Home prices rise for fourth month in May: S&P

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Single-family home prices rose for the fourth month in a row in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, suggesting the recovery in the housing market continued to gain traction, a closely watched survey showed on Tuesday.

The S&P/Case-Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.9 percent in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping economists' expectations for a 0.5 percent gain.

On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, prices fared even better, jumping 2.2 percent.

"With May's data, we saw a continuing trend of rising home prices for the spring," David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at Standard & Poor's, said in a statement.

Still, Blitzer cautioned that spring and summer are traditionally strong buying months and that gains need to continue into the rest of the year.

"The housing market seems to be stabilizing, but we are definitely in a wait-and-see mode for the next few months."

The rate of decline on a yearly basis moderated, with prices down 0.7 percent compared to a 1.9 percent drop in April.

Dan Walters: California job report needs to be put into larger context

When June's employment data were released last week, some analysts quickly hailed them as indicators of a strong California recovery from the deepest recession since the Great Depression.

Steve Levy, who directs the Center for the Continuing Study of the California Economy, was particularly upbeat, to wit:

"California has now posted two blockbuster months for job growth, and the economy has regained some mojo for moving forward. The state added 38,300 jobs in June and 45,900 jobs in May for a two-month total of 84,200 jobs or an astounding 50 percent of the national job increase in these two months."

Call The Bee's Dan Walters, (916) 321-1195. Back columns, www.sacbee.com/ walters. Follow him on Twitter @WaltersBee.

One assumes that Levy won't be branded a "declinist," Gov. Jerry Brown's sobriquet for those with a less-than-rosy outlook.

At the risk of earning such a gubernatorial epithet once again, let's put the new jobs report and other recent economic data in a larger, perhaps more realistic, context.

Non-agricultural wage and salary employment in California last month was 14.3 million, and total employment ? including the self-employed ? was 16.5 million. With 18.5 million in a "labor force" of potential workers, that means just under 2 million were jobless for an unemployment rate of 10.7 percent.

A year earlier, unemployment was just over 200,000 higher and the unemployment rate was 11.9 percent, so June was a definite improvement. But it was still the third-highest rate in the nation, nearly a third higher than the national rate.

More disturbingly, there were fewer Californians receiving paychecks in June than there were 10 years earlier, in 2002, even though the state's population had increased by 3 million, according to a Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. compilation.

California may be recovering, but without some big surge, returning to where we used to be will take many years. The LAEDC's forecast is for California to recover "slowly but steadily" but with double-digit unemployment at least into 2013.

The other emerging facet of the slow recovery is that it's very uneven in economic, sociological and geographic terms.

The most vigorous job growth is found, as Levy also notes, in the coastal centers of technology, while inland regions and their agriculture-, manufacturing- and transportation-centered economies continue to lag.

The technology-heavy San Francisco Bay Area, for instance, has jobless rates at or below those at the national level, with Marin County, at 6.6 percent, the state's lowest. But high double-digit rates are still evident in inland areas, topped by a stunning 28.2 percent in mostly Latino Imperial County.

So far, therefore, our slow recovery is reinforcing our evolution into a two-tier economy, and therefore a two-tier society.

That's reality, not declinism.

Starting a Home Based Business- Marketing Strategies | home ...

Many individuals are at a fork in the road with their business careers. Some are facing the fact that what they have been doing until now has not been working and they feel like they?re running out of Time, Money and Patience. They are looking for a better solution. The world around them is changing and many opportunities that were once stable now seem to be filled with uncertainty. Many middle-aged and older workers are facing the bleak reality that they may have to continue working past retirement age.

Economic turmoil, a devastated housing market, and retirement incomes that now rest on slippery slopes have left many individuals wondering if starting a Home Business might just be the best option for them.

There are many things to consider when contemplating this new career path; however, I will just mention a couple of primary considerations. What are some of the benefits and how will you market your products/services. First of all, there are many advantages to starting a home business including:

- Low start-up costs compared to a franchise.
- Unlimited income potential.
- True independence by working at home.
- Usually no inventory required.
- No age requirements.

There are thousands of home based businesses to choose from with many different types of products to sell, and individuals should spend the time required in selecting the right home business. Secondly, and equally important, individuals should devote just as much diligence studying and researching how they will market that business.

Unfortunately, many people jump into a new venture without spending much thought or time as to how they will actually market their business. The truth is that most individuals starting a Home Business will struggle because they will continue using outdated and ineffective tactics that were being used years ago. They will spend the majority of their efforts trying to convince friends, family and other prospects to try their opportunity. Unfortunately, there are only a limited amount of people in their warm market and most of them are not interested in starting a home business. More importantly, they are not qualified prospects.

In order to be successful like the Top Professionals in the Network Marketing and Direct Sales industry, they will typically need to generate 20-30 leads every single day. So, how can the average individual expect to generate the leads they need to build there home business with speed and efficiency?

The answer is the Internet. Internet marketing is definitely one of the best means available today to promote a home based business. Most people are very aware that the internet is used for marketing since they use the internet themselves to conduct personal searches every day. However, the fact is that very few home business owners are using the technology that could really give them a huge advantage to build their home based business faster.

In order to have a much better chance to succeed, they can start out using Automated Marketing Systems combined with Internet marketing to generate more distributors. This will get them on the cutting edge of where the home based business industry is going.

The good news is there is help for the new business owner who may not even know where to start. Online marketing systems are already available and being used by many home business owners to create wealth online. Home business owners should consider using a simple system that is designed for anyone, regardless of training experience or skill level. An efficient online marketing system should?

- Provide landing pages and structured sales funnels.
- Eliminate most personal selling, convincing and explaining.
- Generate leads on auto-pilot.
- Provide on-going training and support.
- Enable the same Tools and Strategies be available to their downline.

Bottom line, in today?s very competitive marketplace, home based business owners need to use the Power and Leverage of the Internet along with their very own Online Marketing System to level the playing field. They will then discover that using the same tools and strategies of the Top Pros in the industry will give them the best chance to succeed out the gate.

To find out more about one such powerful online marketing system that solves many of the problems that home business owners struggle with visit:

There is a faint hypnotic tune ringing hauntingly in the distance. It is pulling you into a blissful trance-like state; slowly it blends with your senses and takes you into this inexplicable high, up to the seventh heaven. Can?t figure out where it is coming from? Look closely; there is no sign of an instrument nearby. For all you know, this idyllic piece of music may be coming from a smartphone.

With approximately 4 billion cell phones around the World (inclusive of 25 million iPhones), there is a lot of potential in mobile creativity, that is, using mobile phones for a host of unimaginable purposes. Perhaps, it all started when Ge Wang, a Professor of music at Stanford CCRMA, with an aim of bringing about a ?mobile renaissance?, founded the Stanford Mobile Phone Orchestra, popularly named MoPhO. Says Wang,

?It levels the playing ground in some ways because everyone has a cell phone. Further, they are communication devices. So inherently, they connect people.?

Transform the multi-touch screens, built-in accelerometers, built-in microphones, GPS, data networks and computation into powerful and yet mobile chamber meta-instruments ? transforming the phone device into a grand instrument is not as complicated as it just sounded. Devise a quick code and the cell phone turns into ?one of the most intimate and personal devices man has ever known, but also one of the most ubiquitous.? In 2008, Wang co founded a company called Sonic Mule (SMULE), exploring interactive sonic media. With this began an array of music making mobile applications. Not your regular touch and play apps, but more comprehensive, interactive, sound centred applications that pave a promising way for music making applications.

http://bit.ly/NPaGem

The trendsetter in this category is Ocarina, an app that converts the iPhone into a 12,000 year old clay wind instrument called ocarina. The app enables users to blow into their smartphone devices? microphone to play flute like music. Available for 99 cents on App Store, Ocarina creates sounds in real time, based on gestures, tilt, wind input and finger placement on the four holes displayed on the touchscreen. Another part of the app shows the globe of the world with glowing points of light on different parts of the globe, each of which showed someone somewhere who had just used the app. You tap on a glowing point and a tune played by someone in that part of the world will be heard by you, wherever you are.

?This is connecting people musically that was not possible with formal performance,? says the founder. Perhaps this is the first instrument that connects and lets others having the same instruments hear what they are playing. ?One of the most magical programs?, as put by the NY Times writer David Pogue, Ocarina is among those very few music making apps revolutionising the mobile applications category.

I have listed below some other apps in the mobile music making category that have gained widespread admiration, owing to their unique features:

http://bit.ly/OvJiRF

iBone: It is a phone trombone which lets the user touch or blow into the mic to play a sound. Pitch can be changed by sliding the finger on the touchscreen and volume can also be adjusted. This app is available on Android as well.

Gliss: Gliss goes beyond the method of music making, uniting different human senses and skills. It lets you create music by drawing on your smartphone. The app sort of lets you draw what you?d like to hear. There are 5 colours in the palette, each representing a different type of sound. A cursor on the screen interprets your drawings. Tilting the phone left and right enables you to play the music backward or forward, fast or slow. The tilting also leads to the drawings falling to the either side, thus changing the sound?s pitch.

http://bit.ly/O9rBd7

Drum Meister: If you are someone who likes loud music and huge instruments, then this iPhone music making app is for you. It allows you to play drums on your phone using fingertips. It includes 10 drums, all on the same screen. Perhaps the coolest thing about this ap is that it lets you rearrange the position of the drums which influences the sound produced, through the 3D surround effect. It is available for $1.99.

So many apps focusing on enabling users to make their own music through their smartphones makes me wonder if everyone owning a smartphone will soon turn into a musician. It is truly a mobile revolution. As Ge Wang says, ?A mobile marching band isn?t far off.?

How Do You Spend $375 Million A Day? Ask The Oil Industry

The average U.S. household has seen both their net worth and their average income steadily decline over the last seven years. Unemployment in the United States still remains at uncomfortably high levels, and the poverty rate is about to reach highs that haven?t been seen since the 1960?s. But as average citizens are struggling to provide food for their families and gainful employment, there are a special few in the U.S.A. who have more cash than they know what to do with. Those special few would be the oil industry.

While most of us in the U.S. were cringing every time that ticker on the gas pump climbed higher and higher, executives at the top five oil companies were squealing with delight as their profits climbed even faster and higher than the prices at the pump.

This week, oil companies are sheepishly coming forward with their 2nd quarter earnings statements, likely praying that Americans forget about the fact that gas prices were recently at near-historic highs in areas of the country. From Climate Progress:
??

The top two corporations on the Fortune 500 Global ranking, Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil, announced their 2012 second-quarter earnings today, bringing the total profits for three Big Oil companies to $44 billion for 2012 or $250,000 every day this year. Exxon profited by $16 billion this quarter, bringing its earnings for 2012 to $25 billion.

The New York Times wrote that Exxon and Shell?s earnings ?disappoint,? because energy prices unexpectedly dropped for consumers this summer. Put their profits in the appropriate context, however, and Exxon and Shell still made a combined $160,000 per minute last quarter, even though the top five oil companies benefit from $2.4 billion federal tax breaks every year.
?

That certainly warrants repeating: Exxon and Shell made a combined $160,000 every minute for the last quarter, and still helped themselves to a piece of the $2.4 billion in federal tax breaks and subsidies that flow to the top five oil companies (the grand total for all members of the industry is estimated to be between $4 and $7 billion a year.)

At their current rate of pay by the minute, they are on track to beat their record from last year when the top five oil companies combined earned a total of $261,000 every minute, for a grand total of $375 million a day.

So the ultimate question is how do they spend all that money? The simplest answer is that they spend most of it in ways that only makes them wealthier. Again from Climate Progress:
??

ExxonMobil:

Exxon spent 42 percent ? or $10.7 billion ? of its 2012 profits buying back its stock, which enriches executives and largest shareholders.

Exxon has spent $17 million lobbying for the past 18 months, making it the top spender in the oil and gas industry. It has spent more than $52 million lobbying for the first three years of the Obama presidency, 50 percent more than in the Bush administration.

Exxon is sitting on $18 billion in cash reserves.

Exxon sent federal candidates $1.3 million in campaign contributions so far this campaign cycle, sending 91 percent to Republicans.

Exxon paid just 13 percent in federal taxes last year, lower than the average American family. Right after Mitt Romney, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is the top recipient of Exxon federal contributions.

Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson received $24.7 million total compensation.

Royal Dutch Shell:

Shell has spent nearly $22 million on lobbying for the past 18 months, making it the second-biggest spender of the oil and gas industry.

Shell bought back 15 percent of its second-quarter profits, or $900 million.

In its annual report, Shell noted that the number of oil spills increased from 195 in 2010 to 207 during 2011.
?

But Exxon and Shell aren?t the only companies to report massive paydays this week; ConocoPhillips is also apparently rolling in the dough. Here?s how they spent their $2.3 billion in 2nd quarter profits:
??

ConocoPhillips has already spent $1 million lobbying Congress this year. In 2011, ConocoPhillips spent over $20 million on lobbying Congress, making it the top spender of the oil and gas industry.

Conoco has contributed nearly $400,000 to federal campaigns this year, with 90 percent of the contributions going to Republicans.

Conoco is sitting on $1 billion in cash reserves.

The company spent 35 percent more than they earned this quarter ? or $3.1 billion ? buying back its own stock, which enriches the largest shareholders and executives.
?

Obviously, there?s nothing wrong with a company being profitable. The problem is that the oil industry is profitable at the expense of our national economy and our environment. Oil spills in recent years have cost billions of dollars ? money that is coming from U.S. taxpayers ? and the ridiculous prices at the pump are taking a huge toll on American families.

And again, at the same time these companies are reaping these profits, we?re giving them an extra $7 billion tip every year. And as long as they keep pulling in these massive profits, they?ll have enough money to pay off the right politicians to keep those billions in subsidies in place. Last year, the total amount spent on lobbying topped $30 million by the oil industry in order to preserve their subsidies, which netted them a whopping 42% return on their?investment.

How to Engage Stakeholders

Tiffany Barber

Thank you everyone who was able to make it to our Culture, Conversations and Cocktails event. Great Place to Work was delighted to see old friends, as well as make new connections with like-minded folks. The origami fortune tellers were a huge success and we were excited to see so many guests discussing the topics we value most; culture, trust and leadership.

Earlier this week we discussed the importance of Communication in the Workplace and yesterday we posted a blog that featured Small Business Success Stories. In challenging times, these businesses did not reduce staff or cut costs and sacrifice product quality. Rather, they decided to forge ahead with the collaboration of stakeholders. They communicated with their employees, invited their feedback and subsequently came away with valuable input. They were then able to make wise, and ultimately successful, business decisions that lead to further growth.

Any company can become a success story. By fostering a culture of trust where upper management communicates with others and openly invites feedback, collaboration and innovation will inevitably follow. Last night?s Culture, Conversations and Cocktails event was just one example of how networking and communication can lead to better workplaces and better business strategy overall.

Here are just a few ideas on how to increase communication and collaboration in your workplace:

  • Provide Multiple Vehicles for Employee Suggestions. Everyone has their own unique style. If you want to successfully extract the brilliant ideas that we just know are bouncing around your employees? heads, you will need to cater to them. Set up surveys, email addresses, one-on-one sessions, group brainstorming sessions- you name it, to make sure everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves in their own individual way.
  • Increase Communication between Different Departments. Often times the right hand is too busy to check in with the left hand, and simple improvements to processes can be overlooked. Why not propose the challenges of one department to another and see how they would handle the situation? Some interesting ideas just might come out of it.
  • Offer Incentives to Customers for their Feedback. Customers are writing reviews of your company right now; do you know what they are saying? Ask for feedback and even offer incentives if need be, but make sure you know what your clients are thinking. Searching for common themes is always a good idea, but also keep an eye out for the isolated suggestion that might be a turning point for a particular product or service.
  • Never Stop Networking. Last night?s event was a hit because so many different perspectives gathered together to work towards a common goal; better workplaces. Don?t limit yourself to your department, geographic location or even your industry. You never know what will inspire you next!

For more tips on how to effectively communicate in the workplace, check out Systems Thinking: A Method for Communication. Your workplace is a dynamic, complex system comprised of various systems of people, departments and technologies, and these are your best resources for growing your business. Any organization can increase collaboration by shifting from a fragmented point of view (i.e. ?you are responsible for this?) to a more inclusive point of view (i.e. ?we are responsible for this?).

Tiffany Barber is the Associate Manager of Marketing and Communications and an avid blogger for Great Place to Work?.

Landmark Dividend launches Commercial Real Estate Division and is pleased to offer custom-tailored solutions to its commercial real estate clients; enabling them to receive full value for their cellular tower or billboard asset and ensuring the sale or refinance of their property proceeds without complication.

El Segundo, CA (PRWEB) July 25, 2012

The increasing number of issues surrounding the sale of property with billboard or cellular tower leases has prompted Landmark Dividend to launch a Commercial Real Estate Division to serve the needs of commercial property owners and realtors who are experiencing difficulties with lenders and the valuation of their property.

Commercial realtor, Ian Martin Grusd encountered issues when his client was seeking to sell an investment property with multiple cell towers. ?The banks were unwilling to loan any money against the value of the towers, which was affecting my ability to get the price my client desired for the property. We couldn?t walk away from the value of the leases, so we were backed into a corner.? That?s when Grusd discovered Landmark Dividend, the national industry leader in cellular and billboard ground leases.

Grusd was able get an immediate top dollar offer for the cellular ground leases that was customized to meet his client?s unique needs. Said Grusd, ?Landmark?s professionals worked with us to get the agreement we needed at a price that my client was very pleased with. Their process was transparent; their paperwork was simple and didn?t require legal expertise to understand. Best of all, we closed very quickly.?

Our experience in this industry, access to capital, focus on innovation and superior service enables us to provide exceptional value for our clients,? states Jeffrey Knyal, CEO of Landmark Dividend.

Office for Mac 2011 and 2008 ready for OS X Mountain Lion, procrastinators groan

Office for Mac 2011 fade

So you updated to OS X Mountain Lion and, gosh darn it, you're not sure that Office for Mac 2011 (or Office 2008 for Mac) will be in perfect harmony. Time to put off finishing that accounts receivable spreadsheet until IT sorts it all out, right? Unfortunately for anyone looking to catch a break, Microsoft just certified that the two most recent Mac versions of Office will purr with Apple's latest big cat. About the only hiccup remaining is the inability to manually download and install future updates as long as Gatekeeper is on full lockdown. If you've been spending all day making paper planes, it's time to knuckle down and get back to work.

Dubai Police Chief Warns Of International Plot To ... - Business Insider

DUBAI (Reuters) - Dubai's chief of police has warned of an "international plot" to overthrow the governments of Gulf Arab countries, saying the region needs to be prepared to counter any threat from Islamist dissidents as well as Syria and Iran.

The comments by, one of the most outspoken security officials in the United Arab Emirates, follow the detention in the UAE since April of at least 20 dissidents, according to relatives of the detainees and activists.

"There's an international plot against Gulf states in particular and Arab countries in general...This is preplanned to take over our fortunes," Khalfan told reporters at a gathering late on Wednesday marking the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

"The bigger our sovereign wealth funds and the more money we put in the banks of Western countries, the bigger the plot to take over our countries...The brothers and their governments in Damascus and North Africa have to know that the Gulf is a red line, not only for Iran but also for the Brothers as well."

Most of the detainees since April are Islamists, targeted by an official clampdown amid concern they may be emboldened by the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in other Arab countries such as Egypt.

UAE Interior Ministry officials have not been available to comment on the arrests. Last week, UAE officials announced that authorities were investigating a foreign-linked group planning "crimes against the security of the state".

"I had no idea that there is this large number of Muslim Brotherhood in the Gulf states. We have to be alert and on guard because the wider these groups become, the higher probability there is for trouble," Khalfan said on Wednesday.

"We are aware that there are groups plotting to overthrow Gulf governments in the long term."

Cancer ? it's more than just numbers - Science Media Centre

Cancer continues to kill more New Zealanders than any other cause of death, even though death rates for the illness have fallen by more than 16 percent since 1999.

Each year the total number of cancer deaths increases ? driven by population growth and demographic changes to an older age structure ? and a small drop in the total number of deaths between 2008 and 2009 is not thought to be the start of a ?trend.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Health Board set up by the Government in 2009 have this week released statistical information in Cancer: New registrations and deaths 2009? and Cancer: Historical summary 1948 ? 2009.

The national clinical director of the MOH cancer programme, Dr Andy Simpson, says earlier diagnosis and better treatment largely explain a 16 percent drop in death rates in the decade since 1999, almost 29 percent of all deaths in New Zealand are still from cancer.

?These statistics show there was a small decrease in the total number of deaths between 2008 and 2009, but it is almost certainly due to natural fluctuations in the data and it is too early to identify the beginning of a trend,? says Dr Simpson.

Lung cancer remains the most common cause of cancer death (18.9 percent), followed by colorectal cancer, then breast and prostate cancers, and 72 percent of all cancer deaths were in people aged over 65.

Observational studies have highlighted the association between diet and the risk of colorectal cancer recurrence, but a study of ?patients at Dunedin and Invercargill hospitals showed that though they were prepared to change diet following diagnosis and treatment they complained of receiving insufficient information.

Outside the statistics just released, Canterbury researchers are looking at the potential for national colonscopy screening, initially 18,000 a year rising to 28,000 by 2031 as the level of surveillance increases: ?Significant expansion of services is required,? they say.

Maori continue to have higher cancer mortality rates and though the the Maori cancer mortality rate dropped over the decade by 8.9%, ?the non-Maori rate fell by 17.4%.

Separately, Auckland research has raised a question over whether Maori and Pacific Island men present with more advanced prostate cancer than European New Zealand men.

The statistics provide a background for debates on many aspects of cancer treatment in New Zealand, including the role being played by molecular tests and computerised prognostic tools. ?For instance, ?widespread introduction of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening here has enhanced the early detection of prostate cancer, but doctors are having problems with which men are low-risk and which require a definitive diagnostic biopsy.

?In consequence, the decisions surrounding prostate cancer treatment become extremely difficult,? doctors say.

Expanded use of? often-expensive tests such as genetic screening also has economic implications.

Video: Poll gives snapshot of presidential race

>>> back to presidential politics now. the new nbc news/" wall street journal " poll we mentioned debuts this evening on nightly news. right now, we are getting a new snapshot of which candidate voters are standing with on key issues from the economy to being commander in chief. with a preview, nbc news senior political editor, mark murray . good afternoon to you.

>> hey, craig .

>> let's start at the top here. let's start with looking out for the middle class . what did the poll find?

>> the poll shows that president obama has a 16-point advantage on who is better in looking out for the middle class . this is an area where the white house is completely crafted their economic message. they want to be able to win, see who's better for the middle class while mitt romney might have the advantage on the economy, the democrats and the obama campaign want to own the middle class .

>> let's talk about the -- talk about being a good commander in chief. this is an area where the president seems to continue to enjoy quite the sizable lead.

>> craig , it's the way to understand the context of mitt romney 's speech today before the vfw, as well as his overseas trip that he's going on for the next week. president obama has an advantage here. he's the incumbent president. he has been commander in chief. mitt romney 's trying to cross a threshold, meet a threshold where people are able to say this person could do a good enough job. the challenge for romney is that this -- he will be facing an incumbent president who has done this for the past 3 1/2 years. so that's the way to understand the tough speech that he gave today, as well as his weeklong trip overseas.

>> it does help put that speech in perspective and understand the motivation, i suppose. the economy, what voters in this country, we know that's number one issue in every poll we take. what are voters saying about this one?

>> it shows mitt romney has a seven-point advantage on this. our poll that we released today on this particular question had six or seven qualities, characteristics. this was the only one where romney had a clear lead on. but if he had to lead on one, this is the one you want. as i mentioned obama leads on who would do better with the middle class , romney does better on who has better ideas to improve the u.s. economy , something that their campaign will take pride in.

>> before i let you get out of here quickly, you are digging through numbers. what struck you most so far about our most recent poll?

>> well, craig , i don't want to give away too much. one thing that has been evident in the race for the past month, even longer has been its real negative tone, all of the different tv ads, back and forths that we've been talking about for a while. we'll have numbers that actually show if those attacks have taken a toll on either obama or mitt romney .

>> all right. mark murray for us in washington, d.c., thank you.

>> thanks.

What ObamaCare Means for Those Who Already Have Health ...

After much anticipation, the Supreme Court ruled to uphold the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?otherwise known as ObamaCare?by a 5-4 decision. While there is great confusion among the public about what the ACA will do to our nation?s health care delivery system, one easy way to understand the law is this: The ACA makes health insurance companies play fair.

No more denying you coverage because of pre-existing conditions; no more dropping your coverage when you get sick; no more billing you into bankruptcy; and no more annual or lifetime limits?just to mention a few of the many benefits.

As part of creating better overall value for consumers, the law requires insurance companies to use 80 percent of your premium to provide health care and quality improvements. Currently, an estimated 30 percent of every health care dollar goes toward non-health-related expenses, such as advertizing campaigns, bureaucracy, and paperwork. (In contrast, only about 3 percent of Medicare and Medicaid expenditures go to administering those two programs.) What?s more, insurance companies that don?t meet this requirement must provide their customers with a rebate or reduce their premiums.

The law also requires insurance companies to provide some preventive services?annual exams and cancer screenings such as mammograms and colonoscopies?with no co-pays.

Countless New Mexicans have already benefited from these new insurance company rules:

  • Many hundreds of children with pre-existing conditions have been able to get insurance coverage.
  • 26,000 young adults under age 26 have been able to stay on their parent?s policies.
  • 285,000 seniors on Medicare have received free preventive services.

Of course, some of the biggest changes will come for those New Mexicans who do not have private health insurance:

  • The ACA has already resulted in 1,059 New Mexicans?who were previously locked out of the insurance system because of a pre-existing condition?gaining coverage in the state?s high risk pool.
  • More than 150,000 low-income adults will be newly eligible for Medicaid?the government health plan that currently covers low-income children, pregnant women, and nursing home patients?starting in 2014 if the state elects to expand the program. The expansion will be paid for almost entirely by federal dollars.
  • More than 100,000 New Mexicans who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid will receive tax credits for helping cover the cost of a private insurance plan of their choosing.
  • All New Mexicans needing to purchase private health insurance will be able to compare plans and premiums on the state?s health insurance exchange?an online marketplace that?s required by the ACA.
  • Several experts have said that only a tiny percent of Americans who do not wish to purchase insurance will elect, instead, to pay a penalty (although the Supreme Court ruling declared that the penalty was constitutional if it was referred to as a ?tax?).?

New Mexico has received some $35 million for planning and creating the health insurance exchange, although implementation has been slow. New Mexicans participating in the exchange will get federal benefits to purchase insurance amounting to more than $4 billion over the first seven years (2014-2020). If state leaders elect to expand the state?s Medicaid program, New Mexico stands to receive between 4.5 and 6.2 billion in federal funding over the seven-year period. The ACA, including the Medicaid expansion, will create between 30,000 and 38,000 new jobs, stimulate the economy, and level the playing field for New Mexico?s businesses by making it affordable for small businesses to offer their employees coverage. The taxes generated by the new jobs and economic activity will more than cover New Mexico?s share of the cost of the expansion. The ACA expansion will also take the burden of uncompensated care (care provided?usually in emergency rooms?to people who don?t have insurance)?an estimated annual cost of $335 million?off of the hospitals, providers, and those who already have insurance.

Google?s costly first steps into hardware: Motorola Mobility posts record $US233 million ...

Tuesday, 24 July 2012 11:10
Andrew Sadauskas

Google?s first steps into the hardware business are proving costly, with recently acquired Motorola Mobility division posting a record quarterly loss of $US233 million.

According to Phone Arena, the result compares to a $US285 million loss for the whole of fiscal year 2011.

The loss includes $US192 million on mobile handsets and $US41 million for home devices, although Google is downplaying the size of the losses, attributing them in large part to ?accounting noise?.

The news comes after former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt revealed Google?s long-term ambitions in hardware, recently stating:? ?Larry [Page] and Sergey [Brin] have always wanted to do hardware in one form or another. This [Motorola Mobility takeover] was a way to get into it quickly.?

Google?s $US12.5 billion takeover of Motorola Mobility, first announced in August last year, was finally completed in May after several months of negotiations with regulators.

Start8: Download Freeware to Get Start Button (ORB), Start Menu Back and Load Desktop on Login in Windows 8

UPDATE: New version available which allows you to skip Metro Start Screen and boot directly into Windows 8 Desktop.

We all know that Microsoft has removed the good old Start button and Start Menu from?Windows 8.

Start Menu and Start button were 2 essential components of Windows OS but Microsoft has replaced them with new Start Screen. Start Screen is not a perfect and complete replacement for Start Menu. You can check out following article which discusses the issue in details:

Will Windows 8 be a Good OS for Desktop PCs?

We have shared a detailed guide recently which helps you in getting Start button and Start Menu back in Windows 8. You can find the guide at following link:

How to Enable Good Old Start Button (ORB) and Start Menu in Windows 8?

Today we are going to share a new free software released by Stardock which is a well known Windows customization software company.

"Start8" is a freeware for Windows 8 which brings back Start button (ORB) and Start Menu in Windows 8 and also allows you to skip Metro Start Screen and load Windows Desktop on login.

As soon as you install the software, it immediately adds the Start ORB to Taskbar and when you click on it, Start Screen is shown in a mini mode which shows all installed apps by default as shown in following screenshot:

Start8_Start_Menu_Windows_8.png

Basically the free tool adds Start ORB to Taskbar and launches the same Start Screen upon clicking on the ORB but the developers programmed it wisely and introduced a small mode of Start Screen to show Apps page by default which works similar to Start Menu.

Also when you right-click on the Start ORB, you get following options:

  • On login go to the desktop
  • Show Full screen Metro Start Menu
  • In small mode defaults to apps page
  • Allow WinKey to show fullscreen menu
  • Non fullscreen size
  • Pick a different Start Button image
  • Run
  • Shutdown

Start8_Settings.png

If you enable "On login go to the desktop" option, you'll be able to skip new Metro Start Screen on login and Windows 8 will boot directly into Desktop.

If you enable "Show Full screen Metro Start Menu" option, the Start ORB will launch default Start Screen in full screen mode instead of showing it in mini mode.

If you disable "In small mode defaults to apps page" option, the Start ORB will launch Start Screen in mini mode but will not show apps page. Instead it'll show normal Start Screen with live tiles.

"Allow WinKey to show fullscreen menu" option will allow you to access default Metro Start Screen by pressing WIN key.

You can customize size of Start Menu with the help of "Non fullscreen size" menu.

Using 3rd option "Pick a different Start Button image", you can change Start ORB image. The software comes with many built-in ORB images.

Having "Run" and "Shutdown" options in context menu is a bonus.

You can download it using following link:

Games chiefs hit back at cynics as excitement mounts

LONDON (Reuters) - Organisers of the Olympics hit back on Sunday at cynics after weeks of negative headlines, saying criticism over planning mistakes and costs were being outweighed by a surge in public excitement as the gala opening ceremony nears.

Britain's famously caustic media, which have highlighted security and transport problems before the July 27-August 12 Games, also seemed to adopt a more positive stance as thousands turned out to cheer the Olympic torch relay through London.

"I think possibly what we're going through as a nation, as a city is that necessary, pre-curtain-up moment of psychological self-depression before the excitement begins on Friday when the curtain goes up," London Mayor Boris Johnson told the BBC.

"The mood is perceptibly changing. People are starting to get really excited here in London about the arrival of the torch .... The last remaining clouds of dampness and Olympo-scepticism are going to be banished," he later told Sky News.

Thousands turned out in London on Saturday as the Olympic torch relay began the final leg of its journey around Britain, and on Sunday the flame was carried to the top of the London Eye ferris wheel opposite Big Ben and the houses of parliament.

In the coming days, the torch will be carried around London's religious, political and royal landmarks, culminating in the lighting of the Olympic cauldron in east London.

The run-up to the Games has been dogged by weeks of rain and difficulties in recruiting enough security staff, prompting the government to draft thousands of extra army personnel to make up for the shortfall.

Transport delays also loom over the Games, with border staff planning to strike on July 26 - expected to be one of the busiest days in the history of London's Heathrow airport - over job cuts and pay, and train drivers in central England set to walk out on August 6-8 in a dispute over pension contributions.

London's underground rail network, a 19th-century creation, may struggle to cope with tens of thousands of Olympic tourists.

"FIGHT BACK"

The government and the union representing border staff on Sunday appeared no closer to averting industrial action.

"People are working at breaking point. When passengers are queuing at Heathrow for four hours, they take their anger out on front-line border staff and nobody should have to work in those conditions," said union boss Mark Serwotka.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt gave little ground.

"Surely this is a time not for promoting an industrial grievance, but putting the country first," he said.

The spat has added to a slew of negative headlines about the Games and a raft of logistical headaches for Olympic organisers.

Writing in the Daily Mail newspaper, Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Olympic organising committee, said the words "fiasco, chaos and crisis" had become the new currency of journalists, who describe his committee as "dysfunctional".

"Sometimes you fight back because the reportage bears no resemblance to reality .... You have the insatiable desire to start every explanation to your inquisitor with: 'Lighten up. We are staging the greatest celebration of sport'," he said.

Britain's press, however, appeared to be joining the Games bandwagon on Sunday, dedicating pages to the torch relay in London and giving away special Olympic guides and supplements.

JITTERS

Still, jitters hang over the Games, with 2012 being the 40th anniversary of the 1972 Munich attack by Palestinian militants that killed 11 Israeli Olympic team members - a reminder of the security challenges ahead.

"This is an event that is naturally attractive, even if there aren't concrete alerts. Readiness and vigilance are required .... Things like the Munich massacre have happened in the past," Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak told reporters.

Olympic organisers on Saturday ruled out marking the anniversary of the killings at the London opening ceremony, despite campaigning by the victims' families.

For one Olympic team, security problems began before they had even left home, with the president of Libya's Olympic Committee Nabil Elalem taken from his car by gunmen in Tripoli last week, before being freed on Sunday.

A colleague said he may still make it to the Games.

Pope Benedict, speaking during his regular Sunday address, said he hoped the London Games - the first in the British capital since 1948 - would foster world peace.

"I pray that, in the spirit of the Olympic truce, the goodwill generated by this international sporting event may bear fruit, promoting peace and reconciliation throughout the world."

Achieve World-Class Customer Service with Customer Service ...

According to the 2012 Global Customer Service Barometer, businesses may be meeting, but not exceeding customers? expectations for customer service. What does this mean to you? You may be losing valuable customers! Now is an ideal time to gain a competitive edge by investing in customer service training for customer-facing personnel.

Three in ten consumers in most markets believe that companies usually ?miss customer expectations,? and fewer than one in ten consumers across all markets believe that companies generally ?exceed customer expectations? for customer service.

What is World-Class Customer Service?

World-class cus?tomer ser?vice is commonly defined as the abil?ity to meet or exceed a customer?s expectations. As technology expedites the growth of new service and support channels, customer expectations of service delivery are also changing. A company?s ability to provide world-class service across all service and support channels is now an essential element in long-term success. Customer service training for all front-line employees guarantees consistent service, no matter which channel a customer chooses to use.

Not Providing World-Class Service Leads to Lost Revenue

Poor service affects customer loyalty in two ways. First, after experiencing poor service, existing customers may decide to not upgrade or purchase additional products or services. Second, customers who have negative service experiences are likely to tell others, which can quickly shrink revenue opportunities. Customer service training equips employees with the skills necessary to deliver world-class service and guards against common service pitfalls such as poor phone etiquette and bad attitude.

3 Reasons to Invest in Customer Service Training

Customer service training improves center operations in many ways, but the three improvements that also lead to world-class customer service are:

  1. Increased Call Resolution Rates: Customer service training equips employees with skills necessary to solve customer issues in a logical and timely manner. Quick call resolution has been proven to be one of the primary drivers of customer satisfaction.
  2. Reduced Escalations: Employees with clear and consistent communication skills convey an attitude of willingness and professionalism, and are better able to diffuse an angry caller. Customer service training for front-line employees emphasizes the importance of expressing empathy and building rapport, both necessary skills for delivering world-class service.
  3. Improved Employee Morale: After training, employees feel a renewed sense of purpose and a stronger affiliation to corporate goals and objectives. Employees with high morale perform better and encourage other team members to do the same.?

Poor customer experiences result in an estimated $83 Billion loss by US enterprises each year because of defections and abandoned purchases. Source: Parature Customer Service Blog

Today?s customer demands consistent, personalized, world-class service. Are your employees providing the level of service your center requires to be successful? Gain the competitive advantage you need by investing in customer service training.

Gold IRA Investing | Millionaire Article Directory

?

The historical past shows that investments in gold work as a hedge during economic uncertainty. Nonetheless, there are numerous US residents who would like to have actual possession of precious metals but they don?t have the investment capital to obtain one. If you are one of these people, you should know that you could do the 401k rollover into a self-directed gold IRA. The reason that you?d want to do a 401k rollover is that the current 401k does not allow physical precious metals to be among its assets. The gold IRA is the easiest way to obtain actual precious metals in your possession.

A lot of investors understand the worth of silver and gold. But they make investments in these precious metals using Exchange Traded Funds which are underpinned by such assets. Exchange Traded Fund stock values are simply offshoot paper assets depending on the present value of the precious metals. Nevertheless, they do not provide actual ownership of silver and gold. If you purchase silver and gold coins, you possess real commodities that have inherent value.

For instance, if you had a 401k transfer into a gold IRA in 1970, and in such year you rolled over ten thousand dollars of your money into the gold Individual Retirement Account; after all of the battles, terrorist attacks, oil shocks, political turmoil, and dollar devaluation, the gold Individual Retirement Account these days would be worth approximately five hundred thirty thousand dollars.

The value of gold and other metals should continue to increase long through the coming years because the state regulations continue to devalue the US currency. Additionally, developing countries demand a growing number of precious metals for central bank diversification and system development. Getting gold as an investment is wise, silver investment is likewise wise. But it is much more important to physically possess precious metals, not only stocks and shares of companies that invest in precious metals. To safeguard your future and the security your loved ones, consider making a 401k rollover to gold IRA investments.

Acquiring an Individual Retirement Account is essential in order to have fun during your retirement years. If you?re residing in the United States, it will allow you to have tax advantage for the savings. Even though IRA may be associated with some other assets like paper assets, possessing a physical gold investment is still a very intelligent decision.

BKC Personal and Group Fitness Training: Mind, Body & Spirit

BKC Personal and Group Fitness Training: Mind, Body & Spirit

Mind, Body & Spirit

"If there is right in the Soul,
There will be beauty in the person.
If there is beauty in the person,
There will be harmony in the home.
If there is harmony in the home,
There will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation,
There will be peace in the world." ? Lao Tze

?Fundamentally, the word ?health? comes from the root word ?whole? (?Yoga Energy: Mind Body Spirit ? Sadhguru ?Huffpost Healthy Living?).? However, many of us from Western society only think in terms of our body when it comes to our health and fitness; being healthy means we are disease free and being fit means that we exercise our bodies to build strong muscles and healthy lungs.??? But if we do go back to the root of the word ?health? our medical health alone does not give us a sense of ?wholeness.?? The term ?whole? takes into account our entire being.? If we are to take the concept of ?health? meaning ?whole? how can we not talk about our sense of wellness from within?
There have been many philosophers and scientists who have supported dualistic theories when it comes to mind and body.? According to 17th century French philosopher Rene Descartes ?I think, therefore I am;? Descartes wrote a thesis on mind-body dualism that established that he had a mind without needing to assume he had a body ? ?I understand the mind to be indivisible by its very nature, I understand the body to be divisible by its very nature, therefore, the mind is completely different from the body.?? A lot of western medicine seems to support Descartes theory of the body being a separate entity to the mind; ailments are physically and scientifically diagnosed and then symptoms are chemically or surgically treated.? Emotion is not recognized as a cause or a cure.
I think it is the eastern influence on our culture and developed theories on emotional intelligence and health that have influenced our culture and brought us round to the concept of ?body-mind.? ?This more unified concept argues that the body, mind, emotions and spirit are dynamically interrelated; each time a change is introduced at one level ?it has a ripple effect throughout the entire system? (Wikipedia).? The belief of Body-mind theorists is that the body holds all experiences ? both physical stress and emotional injury ? so specific postural positions or muscle tension can bring back memories and emotions.? Body-mind therapy combines the strengths of ?talk? therapy with body work, such as touch, postural alignment or movement education and exercise to increase body awareness, also known as mind-body or somatic therapy.? This therapy helps people become deeply aware of their bodily sensations as well as their emotions, images and behaviour.? Patients become more conscious of how they breathe, move, speak and where they experience feelings in their bodies (Wikipedia).? Suddenly there is a blur in the lines dividing mind and body.
In Yoga, when the term ?health? is used, it isn?t in terms of either the body or the mind; it is only in terms of energy (Yoga Energy: Mind Body Spirit ? Sadhguru ?Huffpost Healthy Living?).? In yoga, if your energy body is in proper balance and in full flow, your physical body and mental body will be in perfect health.? Now the spirit governs our very health!
When we refer to our ?well-being? we are usually talking in terms of finding balance and nourishing all aspects of our life; our physical health through exercise and proper eating, our emotional health, finding success or a sense of importance through our occupation, a spiritual connection to our universe, being social and being connected to those around us, nurturing our intellect by gaining further knowledge of ourselves and our surroundings.? If this is true, there are many un-well beings among us.? As a fitness professional, I keep hearing about how time poor everyone is? people can?t spend time on their physical fitness because their work schedule is too hectic, some people sacrifice their physical fitness or their career due to overwhelming family commitments, there are people who train their body all the time but then over-stimulate it with supplements and pollute their bodies rather than nourish it through good nutrition? and then they are unwilling to enhance their education on the matter- or any other matter- because their time is so consumed with their obsessions and then the intellect becomes starved and once again the balance lost!? Many of us lose sight of our ?whole? health and well-being because we overindulge in one aspect of our life.
Fatigue is often a state recognised but never alleviated.? Many of us soldier on and endure the tired dragging of our feet and bodies.? Often there is admiration when we do this.? What we don?t stop to realise is that fatigue often comes when we overindulge in one aspect of our life and don?t nurture another.? If we are fatigued are we happy?? If we draw away from the centre of our well-being and focus on only select-criteria of what makes us whole, will we ever be satisfied with ourselves?? We compromise and neglect our energy constantly.
?? ??Health and wellness are defined as being diseased free and having a functioning body.? What if the rest of our life is dysfunctional???? Are we well when we are fit to run a marathon but have no one in our lives to connect to?? Are we happy when our careers soar but feel like we are susceptible to a coronary when we climb a flight of stairs?? Is contentment found when we have the family of our dreams but our hunger for knowledge or our desire for career have been denied?? And if the wellness from within is not at a state we deem healthy, will our bodies just stand up and function as if this doesn?t matter???
So where do we focus our attention?? If we neglect our bodies we do run the risk of experiencing bad health and possibly disease? our body is our temple and should not be neglected.? There is much evidence that shows that neglecting our mind and our emotions can lead to poor health.? This once again puts our body, our physical and scientifically proven entity of who we are and what we represent, at risk? so our thoughts and feelings aren?t necessarily invisible? ?I personally like the yogi philosophy of attending to our spiritual energy.? Yoga uses physical movement and mind connection to align our energy and bring it to a state of flow? and yet I can still see these three aspects of us ? our mind, body and spirit- blurring boundaries and weaving through one another so that they interlock and make us whole again.? ???
