Nelson, president of Sensei Enterprises, a computer forensics and technology firm based in Farifax, Va., and Tom Mighell, a lawyer and senior consultant with the Dallas-based firm Contoural, offered security tips for using laptops, smartphones and tablets over a public WiFi network. (Mighell was a last-minute stand-in for ABA Journal legal technology writer Dennis Kennedy, who couldn?t attend due to a health problem.)

Nelson cited a study showing that the number of wireless hotspots would grow more than fourfold to nearly 6 million by 2015.

While all lawyers know they have a duty to protect confidential data, she said, they too often regard the threat to confidentiality as more theoretical than real.

?We don?t like to be disconnected, but the more connected we are, the more we have to be careful about how we use? wireless technology, she said.

She and Mighell said users should make sure they are using a secure HTTPS protocol rather than the HTTP protocol and have a secure, 12-character alphanumeric password to log on to their laptops.

Mighell recommended a specific website called Shields Up, that will scan and determine the security vulnerabilities on your computer. He also said that while both Windows and Mac OSX operating systems have basic built-in firewall programs, they don?t offer enough protection.

Mighell also recommended turning off file-sharing unless there is a particular reason for having it on, and to have only one public folder for files that can be shared only when needed.

He and Nelson also recommended scanning your mobile device for malware after using any public WiFi network. And Mighell suggested investing in a good data loss protection program that will detect, monitor and prevent data from leaving your system.

Disputed painting revealed as a Van Gogh

High-energy radiation and some clever detective work have revealed that a supposedly anonymous painting was actually crafted by Vincent van Gogh. The painting, Still Life with Meadow Flowers and Roses, was painted over a painting of two half-naked wrestlers: Van Gogh's homework as an art student in Antwerp, Belgium.

Since 1974, the painting has lived at the Kr?ller-M?ller Museum in Otterlo, the Netherlands, which houses more than half of the known Van Gogh paintings. But the museum was never sure how to categorise it. The painting wasn't like Van Gogh's other floral still lifes: the canvas was much bigger than usual, and the flowers in the foreground were gaudier than normal for the artist. Since 2003, the painting had been listed as anonymous.

A key clue emerged in 1998, when X-ray examinations uncovered two human figures grappling with each other underneath the layers of flowers. Now, a new examination using high-energy ultraviolet and X-ray radiation from DESY, the German electron synchrotron lab in Hamburg, shows beyond a doubt that both layers on the canvas were Van Gogh's.

The back story emerged in some of van Gogh's letters to his brother, Theo. Van Gogh went to Antwerp in November 1885 to enrol in the art academy there and sharpen his technical skills. The instructor encouraged the 32-year-old painter to buy a large canvas - typical of the academy at the time, according to historians - and new brushes and paints.

Van Gogh, strapped for cash, wrote to Theo to ask for money. He wrote again a few weeks later to assure his brother the money had gone to good use: "This week I painted a large thing with two nude torsos - two wrestlers." He also said he was delighted with the result.

But he must not have been too delighted, because a few months later, he brought the canvas to Theo's place in Paris, France, and painted Still Life with Meadow Flowers and Roses (above) directly on top of the wrestlers, without scraping away the original paint or covering it with an intermediate layer first.

The fact that the wrestlers were a homework assignment explains the floral painting's oddities: the canvas was unusually large because that was the school's standard, and the flowers in the foreground were so ostentatious because they had to cover an entire half-naked boy.

The new synchrotron examination reveals more clinching details. The wrestlers were wearing pants, which was characteristic of the academy at Antwerp (other academies had students do completely nude figure studies). The radiation also showed that the pigments corresponded with van Gogh's at the time, and revealed his distinctive brush strokes.

On 20 March this year, the painting was moved to a place of honour in the museum, together with van Gogh?s Roses and Peonies and Flowers in a Blue Vase.

Hammerhead shark double whammy

ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2012) ? Identity confusion between a new, yet unnamed shark species, originally discovered off the eastern United States by Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center (NSU-OC) researchers, and its look-alike cousin -- the endangered scalloped hammerhead shark -- may threaten the survival of both species.

According to an April 2012 article in the scientific journal Marine Biology, the new look-alike hammerhead species has now been discovered more than 4,300 miles away near the coast of southern Brazil. This confirms that the original finding was not a local oddity and the new species is much wider spread. The look-alike species may face the same fishery pressures as the real scalloped hammerhead, which is being fished unsustainably for its highly prized fins.

"It's a classic case of long-standing species misidentification that not only casts further uncertainty on the status of the real scalloped hammerhead but also raises concerns about the population status of this new species," says professor Mahmood Shivji, Ph.D., who oversaw the new research at the NSU-OC's Save Our Seas Shark Center USA and Guy Harvey Research Institute.

Tens of millions of sharks are being killed for their fins and meat worldwide, resulting in dramatic reductions in shark populations and concerns about the broad scale negative impacts to ocean ecosystems. This has prompted international protection and other management efforts to reduce the unsustainable slaughter of sharks.

"It's very important to officially recognize, name and learn more about this new hammerhead species and the condition of its populations through systematic surveys," Shivji says. "Without management intervention to curtail its inadvertent killing, we run the risk that overfishing could eradicate an entire shark species before its existence is even properly acknowledged."

Shivji's team first discovered the new hammerhead species in 2005 when examining the DNA of sharks thought to be scalloped hammerheads based on their physical appearance. A research team from the University of South Carolina independently confirmed the existence of the new species in 2006.

Combining genetic assessments of NSU and South Carolina researchers shows that at least 7 percent of the sharks in U.S. waters originally thought to be scalloped hammerheads turned out to be the new species. This means that the population of the endangered real scalloped hammerhead in U.S. waters is probably smaller than originally thought.

The status of the scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) is currently under review by the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service to determine if it warrants listing as threatened or endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. It's already on the red list of endangered species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). The new species is on neither list.

"We hope that during this important scalloped hammerhead status review, the new look-alike species will be recognized, and possible impacts of historical mix-ups between the two species on past scalloped hammerhead stock assessments will be considered," says Shivji.

According to Danillo Pinhal, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the UNESP-S?o Paulo State University in Brazil who performed the lab work as a visiting graduate student in Shivji's laboratory in 2009, "the finding of this species all the way down in Brazilian waters, where hammerhead sharks are heavily fished, raises concerns about the population status of both species not just in U.S. waters but throughout the western Atlantic. It's an international issue now and it's essential that further research on this new species be conducted in Brazilian waters."

Other than differences in their DNA, the two shark species also differ in their number of vertebrae. The new look-alike species has approximately 20 fewer vertebrae than the scalloped hammerhead, in the range of 170 vs. 190. An analysis of the DNA suggests that the new species and the scalloped hammerhead separated from each other approximately 4.5 million years ago, a surprisingly long time given how similar they look externally.

There are three well-documented species of large hammerhead sharks (scalloped, great and smooth hammerheads), and their fins have high value in the international shark fin trade. The finding of this new hammerhead now brings the total to four large species with this unique hammerhead shape.

Hammerheads and other large sharks have been overfished for years. Scientists are concerned that further reductions in their numbers and biodiversity may irreversibly alter the ocean's intricate food web and upset ecosystem balance. For example, a high-profile study has shown that the large reduction of sharks off the U.S. East Coast is associated with a huge increase in the population of one of their prey -- the cownose ray -- which in turn has then been responsible for overeating the bay scallop, dramatically reducing the supply of scallops for the fishing industry.

However due to certain foods the Les relaxes after food passes through making it more likely that food and stomach acid will rise back up into the esophagus causing heartburn symptoms. Foods that relax the LES include fried or greasy foods, high fat meats, butter, margarine, mayonnaise, creamy sauces, salad dressing, whole milk dairy products, chocolate, peppermint, or caffeinated beverages such as soda, coffee, tea, or cocoa.

When we eat our stomach produces acid to breakdown food into essential nutrient and deliver them throughout the body. The stomach regulates how much acid is produced however some foods stimulate an overproduction of acid. When this occurs excess acid can rise up into the esophagus, causing feeling of heartburn. FRIDAY, March 23 (HealthDay News) ? Overweight and obese breast cancer patients are at increased risk for recurrence of the disease, a new study finds.

The findings ? which held true even though chemotherapy doses were adjusted for weight ? provide further evidence that lifestyle factors can influence cancer patient outcomes, according to Dr. Jennifer Ligibel, a medical oncologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School.

She and her colleagues analyzed data collected from 1,909 breast cancer patients. Of those women, about 1 percent were underweight, 33 percent were normal weight, 33 percent were overweight and 33 percent were obese.

The researchers examined the link between body-mass index (a measure of body fat based on weight and height) and relapse-free survival and overall survival. The findings are slated for presentation Friday at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Vienna.

?Several other studies have shown that being overweight or obese at the time that a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer is linked to a higher risk of recurrence. However, questions have been raised in the past whether obese women were receiving relatively lower doses of chemotherapy due to their weight. Our study mandated that each patient received a chemotherapy dose adjusted to her weight, so these results suggest that treatment factors are not responsible for the differences in recurrence rates seen in heavier women,? Ligibel said in a conference news release.

?We found that BMI was related to both relapse-free survival and overall survival; for example, the 10-year relapse-free survival of a patient who was overweight was 70 percent; compared with 65 percent for one who was obese,? she noted.

Ligibel concluded: ?Obesity is a modifiable factor, and although there is not yet enough evidence to say with certainty that losing weight or exercising more regularly will decrease the risk of breast cancer recurrence, there are consistent links between lifestyle factors such as diet, weight and physical activity patterns and breast cancer prognosis. If future studies show that making changes in lifestyle behaviors for women with early breast cancer will improve survival rates, then lifestyle interventions may one day become a standard part of breast cancer care.?

According to conference chair David Cameron, a professor at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, these are important findings for women with breast cancer but ?we need to recognize that the reason overweight women have poorer outcomes is not clear,? he said in the news release.

?There are a lot of health reasons why overweight women should try and get back to a normal weight, but this is not always easy, and as the authors acknowledge, we don?t yet know that losing weight after a breast cancer diagnosis will make a difference,? he noted.

Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Astronomers have put forward a new theory about why black holes become so hugely massive ? claiming some of them have no 'table manners', and tip their 'food' directly into their mouths, eating more than one course simultaneously.

Researchers from the UK and Australia investigated how some black holes grow so fast that they are billions of times heavier than the sun.

The team from the University of Leicester (UK) and Monash University in Australia sought to establish how black holes got so big so fast. Their research is due to published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The research was funded by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council.

Professor Andrew King from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Leicester, said: "Almost every galaxy has an enormously massive black hole in its centre. Our own galaxy, the Milky Way, has one about four million times heavier than the sun. But some galaxies have black holes a thousand times heavier still. We know they grew very quickly after the Big Bang.''

"These hugely massive black holes were already full--grown when the universe was very young, less than a tenth of its present age."

Black holes grow by sucking in gas. This forms a disc around the hole and spirals in, but usually so slowly that the holes could not have grown to these huge masses in the entire age of the universe. `We needed a faster mechanism,' says Chris Nixon, also at Leicester, "so we wondered what would happen if gas came in from different directions."

Nixon, King and their colleague Daniel Price in Australia made a computer simulation of two gas discs orbiting a black hole at different angles. After a short time the discs spread and collide, and large amounts of gas fall into the hole. According to their calculations black holes can grow 1,000 times faster when this happens.

"If two guys ride motorbikes on a Wall of Death and they collide, they lose the centrifugal force holding them to the walls and fall," says King. The same thing happens to the gas in these discs, and it falls in towards the hole.

This may explain how these black holes got so big so fast. "We don't know exactly how gas flows inside galaxies in the early universe," said King, "but I think it is very promising that if the flows are chaotic it is very easy for the black hole to feed."

The two biggest black holes ever discovered are each about ten billion times bigger than the Sun.

It is a clever trick if you can pull it off - mimic another, more dangerous animal and so avoid being eaten.

Many insects try it, but it has been a long standing puzzle why some of the worst mimics in Nature can still seem to escape becoming a meal.

Now, Canadian scientists tell Nature journal they can answer that one.

Larger animals, they say, make for more substantial meals, and so their mimicry needs to be spot on. For small prey, a great performance is not so essential.

"Mimicry of harmless species pretending to be dangerous ones in order to avoid being eaten is one of the best celebrated examples of the outcome of evolution by natural selection," says Professor Tom Sherratt, of Carleton University in Ottawa, who led the research.

"Good examples of mimicry are highlighted in biology text books, but many mimics are poor and their emergence remains something of a puzzle."

Mimicry is common among plants and animals.

Species of snakes, spiders and butterflies have all evolved to look like other species to ward off predators. But one of the great mysteries in biology is that most of this copy-cat behaviour is not very good, and bad impersonators seem just as abundant as the good ones.

A simplistic interpretation of Darwin's theory of natural selection would suggest that it would be better for all mimics to closely resemble the species they are trying to impersonate.

One explanation for why some might not achieve this is the eye of the beholder theory.

Another theory is that poor mimics are an amalgamation of unappetising species and so, although they don't resemble any one of them to a predator, they do represent the worst possible combination.

To probe the conundrum further, researchers at Carlton University studied 81 different species of hoverfly, which to varying degrees mimic bees and wasps.

Hoverflies are harmless flies and yet many have evolved a resemblance to wasps and bees to avoid being eaten by birds.

Some species of hoverfly look very close to the bees and wasps they are supposed to resemble, and other species only bear a passing resemblance.

The team began by first quantifying how close each species was to the bee or wasp it was trying to impersonate.

They did this by showing photographs to people and asking them to give each species a score out of 10.

The team then combined these results with an objective score obtained by comparing measurements of the body parts of each species and their bee or wasp counterpart to obtain an overall score for similarity.

The scientists found that the larger the hoverfly species, the closer it resembled the emulated wasp or bee. They also found that the smaller species were not very good mimics at all.

"If you are a small hoverfly then birds are not going to be very interested in you," Prof Sherratt explained.

"You are a relatively unprofitable meal and so the selection on mimicry is relatively weak.

"All you need to do is vaguely look like a wasp, and a bird will be sufficiently deterred to leave you alone because it's just not worth taking the risk if it turned you were a wasp because the benefit is that much smaller.

"But if you are a nice fat juicy hoverfly, you are a substantial meal to a bird, and in those cases you might experience even stronger selection to resemble something like a wasp or bee and therefore gain protection from predators."

French police in standoff with suspected shooter

TOULOUSE, France (AP) ? In a tense, daylong standoff, French riot police surrounded a building Wednesday in southwest France, demanding the surrender of a gunman whom they say boasted of shooting seven victims in an al-Qaida-linked terror spree.

Hundreds of police cordoned off the streets around an apartment complex in the city of Toulouse after a pre-dawn raid to arrest the suspect, a 24-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent, erupted into a firefight. Three police were wounded and negotiations with the suspect dragged on for hours.

Prosecutor Francois Molins said the gunman, Mohamed Merah, was a self-taught radical Salafi who expressed glee at killing three Jewish children, a rabbi and three French paratroopers. Merah had been to Afghanistan twice and had trained in the Pakistani militant stronghold of Waziristan, he said.

The prosecutor said Merah was planning to kill another soldier imminently, so police had to launch the 3 a.m. raid.

In the negotiations, the suspect "expresses no regret, only that he didn't have time to have more victims. And he even bragged, he said, of bringing France to its knees," the prosecutor said.

The gunman's brother and mother were being detained. Molins said the brother, Abdelkader, had been implicated in a 2007 network that sent militant fighters to Iraq.

French authorities ? like others in Europe ? have long been concerned about "lone-wolf" attacks by young, Internet-savvy militants who self-radicalize online. Molins' comments, however, marked the first time a radical Islamic motive has been ascribed to killings in France in years.

The police raid was part of France's biggest manhunt since a wave of terrorist attacks in the 1990s by Algerian extremists. The chase began after France's worst-ever school shooting Monday and two previous attacks on paratroopers beginning March 11, killings that have horrified the country and frozen campaigning for the French presidential election next month.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has played up nationalist themes in his bid for a second term.

"Terrorism will not be able to fracture our national community," Sarkozy declared Wednesday on national television before heading to funeral services for the two paratroopers killed and another injured Thursday in Montauban, near Toulouse.

The suspect repeatedly promised to turn himself in Wednesday, then halted negotiations. Cedric Delage, regional secretary for a police union, said police were preparing to storm the building.

Sarkozy's office said President Barack Obama called him Wednesday to express condolences to the families of the victims and praise French police for tracking down the suspect. The statement said France and the United States are "more determined than ever to fight terrorist barbarity together."

In recent years, French counterterrorism officials have focused mainly on al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, the North African affiliate of Osama Bin Laden's network that has its roots in an insurgent group in Algeria, a former French colony.

The suspect has told police he belonged to al-Qaida and wanted to take revenge for Palestinian children killed in the Middle East, Interior Minister Claude Gueant said, adding the gunman was also angry about French military intervention abroad.

"He wants to avenge the deaths of Palestinians," Gueant told reporters as talks went on. "He's (also) after the army."

Molins said Merah's first trip to Afghanistan ended with him being picked up by Afghan police "who turned him over to the American army who put him on the first plane to France."

"He had foreseen other killings, notably he foresaw another attack this morning, targeting a soldier," Molins said, adding also planned to attack two police officers. "He claims to have always acted alone."

Merah has a long record as a juvenile delinquent with 15 convictions, Molins added.

An Interior Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Merah had been under surveillance for years for having "fundamentalist" Islamic views.

During the standoff, police evacuated the five-story building, escorting residents out using the roof and fire truck ladders. The suspect's apartment was on the ground floor of the postwar building, locals said.

French authorities said Merah threw a Colt .45 handgun used in each of the three attacks out a window in exchange for a device to talk to authorities, but had more weapons like an AK-47 assault rifle. Gueant said other weapons had been found in his car.

"The main concern is to arrest him, and to arrest him in conditions by which we can present him to judicial officials," Gueant added, explaining authorities want to "take him alive ... It is imperative for us."

Delage said a key to tracking the suspect was the powerful Yamaha motorcycle that he has used in all three attacks ? a dark gray one that had been stolen March 6. The frame was painted white, the color witnesses saw in the school attack.

According to Delage, one of the suspect's brothers went to a motorcycle sales outfit to ask how to modify the GPS tracker, raising suspicions. The vendor then contacted police, Delage said.

The shooter has proved to be a meticulous operator. At the site of the second paratrooper killing, police found the clip for the gun used in all three attacks ? but no fingerprints or DNA on it.

Those slain at the Jewish school, all of French-Israeli nationality, were buried in Israel on Wednesday as relatives sobbed inconsolably. The bodies of Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, his sons Arieh, 5, and Gabriel, 3, and 8-year-old Myriam Monsenego had been flown there earlier in the day.

At the funeral ceremony in Jerusalem, Myriam's eldest brother, Avishai, in his 20s, wailed and called to God to give his parents the strength "to endure the worst trial that can be endured."

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, meanwhile, denounced the deadly shooting attack at the Jewish school and condemned the link to Palestinian children.

"It's time for criminals to stop using the Palestinian cause to justify their terrorist actions," Fayyad said in a statement. "The children of Palestine want nothing but dignified lives for themselves and for all the children."

'Dark Knight Rises' Is Real ... And Bound For Comic-Con?

Batman fans received what will probably be the most important news of the pre-release for "The Dark Knight Rises": The film actually exists.

As we reported, Christopher Nolan screened a rough cut of his final Batman movie for Warner Bros. brass last week, and the legion of fans breathed a collective sigh of relief. We now know that a completed version of the film is real, and it's not just a trailer we've watched obsessively since ... December?

Yup, it's been three months since we've seen any new footage from the most anticipated movie of 2012, and we've felt every Batman-less minute of it. You go three months with nothing more than a squeak from the new Nolan Batman movie, and you start to think some paranoid thoughts. Is the movie ever coming out? Is the movie even real? But worry not, borderline psychotic Gothamite: "The Dark Knight Rises" is real and edging toward the picture-locked goal line. There's no official word on the reaction to the rough-cut screening, as of yet.

Thankfully, the news of the rough cut closely preceded the leak of a new plot synopsis, taken from the plaque of a film cell that will eventually go on sale over at Film Cells Ltd. The cell shows Batman, Bane and Commissioner Gordon with the caption: "When Commissioner Gordon stumbles upon a plot to destroy the city from within, Bruce Wayne gets back into action as the Batman. Waiting for him is the mysterious Selina Kyle and Bane, a lethal adversary on a crusade to tear apart Batman's legacy piece by piece."

Granted, the "synopsis" amounts to "Hey, Batman, Bane and Commissioner Gordon are all going to be in the same movie. Can't really talk about it," but we can't really complain about new information at this point.

In the realm of Batman rumors that could possibly affect you — wait, let me clarify. This rumor might affect you if you were lucky enough to snag passes to San Diego Comic-Con before they sold out in 6.5 seconds. There's a chance Nolan could appear at San Diego Comic-Con this year. It would be the first time ever for the director, since his previous two Batman movies debuted before the convention. This time around, Batman will rise the week after SDCC, so speculation has already begun that Nolan could make his final bow at the geekiest of all gatherings.

If you start to consider that, the nerdy possibilities are endless. What will the panel include? Who from the cast will show up? Are we talking about an actual screening here? Can I go? Why can't I go? Please let me go!

Listen, I'm all for going into a highly anticipated movie not knowing much, and I'm glad that my spoiler levels for "Rises" have been kept to a generous low. But there should be a little more out there to tease us. In the race of the summer tentpoles, "The Dark Knight Rises" is resting on its laurels while "Prometheus" and "The Avengers" are dropping kick-ass trailers like they were nothing. It's getting to the point where Warner Bros. might need to start considering that slapping "Christopher Nolan" and "Batman" on a theater marquee might not be enough to win the summer.

And when you do finally cut a second theatrical trailer, Warner Bros., please spare us the 10-second trailer of the trailer. Those are just terrible.
