hot & spicy whole grain yellow mustard (depending on how hot you like it)

20 dill pickle slices

Preheat sandwich press or skillet.

Slice the bread lengthwise.

Spread mustard on the inside of the bread then layer the pickles, ham,cheese and pork.

Put other slice of bread on top and slice into 3 sandwiches.

Add butter to an indoor grill or panini maker (we used our George Foreman grill) and grill sandwiches until cheese is melted and heated through and the bread is golden brown.

Cowboy Brisket Sandwich

6 pounds of cooked braised beef brisket. Recipe from Claire Robinson

Brisket Recipe

6 dinner rolls split in half (potato or onion rolls would also work)

Cook the brisket according to the recipe. Serve on soft rolls with Claire?s sauce on the side.

Miami Vice Drink

5 ounces Rum (we used Bacardi 151)
1 package of frozen pina colada mix concentrate
1 package frozen daiquiri mix concentrate
Ice

1. Blend pina colada concentrate with 2.5 oz. of rum and ice according to directions.

2. Blend daiquiri concentrate with 2.5 oz. of rum and ice according to directions.

3. While frozen, add frozen pina colada mix to a hurricane glass. Then add the frozen daiquiri mix on top.

Jack & Coke

Jack & Coke

2 oz. Jack Daniel?s Tennessee whiskey

10 oz. cold Coca-Cola

Pour Jack Daniel?s into a Collins glass filled with ice. Pour coca-cola into the glass. Stir together.

Chimichanga

6 larger flour tortillas
1 pound of ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat) or ground chicken or turkey
1 onion, diced
2 garlic gloves smashed
1 small can of green chiles, drained & diced
1 tablespoon cumin
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon paprika
Vegetable oil

In a skillet add a tablespoon of oil and saute garlic & diced onion until tender. Mix in the spices to the onion and oil in the pan stirring to heat them up. Then add the ground meat cooking all the way through. Add the diced green chiles. Set the filling aside.

Warm the tortillas either in the microwave or oven. Take each warm tortilla lay it flat & fill the center with the meat mixture. Be careful not to over fill the tortilla. Then roll up the tortilla as if you were making a burrito making sure to tuck the ends in. You can use tooth picks to make sure the ends of the tortilla is sealed shut.

Take a large pot and add at least 2 inches of oil to the bottom of the pan (may vary depending on size of pot) Once the oil is sizzling hot add two Chimichangas to the pan cooking until golden brown. Flip the Chimichanga to brown the other side then drain on a paper towel before serving.

Top the Chimichangas with shredded lettuce, diced tomato, shredded cheese, sour cream, salsa or enchilada sauce.

Mexican Tacos

6 taco shells
1 pound of ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat)
Home made taco seasoning (instead of the stuff in the packet): 1 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon Chili powder, 1 teaspoon paprika, pinch of garlic powder, pinch of Cayenne pepper, salt & pepper to taste

Toppings: Chopped tomatoes, shredded lettuce, green onions, sour cream, salsa, green chiles

Brown the ground beef in a skillet with oil. Once cooked through make sure to drain the extra fat. Add your taco seasoning to the meat mixing it in. Spoon meat mixture into your taco shells and load on your favorite taco toppers.
