When you were dating in your 20s, kids weren?t in the picture, so you didn?t have to juggle babysitters, think about ?when do I introduce him/her to my kids?, do we have our kids meet, I live on the North Shore, she?s on the South Shore, what if we develop a relationship?? What do we do about our kids school systems, where they have their friends.
When we were dating in the 90?s, there were no cell phones, the internet was in it?s infancy, we didn?t declare our relationships on FB, we couldn?t Google the person we were going out with, and there was no internet dating.?

Our dating experiences primarily happened ?organically?.? That is, we might have met someone when out with friends, or were ?fixed? up by friends.? We actually called them on the telephone to talk before the date, break the ice a bit.? We couldn?t Google them to learn about them before we went out with them.? Rather, if fixed up, we relied on your friends telling us what a great person he/she is, and we would have so much in common.? After the date, if we had no further interest, even if we said we would call, we wouldn?t call them, or, for the women, we wouldn?t return their calls.? For the men, if we really liked them, we might think:? how many days before I call her.? And for the women, if he hadn?t called in the next few days, did this mean he didn?t like me?
Now that were a Baby Boomer, many of us with kids, everything?s been turned on it?s head.? Women are just as likely to ask a man out.? Our network of friends who had acted as Matchmakers when we were in our 20s are now vested in their own lives, and the referrals have been drying out.? As we?ve advanced our careers, we?re less likely to date at the work place.? We have on-line dating and Dating Organizations to help facilitate meeting people.? Once matched with someone, we quickly run to Google them, or look at LinkedIn, to learn as much about them as possible.? We may try to find them on Facebook.
Then, after our first meeting (was it really a date or more a meeting to see if there might be chemistry), the texting begins.? Do I text her/him when I get home to let my date know I had a good time.? All too often, when at least one of the 2 people likes the other one, they begin texted way TOO much, starting with the next day.? Invariably it starts with a mild ?Had great time, looking forward to seeing you again?.? Later in the day, a text saying:? ?Thinking of you.? Hope you?re having a great day?.? Later that day, another text ?What did you do today??.??? Try to think of texting as how you would have acted 20 years ago when all we had was a phone.? You might phone her the next day to say you had a nice time, and would she like to go out again.? If she said yes, you would perhaps suggest a specific day, or say you would call her later in the week.? Today, it?s okay to text the next day and say that you had a nice time.? If she responds back positively, suggest that you?ll call her later in the week.? Use text sparingly.? Think about how we all get frustrated that our kids only text with us and don?t talk on the phone.

By blending optical and atomic force microscope technologies, Iowa State University and Ames Laboratory researchers have found a way to complete 3-D measurements of single biological molecules with unprecedented accuracy and precision.
Existing technologies allow researchers to measure single molecules on the x and y axes of a 2-D plane. The new technology allows researchers to make height measurements (the z axis) down to the nanometer ? just a billionth of a meter ? without custom optics or special surfaces for the samples.
"This is a completely new type of measurement that can be used to determine the z position of molecules," said Sanjeevi Sivasankar, an Iowa State assistant professor of physics and astronomy and an associate of the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory.
Details of the technology were recently published by the journal Nano Letters. Co-authors of the study are Sivasankar; Hui Li, an Iowa State post-doctoral research associate in physics and astronomy and an associate of the Ames Laboratory; and Chi-Fu Yen, an Iowa State doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering and a student associate of the Ames Laboratory.
The project was supported by lab startup funds from Iowa State University and a $120,075 grant from the Grow Iowa Values Fund, a state economic development program.
Sivasankar's research program has two objectives: to learn how biological cells adhere to each other and to develop new tools to study those cells.
That's why the new microscope technology ? called standing wave axial nanometry (SWAN) ? was developed in Sivasankar's lab.
Here's how the technology works: Researchers attach a commercial atomic force microscope to a single molecule fluorescence microscope. The tip of the atomic force microscope is positioned over a focused laser beam, creating a standing wave pattern. A molecule that has been treated to emit light is placed within the standing wave. As the tip of the atomic force microscope moves up and down, the fluorescence emitted by the molecule fluctuates in a way that corresponds to its distance from the surface. That distance can be compared to a marker on the surface and measured.
"We can detect the height of the molecule with nanometer accuracy and precision," Sivasankar said.
The paper reports that measurements of a molecule's height are accurate to less than a nanometer. It also reports that measurements can be taken again and again to a precision of 3.7 nanometers.
Sivasankar's research team used fluorescent nanospheres and single strands of DNA to calibrate, test and prove their new instrument.
Users who could benefit from the technology include medical researchers who need high-resolution data from microscopes. Sivasankar thinks the technology has commercial potential and is confident it will advance his own work in single molecule biophysics.
"We hope to use this technology to move that research forward," he said. "And in doing that, we'll continue to invent new technologies."

American gymnast Aly Raisman earned a gold medal for her athletic prowess in London. It's her mom who's gone viral.
NBC's video of Lynn Raisman watching her daughter perform on the uneven bars Sunday, with her nervous murmurs and face and body contortions, was the single most replayed moment on Tivo digital video recorders that night. It has even inspired a YouTube spoof.
The network doesn't have "parent cams" trained on the stands during every Olympic event. Moms and dads are featured only when they are relevant to the story lines, veteran NBC producer Molly Solomon said Thursday. But they've already been indelible parts of the network's coverage in the first few days of the London Games.
The parents of American gymnasts John Orozco and Dannel Leyva were palpable presences during that sport's coverage. The bronze medal-winning Leyva's dad was his coach and a bundle of energy. NBC introduced Orozco's parents in a segment that talked about the sacrifices they made in helping the Bronx athlete reach a high level of competition. When Orozco's dreams were shattered by some subpar performances, he was near tears, and his mother's face reflected similar agony.
"Can you imagine the emotions of watching your kid compete?" Solomon said. "To me it's part of the fabric of the story."
One of NBC's best moments came after South African Chad Le Clos unexpectedly beat American Michael Phelps in the butterfly. Americans by now are used to seeing Phelps' mom, Debbie, cheer her son's many medal-winning performances. This time the camera caught her in a double-take, first thinking it was another gold medal before learning her son had been beaten in the end.
NBC producer Dan Beard was in the stands and heard a man shouting, "That's my son! That's my son!" He quickly ordered cameras to catch video of Le Clos' sobbing father, his head wrapped in a South African flag. The parents with their contrasting emotions made for arresting images. It was much the same Thursday with Phelps' mother and Ryan Lochte's disappointed dad following their sons' final pool duel.
For many American athletes, NBC producers know the parents already through the research-gathering process leading up to the Olympics. Seemingly more athletes these days are teenagers, and their parents are the emotional and financial support system through years of training. A Procter & Gamble ad campaign for the Olympics focuses on just these sacrifices that moms make.
Not all parents are comfortable being a part of their child's moments. Solomon recalled a recent Winter Olympics where the parents of an ice dancing team asked that the cameras stay focused on their children. The mother of American ice skater Evan Lysacek is usually out of the arena, unable to watch her son perform live.
"If they don't want to be on camera, we are respectful of that," Solomon said.
NBC learns from Olympics officials where an athlete's family has seats before the competition takes place. There's always a double-check, with a researcher going up in the stands to make sure that information is correct.
Imagine the embarrassment of getting it wrong. Judging by many of the expressions, however, it's usually pretty easy to tell when they've got it right.
THIS CAME OUT WRONG: "Gabby is far and away the best bar worker in the United States," said NBC's Tim Daggett as gymnast Gabby Douglas began her uneven parallel bars performance.
TAPE DELAY: NBC says its researchers have found that people who learn the results from major competitions before NBC shows them on its tape-delayed prime-time coverage are more likely to watch them later. The fear that people would find out early and not bother to tune in has been the major assumption behind holding back live coverage during Olympics where time zones present a serious issue. Nielsen said that 30.8 million people watched Wednesday night's NBC show, as the games continue to do better on U.S. TV than the Beijing Olympics of 2008. NBC said all of its cable telecasts are seeing ratings increases from four years ago, too.
READY, AIM. ..: Archery is the hot Olympic sport. NBC said archery is the top-rated sport of all the ones it shows on its cable networks, higher even than basketball.
JUDO CHAMP: Heart-melting moment watching Ohio's Kayla Harrison win the first American gold medal in judo ever. As a sensitive report by NBC's Stephanie Gosk pointed out, Harrison kept with the sport despite being sexually abused for three years as a teenager by a former coach. Her last hurdle Thursday was facing British underdog Gemma Gibbons before a boisterous hometown crowd. The 22-year-old Harrison leaped into the stands after winning to hug her fiance, who draped her with an American flag as David Bowie's "Heroes" played in the background.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's Supreme Court on Friday struck down a law designed to protect the new prime minister from being charged with contempt and thrown out of office like his predecessor.
The ruling was the latest twist in a long-running saga that pits the country's judiciary against its ruling party, a showdown that many analysts say endangers Pakistan's fragile democracy.
The court ousted the previous prime minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, from office in June by charging him with contempt of court for failing to reopen corruption proceedings against President Asif Zardari.
The court gave the new prime minister, Raja Ashraf, until August 8, to respond to the court's demand that he write a letter reopening the corruption case.
In response, the government hastily passed a law declaring high-ranking officials immune from contempt of court proceedings.
But the court ruled that the law was unconstitutional because it eroded the court's authority.

Credit Scores: What you don?t know may hurt you?.??
First, let?s talk about credit scores. A credit score is a summary of the information in a credit report at the precise moment that it is reviewed. A credit score is not part of your credit history and does not appear on your personal credit report. There is a cost to obtain one?s credit score, and these costs vary from reporting agency to reporting agency.
A common question is, ?Are all businesses required to report to credit agencies?? The answer is ?no?.? You see, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) does not require businesses to report to any credit agency at all. Instead, businesses are free to report to one, two or all three of the Credit Reporting Agencies (bureaus) or not report at all.
Various companies choose to use credit scores from different credit scoring companies for different reason. For example, while a car salesman may refer to a Beacon Score when looking to finance you, a bank loan officer may refer to your FICO score. And a finance company may refer to a score called Fair Isaac.

Some people will ask why is there not just one credit score, and the answer is because the three largest credit reporting agencies (Trans Union, Equifax, and Experian) are competitors. They make money selling your scores; it?s a very profitable business. These credit scores are not free, despite the commercials of a FREE CREDIT SCORE. Below is an overview of a possible breakdown of the way a FICO score may be computed.??
35%: Payment history - Late payments on bills, such as a mortgage, credit card or automobile loan, will cause a FICO score to drop. Bills paid on time will improve a FICO score
30%: Credit utilization - The ratio of current revolving debt (such as credit card balances) to the total available revolving credit or credit limit.
15%: Length of credit history - As a credit history ages it can have a positive impact on its FICO score
10%: Types of credit used (installment, revolving, consumer finance, and mortgage) Consumers can benefit by having a history of managing different types of credit.
