S.C. needs to work harder to eliminate domestic violence | Editorials ...

South Carolina?s perennially high ranking in the rate of violence committed by men against women testifies to the difficulty of dealing with this pernicious problem.

South Carolina had the second-worst ranking in the nation for the rate of women killed by men. It was the second year in a row that the state has climbed in the rankings.

The new rating, from 2010, is up from seventh the previous year and ninth the year before that. Several years before that, the state was No. 1 and No. 2.

South Carolina for years has ranked among the 10 worst in the nation when it comes to violence against women. Despite conspicious efforts at many levels to address the problem, it stubbornly persists.

In 2010, 46 women in the state were killed by men, giving South Carolina a rate of 1.94 per 100,000. Nationally, 1,800 women were killed by men, at a rate of 1.22 per 100,000.

Nevada had the highest rate of women being killed by men, but some experts have speculated that legalized prostitution in Nevada might have skewed the results to some degree. Tennessee ranked third in the nation.

In addition to women killed by men, tens of thousands more are victims of domestic violence. This is a crime where women, by and large, are victimized by men they know.

In 2006, state lawmakers stiffened penalties for repeat offenders and required special training for judges who try domestic violence cases. More prosecutors were hired to handle domestic violence cases.

Locally, the 16th Circuit Solicitor?s Office established a special court to review domestic violence cases twice a month. In cases that don?t involve more violent crimes, first-time offenders sometimes are given the option of intervention and treatment instead of jail time.

That is a progressive approach to the problem. The state needs to focus on offenders, some of whom can be successfully rehabilitated, as well as the victims.

We know that children who are raised in homes where domestic violence occurs are more likely to commit domestic violence or be victimized by it themselves. Early intervention might help break the cycle in some families.

We, as a society, need to encourage women in violent relationships to leave and seek help. And we need to establish safe havens, such as Rock Hill?s Safe Passage, which provide a refuge for women who need physical, spiritual and financial support after exiting an abusive relationship.

Relatives and neighbors who witness domestic violence also need to take an active role and report it to the proper authorities. Domestic violence has been a secret crime for too long, and bringing it into the open can save lives.

South Carolina might also benefit from increased efforts by sociologists and other public health experts to pinpoint why the state continually ranks so high in violence against women. What exactly are the factors that make this state more conducive to domestic violence than other states?

By now we should be aware that there are no easy or obvious solutions. If there were, the state would have embraced them.

The state isn?t hampered by a lack of will to address this issue but by a lack of good information about what fuels such a high level of violence and how to prevent it. We need to try harder to find the answers.

Horseracing Basics In Less Than Five Minutes

Ever since ancient times, horses have always been recognized and adored as competitive animals. Literary works would reveal these creatures soaring with demigods, journeying with kings, fighting with knights in combat, and battling with gladiators. Today, they engage in a lucrative and competitive sport in the form of horseracing. In less than five minutes, you may go through this article and discover the basics of the sport.

Material for Beginners
You will first have to go to the track counter or search online to obtain a racing program. Relevant information regarding the animals, their owners, the jockeys who ride with them, the various odds, and other competition facts are contained in this piece of paper or booklet. These function as your foundation and guide on the judgments you will make later on.

Take a Seat
You will have to search for an ideal seat after you have already arrived at the racetrack. Most tracks ask you to pay extra cash for reserved seating or spots in the clubhouse. Box seats are already suitable for beginners. What matters is you get a decent view of the animals and the activity that is about to take place.

A Peek at the Paddocks
An enclosed area near stables to keep horses saddled prior to the race is known as a paddock. This is a fantastic spot to carefully assess a horse's condition. Owners often ask the animals to walk around so as betting parties will get a chance to evaluate their form. The best ones are those that look calm, tamed, and alert. When walking, they must drop their legs gracefully, lightly, and loosely. Also, their coats, mane, and tails should appear shiny and clean to signify that their owners have taken care of them well.

Wagering Games
You could already place a bet after checking out the animal and the racing program. The significant things you have to say at the betting window are the following - the track, the amount you are betting, the type of bet, and the number of the horse you have selected. To avoid being puzzled and misled along the way, it helps to do some research from training books or from the internet about common racing slang and bets. You can also print a vocabulary guide and carry it with you as a cheat sheet. Do not forget to get your receipt right after you pay.

Gambling Results
In order to discover whether you have won or not, outcomes are always displayed at the end of the horse race. To get your earnings in cash in case you're lucky, all you need to do is to show your receipt to the cashier. You could try again next time in case you lose.

1. ?Do you incorporate creativity-boosting activities into your daily routine? If so, what activities do you do?

You might wanna slap me for saying this, but I feel like everything I do centers around doing it creatively. I?ve built my business on writing and making videos and speaking and playing my pink ukulele?so every time I decide to work on something, I think about what I want to express and how. I wrote/filmed/edited a music video for?my communty site.

When I put my career change exercises into?workbook?form, I decided to make the whole freakin? thing (yes, all 50+ pages) rhyme.

When I offered? An Effective Escape: Leaving Your Day Job Without Living in Your Parents? Basement?for the first time, it was as a virtual workshop. I?m usually doing something around speaking, singing, or writing? but not in a do-a-creative-exercise-every-day way.

2. ?What are your inspirations for your work?

It depends on what I?m working on, but the things that are popping into my head? Dr. Seuss,?Cee Lo Green,?Garfunkel & Oates, Cee Lo Green, stuff from my childhood (I so wanna write a Choose Your Own Adventure Book!), Jessica Swift, Color Me Katie, Danielle LaPorte, Alexandra Franzen, my clients, Broadway?.oh, I?ll stop there now.

3.?There are many culprits that can crush creativity, such as distractions, self-doubt and fear of failure. What tends to stand in the way of your creativity?

The Comparison Vampire! Oh, I call the voices we have in our heads that suck the good stuff outta us Vampires, and The Comparison Vampire tends to be the worst of all.

Look at how professional?her?videos are. Look at how perfect?his copy is. Blech. It makes you wanna just throw in the towel and never write another word or speak another sentence or pluck another tune ever again.

4.?How do you overcome these obstacles?

I think a big part of it is being confident and authentic in what you?re doing. Sure, his copy might be ?perfect? and her videos might be ?professional,? but mine are 100 percent Michelle at all times, and I?m proud of what I produce.

I?m all there, singing or speaking or writing my heart out, and I?m confident that what I put out into the world represents my uniquity, my perspective, and my knowledge. Let?s face it: They?re not better than you, They?re?different. Two separate things.

5. ?What are some of your favorite resources on creativity?

Anything that Keri Smith puts out is worth picking up and working through. It looks easy on the surface to follow her exercises (i.e. smear food on this page of the book, tie a string around the book and take it for a walk, etc.), but actually confronts our Vampires and can be a great (yet scary!) learning experience.

I also recommend the Right Brain Business Plan?to any and all creative entrepreneurs (I have one!), aspiring or otherwise. The Artist in the Office is also a must for those of us barely surviving our day jobs, and nothing beats The Artist?s Way for tapping into your inner creative.

6. ?What is your favorite way to get your creative juices flowing?

For writing, I keep tons of images with inspiring sayings on a Pinterest board, and that?ll be my first stop if I need something to write about. For my songs, I tend to have an idea as to what I wanna sing about (it?s recently been about my?boob cancer, oddly enough), and then rhymes come to me on the subway, when I?m about to fall asleep, or in the shower. I always have my iPhone handy to take notes.

7. ?What?s your advice for readers on cultivating creativity?

Don?t wait for lightening to strike or the perfect moment where inspiration knocks you over ? because it often doesn?t happen that way. Instead, show up to do the work and start wherever feels easiest.

Sometimes I start a blog post in the middle because the beginning just won?t come to me. Sometimes I write a song with the chorus leading the way because the verses are elusive. Do something every day for a small bite of time (yes, you can?get a lot accomplished in 15 minutes a day, thankyouverymuch) and you?ll be able to have a tangible product in no time.

Also, don?t be married to the format. Sometimes I know I need to write a blog post, but writing feels hard in that moment?so I make a video instead. Pay attention to what feels fun and easy at the time, and know if you move forward with that it?s not cheating.

8. ?Anything else you?d like readers to know about creativity?

Wanna know a secret? You?re creative. You might not believe me, but it?s true! We all have it in us?just start believing that I?m talking to you when I mention ?creative people,? start exploring in a fun and easy way, and you?ll be able to own that title more than you think!

iOS, Android once again grow market shares at RIM and Microsoft?s expense

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An Occupy Wall Street protester has lost his latest bid to prevent the Manhattan district attorney's office from using his tweets against him, clearing the way for the judge overseeing the case to unseal the tweets and give them to prosecutors. In a case that has drawn the attention of electronic privacy advocates, a New York judge denied a request from the protester, Malcolm Harris, to put the tweets on ice while his appeal is pending. ...

Painting Kitchen Cabinets: What's Involved For a Professional Finish ...

A kitchen remodel with new cabinetry costs big bucks. Instead of taking out a loan for a new look, consider painting your cabinets to refresh your kitchen. Let?s talk about what such a DIY project would involve and whether or not you might need to hire help for best results.

Photo credit by yugenro on Flickr

Removing Cabinet Doors and Drawers
Your first step will be to remove every cabinet door and drawer in your kitchen, while keeping track of both the hardware attaching the doors to the base, as well as the hardware you must remove from the doors and drawers, such as knobs and/or pulls. If your hardware is not the same for all doors and for all drawers, you will also want to organize it in such a way that you can easily know what to reattach where.

Sanding and Cleaning Cabinet Doors and Drawers
You will then want to sand any rough areas you find before thoroughly cleaning each door, drawer and surface with a sponge soaked with denatured alcohol, then wrung out. Denatured alcohol will remove any dirt and grease, but it also will emit stinky fumes so be sure to open windows in your kitchen and use floor fans.

Sealing and Painting All Surfaces
Once all surfaces are dry, which takes about an hour, apply your chosen paint. You will need to apply at least two thin coats for the best finish, with three recommended. Each coat takes about four hours to dry.

DIY vs. Hire
Whether you DIY this project or hire professional painters depends on your skill level and available free time. If you do not have painting experience, you might want to assign this to-do task out, as if you don?t get good results, you will be faced with them every time you enter the kitchen.

Also keep in mind the time it will take to do this project yourself. Many online DIY time estimators say to devote a weekend to this project, but that can vary greatly depending on how many cabinets you have. With the push toward greater storage in homes, you could have more than two dozen cabinets and drawers combined. Consider that you will need to remove, clean, prep, paint and reattach every single one. With drying time, it seems unlikely that you could accomplish all of that in a weekend, no matter how small the kitchen.

That said, a professional painter could get the job done in just a couple of days, as he or she will have the skill and help to accomplish this task on your timeline. You also will be more satisfied with the results because of that skill level.

As with all DIY vs. Hire situations, factor in how much your time is worth when comparing costs. If you have precious free time with your family, it might make more sense to leave this and other jobs such as these to the professionals.

Home Extension ? Over the Mountain Journal

By Laura McAlister
Journal Editor

Mary Evelyn McKee?s Mountain Brook home was originally built for an extended family, but for the last couple of years it?s been used by empty nesters ??until recently.

The interior decorator and owner of Mary Evelyn Interiors in Homewood has lived in her Mountain

Decorator Mary Evelyn McKee's granddaughter Madelyn is right at home in her new bedroom in Mary Evelyn's Mountain Brook home.

Decorator Mary Evelyn McKee's granddaughter Madelyn is right at home in her new bedroom in Mary Evelyn's Mountain Brook home.

Brook home for about eight years. Her three boys are grown, but one recently brought his family back to Birmingham from California.

Temporarily, the family of three are making their home with Mary Evelyn, and true to her design style, she?s making it one the family will likely want to stay in.

?This house really was built with an extended family in mind,? she said. ?So we?ve really come full circle.?

It also comes full circle with Mary Evelyn?s theme at this year?s Birmingham Botanical Gardens? Antique at The Gardens. Mary Evelyn is one of the tastemakers, and her theme will be pied-?-terre, a term frequently used in big cities to refer to a small, secondary living space ? or in the case of Mary Evelyn and part of her home, a temporary living space.

When it comes to tackling such spaces, Mary Evelyn takes the same approach as she would in a larger permanent space: It should be comfortable and inviting, combining special family pieces with beautiful design.

?I?m inspired by personal items of the people who inhabit the space,? she said. ?It has to have a soul. It has to come from the people who spend time there.?

Evidence of this philosophy is found all over Mary Evelyn?s own home.

Whether it?s in her permanent living space or her granddaughter?s room, Mary Evelyn mixes family heirlooms with a combination of modern and traditional pieces to create spaces that are inviting and, as she likes to say, ?less than perfect, and not too demanding.?

Take her granddaughter?s new room, for example.

That was a fun one for Mary Evelyn. Being the mother of three boys, she said it was fun to create a room for her 3-year-old granddaughter, Madelyn.

While it would have been easy to go with an all-over pink ? which there is plenty of in the bedroom ? Mary Evelyn added some surprising yet still feminine touches, like the wallpaper. The Nina Campbell wallpaper is covered in butterflies but has a softer palette. Mary Evelyn liked the way the pattern paired with an old rocking chair that has been in her family for five generations.

The old wooden single bed frame is also special to the family. It was Madelyn?s father?s when he was a child; now, it?s covered in hot pink bedding. Pillows in shades of pink by John Robshaw decorate the bed. Another splash of hot pink is found in the chair and chaise where Madelyn likes to sit and read.

?I?ve never had a little girl, so I might have gone overboard on the pink, but I think that?s OK,? Mary Evelyn said. ?I love the quote that ?hot pink is the navy blue of India.??

When it came to decorating the permanent living spaces in the house, the color palette is much more neutral.

The breakfast room is painted in Benjamin Moore?s Cotton Ball. Mary Evelyn designed the banquette seating with a Greek key trim along the bottom that?s paired with an antique trestle table.

?That table has been in every house we?ve had,? she said. ?It has a new life every time we move.?

Mary Evelyn found the large round mirror above the table years ago at Robert Hill Antiques. The chest on the opposite wall of the table repeats the Greek key border found on the banquette seating.

?I?ve just always been drawn to neoclassical elements,? Mary Evelyn said.

She also is drawn to art, which is displayed throughout the house.

One of her favorite paintings hangs in the gallery at the front of the house. It?s by Birmingham artist Annie Kammerer Butrus.

?It?s one of a series she?s done over the years on the Chilton County peach harvest,? Mary Evelyn said.

Mary Evelyn loves mixing storied family pieces in her home. The table, she said, has been in every home the McKees have lived in.

Mary Evelyn loves mixing storied family pieces in her home. The table, she said, has been in every home the McKees have lived in.

Mary Evelyn also loves to mix the old with the new, as she does in the downstairs powder room.

There, a modern steel bowl sink sits on top of a custom-made table. A wall of antique mirror gives the room a classic feel, and the room wouldn?t be complete without a family treasure: A trumpet vase that belonged to her husband?s great-grandmother is displayed next to the sink.

Mary Evelyn?s home is a mix of family heirlooms and classic pieces, giving the spaces a timeless feel, which is the design philosophy she?s had since starting her career in 1986.

Her success in decorating led her to open her store in Homewood about six years ago. There, just like in her home, she has a wide variety of accessories and furniture to make a home inviting yet comfortable.

Aggressive cancer exploits Myc oncogene to amplify global gene activity

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? For a cancer patient, over-expression of the MYC oncogene is a bad omen. Scientists have long known that in tumor cells, elevated levels of MYC's protein product, c-Myc, are associated with poor clinical outcomes, including increased rates of metastasis, recurrence, and mortality. Yet decades of research producing thousands of scientific papers on the subject have failed to consistently explain precisely how c-Myc exerts its effects across a broad range of cancer types. Until now, that is.

The prevailing theory emerging from this massive body of research has been that in tumor cells, c-Myc affects the expression of specific genes or sets of genes -- that so-called Myc target genes are being selectively activated or repressed, leading to aberrant cellular behavior. Now, however, researchers in the lab of Whitehead Institute Member Richard Young are dispelling this commonly held notion, showing that elevated expression of c-Myc amplifies the activity of all expressed genes in tumor cells of multiple cancer types. It turns out that high levels of c-Myc send a tumor cell's gene expression program into overdrive. Transcription increases dramatically, allowing malignant cells to overwhelm factors that might normally hamper their growth and proliferation. This surprising finding, published in this week's issue of the journal Cell, provides a simple, elegant explanation for how a single protein can have such profound effect in so many and varied types of cancer. The newly revealed mechanism may also help scientists develop novel therapeutic approaches that disrupt c-Myc's activity.

"MYC is a key driver in most major cancers, but it has been notoriously difficult to drug," says Young, who is also a professor of biology at MIT. "Now that we know the mechanism by which c-Myc acts, we can go after the components of that mechanism as potential drug targets. This research creates an even stronger impetus to find a way to drug the thing."

One potential drawback to thwarting c-Myc's activity is the important role it plays in normal cell division. That role is so powerful that cells co-evolved an emergency death pathway to keep c-Myc expression in check. If c-Myc's production spins out of control in an otherwise normal cell, the cell immediately commits suicide through a process called apoptosis. But in cancer cells in which c-Myc is overproduced, this suicide pathway is compromised, allowing the cell to survive and proliferate.

"MYC is the most deregulated gene in cancer," says Charles Lin, a graduate student in the Young lab and co-author of the Cell paper. "It's been called a bad-boy, a Swiss army knife, and a jack-of-all-trades because, according to previous research, it could do everything under the sun in a cancer cell. But most of the different attributes ascribed to MYC are contradictory or seemingly incompatible."

Propelled by its earlier research that identified c-Myc as an important regulator of transcription in embryonic stem cells, the Young lab began to focus on c-Myc's activity within cancer cells. Lab members found that as the expression of c-Myc increases in these cells, the protein attaches to the promoters and enhancers of all active genes, thereby amplifying the active genes' transcription. The heightened transcription produces cells bloated with excessive RNAs and proteins capable of altering normal cellular functions. Researchers observed this phenomenon in cells from a host of cancers, including Burkitt's lymphoma, small cell lung cancer, multiple myeloma, and glioblastoma multiforme.

"The previous research now makes sense -- finally!" says Jakob Lov?n, co-author and postdoctoral researcher in the Young lab. "Our findings provide a way to unify everybody's seemingly conflicting data. I think that's really nice. Instead of saying 'you're all wrong,' we're saying 'you're all right, and here's why.' The model makes a lot of sense in terms of the biology that has been described so far."

With a better understanding of how c-Myc can wreak so much damage, the Young lab is turning its efforts to disrupting c-Myc's activity. Although cancer cells that overproduce c-Myc are associated with poor clinical outcomes, their reliance on c-Myc for survival may represent an Achilles' heel. When these "Myc-addicted" cells are deprived of c-Myc in vitro, even for a short period of time, they quickly die. Research in mice has shown that, Myc-addicted tumors deprived of the protein shrink dramatically. Despite c-Myc's necessary role in normal cell division, particularly in tissues with rapid cell turnover, such as the intestine and blood, these mouse studies have shown that if c-Myc activity is restored after a brief period, normal tissues quickly bounce back, while tumors are unable to regain their footing.

"So what we think now is that potentially, if drugs can tune down the levels of transcription just slightly, this might be catastrophic for the Myc-addicted cancer cells," says Peter Rahl, co-author and postdoctoral researcher in the Young lab. "You wouldn't need to abolish all transcription because that would be toxic to your other cells. So we're hoping that our model will show us ways to create a therapeutic window where the Myc-addicted cells just won't be able to adapt to lower levels of transcripts."

Pacquiao ready to accept Mayweather's demands ? Boxing News ...

Pacquiao ready to accept Mayweather?s demands ? Boxing News

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao have finally come to agreeing terms regarding the defamation case filed by the Filipino?s attorney. The suit was filed back in 2009 when Floyd Mayweather accused Manny Pacquiao of using performance-enhancing drugs. According to a statement by Pacquiao?s attorney, nobody has the right to accuse an athlete of using performance-enhancing drugs without any evidence.

Last week, a US District court ruled against Mayweather, ordering the unbeaten American fighter to pay 70,000 in legal fees and the cost to avoid questioning under oath. However, now both Pacquiao and Mayweather have come to a resolution. The agreement was filed in a US District Court in Las Vegas and the terms are kept confidential, according to Malcolm LaVergne, Mayweather?s lawyer.

?The matter has been resolved. Any alleged terms of the resolution would be strictly confidential. Floyd Mayweather Snr is very happy that this lengthy case has finally come to a conclusion,? said Malcolm.

On the other hand, the Mayweathers, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his father Floyd Mayweather Sr., revealed that they are happy to learn the case has finally been solved.

?We wish to make it clear that they never intended to claim that Manny Pacquiao has used or is using any performance-enhancing drugs, nor are they aware of any evidence that Manny Pacquiao has used performance-enhancing drugs,? read a statement by the Mayweathers.

The agreement between the two rivals has further increased the chance of a super-fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao. According to Keith Kizer, the fight will be the most anticipated one in boxing history.

Pacquiao is currently scheduled to fight Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8. It will be the fourth time the Filipino will be locking horns against the Mexican legend. If Pacquiao wins the fight, he will have a better standing against Mayweather.

On the other hand, Mayweather is deciding to fight in December but his opponent is unknown yet. Currently, the American unbeaten is enjoying his time off and is busy promoting his newly formed TMT Promotions.

At least, this agreement is a step further towards a possible fight between the two, something that fans have been waiting for long.

Dragster sets speed record with cheesy biofuel

4 hrs.

A dragster powered by biofuel brewed from cheese-making waste has set a blistering land-speed record for a one liter, two cylinder engine of 64.4 miles per hour.?

?That, in that class, is fast,? Lance Seefeldt, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Utah State University, told NBC News on Tuesday.

Since no record existed for that size engine prior to Seefeldt's cruise down the Bonneville Salt Flats earlier this month, the the professor and his colleague first?set the ?record with petroleum-derived diesel.

?Then we backed it up with the biodiesel we made from the waste cheese process,? Seefeldt said.?

The waste is sugars that a yeast strain converts into oils that are then developed into biodiesel with a patent-pending procedure, he explained.

The team is also making biofuels with bacteria as well as microalgae, which convert carbon dioxide into fuel with energy from the sun.?

They?ve tested all three in the lab and found them to ?match commercial biodiesel in every way and, in some ways, they are even superior to petroleum diesel,? Seefeldt said.

For example, they burn cleaner and thus produce fewer air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, he said.

While the process to create the fuels is currently at the lab, proof-of-concept stage, the team can produce the yeast-derived version in gallon quantities.

That?s enough, they reckoned, to test the fuel in a small engine, so they built the Aggie-A-Salt dragster and raced at the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association?s 2012 World of Speed event.?

Check out the video below for raw footage from the speed test.

Now that the record is set, the team is back in the lab scaling up the bacteria and microalgae processes to produce enough fuel to race with them next summer.

?We want to run them head-to-head against each other at our top speeds, which we?re confident will be much faster next year,? Seefeldt said.

If all continues to go well, he added, the raw materials to produce these fuels at commercial scales is readily abundant.

The cheese factory where the team sources their waste material, for example, produces enough in a day for 66,000 gallons of fuel.

?You could multiply that across the country and different waste streams and, so it is infinitely scalable,? Seefeldt said.?

If the?technology is also able to compete in price with fossil fuels, then our future really could be cheesy.

Daughter of Bahrain opposition leader sentenced

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? The daughter of a jailed rights activist in Bahrain was sentenced Wednesday to two months in prison for damaging property at the police station, including tearing a picture of the Gulf nation's king, officials said.

Rights groups denounced the court's decision. They accused authorities in the tiny, but strategically important Gulf kingdom of escalating crackdowns on protesters from the Shiite majority, which is seeking a greater political voice in the Sunni-ruled nation.

More than 50 people have died in the unrest since February 2011 in Bahrain, the host of the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

A statement from Bahrain's Information Affairs Authority said Zainab al-Khawaja would complete the sentence within a week because of time served awaiting trial. She will remain detained for other "more serious charges," the statement said.

Al-Khawaja's defense lawyer, Mohammad al-Jishi, said the other charges are related to anti-government protests and alleged illegal gatherings.

Al-Khawaja's father, Abdulhadi, is among eight opposition figures, who were convicted of anti-state crimes last year and were sentenced to life imprisonment for their role in the Shiite-led uprising that was inspired by other Arab Spring protests against authoritarian regimes in the region. He staged a 110-day hunger strike earlier this year in protest.

Opinion - The Chronicle of Philanthropy

The city of Denver is trying to solve a problem others could only dream of: how to allocate a surplus of $57-million for cultural projects that was raised in the 2007 Better Denver bond approval but never spent, writes the Denver Post.

Although there are few limits on how the money can be spent, one requirement is that it must go toward existing, city-owned facilities.

Eleven Denver cultural groups, including the Buffalo Bill Museum, the Denver Botanic Gardens, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra,? the Museum of Nature and Science, and the National Western Complex, are among the institutions vying for a portion of the money.

To be eligible to receive the money, a nonprofit must be committed to raising funds that would match the city?s allocation. Proposals from nonprofits will be evaluated by a group of leaders representing local foundations, public works, corporations, and city government.

Five years ago voters approved a bond measure to support the Colorado Symphony Orchestra?s plans to make repairs to its concert hall. The symphony was unable to raise the required matching funds for the project, however, so the city is now free to use the money for other cultural endeavors.

prudsys release 3.2.4: new RDE client allows for more intuitive and ...

The focus of the new prudsys RDE 3.2.4. release for the prudsys RDE client is to allow for an even faster and easier RDE configuration through clear design and new functionality. In addition to the user interface, the six other prudsys RDE modules were also updated, expanding their functionality.

prudsys release 3.2.4: new RDE client allows for more intuitive and user-friendly interface with prudsys RDE

The new release of the prudsys RDE 3.2.4 (in short, prudsys RDE) is both technically sophisticated yet agile and easy to use. In recent months, realtime analytics specialist prudsys has not only been working on improving the RDE module itself, but also on the user-friendly operation of the leading personalization solution for online retail.

The result: the new prudsys RDE release can now implement sophisticated and individualized personalization projects even more easily.

RDE Client with clear design and expanded functionality
The focus of the new prudsys RDE release 3.2.4 is the new designed user interface, and not only by a cleaner design, but also through additional added features. The primary objective of this new client is simplification and usability. In this way, various functions such as special projects, parameter settings and statistics can now simply be marked with shortcuts and be called up quickly. Additionally, an extensive template library provides numerous ready-made, immediately accessible solutions. The new template concept, which is now divided into the levels template, boxes and slots, maps the most recommendations requirements realistically.

More in-depth statistics and filter in the Recommendations module
The new release for module prudsys RDE | Recommendations provides extended, more in-depth statistics that allows for the differentiation between recommendation templates and recommendations boxes. In addition to the known and established ratios, collected for all templates, now the recommendation outputs (the so-called prudsys Views) are template-specific and also viewable through the box view. Thus, the user sees the accepted clicks-per-box and the resulting sales amount attributable to each box. With this function, pinpointing exactly where additional revenue is generated is faster and easier than ever before.

Through a more flexible configuration of the recommendation types in the transaction history, it will be possible to discern which elements of the transaction history should be worked on in the future, and in what way. Therefore the user can decide whether the recommendations should be based either on the transaction history in the current session, or only based on transaction data, or whether both databases should develop recommendations together.

Even stronger dynamic price optimization with new algorithms
The module RDE | Pricing, which specializes in the optimization of dynamic pricing based on user behavior, has been expanded to include new algorithms. These allow for price calculation adjustments on virtually any additional parameters (i.e. for holidays, weather). The realtime price adjustment based on the integration of this information is now even faster and more up-to-date. A newly-developed offline simulation can now filter the most effective pricing algorithms for the future, and tests the various pricing algorithms against each other.

Module RDE | Data Cleansing turns into RDE | Search
The module prudsys RDE | Data Cleansing has been continuously developed and expanded to include additional functionalities. In order to better highlight its core functionalities, the module has been given a new name and is now available as prudsys RDE | Search.

Fort Pub and Grill ? VanFoodies.com

Fort Pub and?Grill

After a fun day out in the Fraser Valley, we stopped at Fort Pub and Grill for some food and drinks. It?s a nice, stand-alone establishment close to where the Albion Ferry terminal used to be, at the north tip of Fort Langley.

Food

In addition to food, we ordered a mini jug of Strongbow Cider. It?s about half the size of a pitcher, fills perhaps 2 pint glasses, and was recently priced at about $12.

Strongbow Cider

Strongbow Cider

We ordered two things. First, Fort Poutine isn?t only about fries, cheese curds and gravy. It included some spicy ground beef, sauteed onions and mushrooms, which added extra flavours to the otherwise ordinary poutine.

Fort Poutine

Fort Poutine ? Heaping bowl of house fries topped with spicy ground beef, sauteed onions, mushrooms and blended cheeses, then baked and drenched in beef gravy

The Personal Pizza actually has similar toppings as the Fort Poutine. The crust was not very thin, but it?s light and crispy. Kind of deep-fried bread like. The chipotle sauce was just OK; it tasted like spicy mayo or thousand island dressing.

Personal Pizza

Personal Pizza ? A 10? gourmet pizza with house tomato sauce, and topped with spicy beef, sauteed mushrooms, red onions and drizzled with chipotle sauce

Service

We were there for about 1.5-2 hours and we saw dishware shattered twice right in front of us, one when they were collecting empty glasses, another when they accidentally dropped a plate of food and spilled some on a customer?s lap. While accidents happen, I was just shocked at how clumsy the servers were and that 2 accidents would happen back-to-back. This also caused a delay in getting our food, so we waited for a good 45 mins-1 hour for a poutine and a pizza. We were offered a discount on our food bill, but we had to suffer through a long wait to get our food. I was really hungry by the time the food finally arrived.

Final Thoughts

The pub being in Fort Langley is nice but the food and service really needs some more work. I was quite disappointed in it.

A rodeo rider was released from a hospital after a bucking horse kicked him in the head during an event at Shawnee Mountain on Sunday.

Tim Kent was competing in the bareback competition, where riders try to stay on a bucking horse for 8 seconds. The rider holds onto a rawhide handle similar to a briefcase handle that's secured to the horse while it tries to throw the rider off.

Kent's handle, part of his personal equipment, was improperly adjusted and slid under the horse's belly, taking the rider with it, according to Marty Barnes, a member of the family owned business Barnes PRCA Rodeo that put on the show.

?The horse stepped on him? Barnes said. ?He must have hit him in the head at least once since he was knocked unconscious.?

Barns was in the ring as a pickup man to secure the horse after the ride was over.

Kent was life-flighted to Lehigh Valley Hospital where he was released either Sunday or Monday.

Kent is in his 20s, according to Barnes.

The accident was unusual for a rodeo. "I've seen this happen maybe twice in 30 years,? Barnes said.

Ex-Church Volunteers Gets Life for Molestation

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) -- An ex-church volunteer has pleaded guilty to sexually molesting nine youths and will serve a life sentence.

Cesar Pastrana pleaded guilty Friday in a Cobb County courtroom.

Authorities said Pastrana met victims while volunteering at NorthStar Church in Acworth.

Investigators said Pastrana confessed to police after initial allegations were made against him.

The families of the victims have filed a lawsuit against the church, arguing the abuse could have been prevented.

Church officials told WSB-TV that they could not comment because of the ongoing investigation. Pastrana is an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Washington Nationals Lead The Division as All 2012-2013 Games Get 20% Price Reduction

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) September 22, 2012

The Washington Nationals currently own the best record in Major League Baseball, as TicketHunterOnline announces a full 20% reduction of all 2012-2013 Washington Nationals game tickets with promo "NATS".

The Nats appear to have a playoff spot locked up, and are looking forward to postseason baseball in the nation's capital for the first time in almost a decade.

But why not take a quick glance into the future? After all, 2013 was supposed to be the year the Nationals put it all together. Now that they have arrived a year early, hopes are even higher for continued success.

2012 has been defined by stellar starting pitching, but after a superb second half of the season with their bats, there is reason to believe the Nats could enjoy a truly spectacular season at the plate next season.

At this time, there is a completely realistic possibility that the Washington Nationals could slug more home runs than any team in the league. More than the Yankees, and more than the Angels.

The Nationals have hit the second-most home runs in the N.L., and that's with a 19-year-old rookie in Bryce Harper, injured veterans in Michael Morse, Jayson Werth, and Ryan Zimmerman, and instability at the catcher position. The Nationals could have even more gopherballs than they already do, if only they had stayed healthy for the entire season.

Barring excessive injury, the Nationals could have five 30-HR hitters next season, and four 20-HR hitters.

Adam LaRoche, Ian Desmond, Ryan Zimmerman, Michael Morse, and Bryce Harper all have the ability to hit for enormous power when healthy. Those would be the 30-HR guys.

The 20-HR guys could be Danny Espinosa, Wilson Ramos, Jayson Werth, and Tyler Moore.

Desmond seems to have turned a huge corner and found an incredible power stroke. Had he been healthy this season, he would have well over 30 home runs.

Meanwhile, Zimmerman has been the Nationals' best hitter since the All-Star break, and if you extrapolate his numbers post-injury (and let's forget about the time he spent getting his timing back), he could have well over 30 as well.

Morse has already hit 30 in a season, but he was also taken down by the injury bug. In fact, I believe that Morse is a lock for 30 next season, should he remain healthy.

And Harper has 18, and that's with a prolonged slump in the middle of the year where he wasn't hitting anything. The sky is the limit for Harper. I predicted he'd have 17 home runs this year, he's already proven he can do better. I expect him to go over 30 in a full season next year.

As for the 20-HR guys, we start with Danny Espinosa. He may frustrate with his tendency to strike out, but he's almost a lock for 20 homers in a full season. He really started pounding the ball this year once he got comfortable.

Wilson Ramos hit 17 as a rookie before tearing his ACL this season. As the full-time starter next year, there's no reason to think he can't hit 20.

Jayson Werth has been out for a significant part of the season, but he's as sure a bet to get 20 homers as any guy in the league.

The 2012 version of the Nationals has been spectacular, but the 2013 version has a chance to be even better. Not many teams can boast legitimate top-to-bottom power.

The Nationals may lack the bat of a Ryan Braun or Josh Hamilton, but they may have the most well-rounded and dangerous lineup in all of baseball when healthy.

The full Washington Nationals Game schedule for the rest of the 2012-2013 season, as well as tickets, can be referenced at TicketHunterOnline.com.

The Ohio University Marching Band Doing That Gangnam Style Thing Is Actually Pretty Good I wanted to hate it, you know? Hot viral microshare reblog blah blah blah. But I also wanted to hate the actual video, and that's obviously the shit, so what can you do? These stupid nerds rocked it. I have nothing mean to say, about this routine, in particular. Good stuff. Looks hard! I hope it gets them all laid tonight, for the first time ever. Plus, Ohio beat Norfolk State 44-10, to go to 4-0. The victories are coming fast and furious in Athens.

UPDATE (8:40 p.m.): If you're wondering why the video doesn't make you nauseous anymore, it's because we switched in a better version.

PFT: Falcons unplug Chargers, improve to 3-0

Kansas City Chiefs v New Orleans SaintsGetty Images

It was a rough start this year for the Chiefs, who entered Sunday?s game at 0-2 and facing an uphill challenge in the Superdome against the Saints.

After the Chiefs made that uphill climb even steeper by erasing an 18-point deficit and won the game in overtime via a scoring drive that included a gutsy decision to go for a first down on fourth and short, I spoke with coach Romeo Crennel.

?How are you doing?? I asked.

?I?m better,? Crennel said with a chuckle.

?We got the first pickle out of the jar,? Crennel said later in the conversation.? ?Now we?ll see if we can get another one.?

Crennel explained it was ?almost? the biggest win of his head-coaching career.? ?Green Bay [last year] was a big one,? Crennel said.? ?This one was needed.?

He then explained the attitude he spent the week communicating to his players.? The goal is to ?keep fighting,? Crennel said, ignoring bad plays and preventing things from going bad to worse.

That mindset worked on Sunday, when the Chiefs somehow turned it around in the third quarter, sparked by a 91-yard touchdown run from Jamaal Charles.

But wasn?t Charles? surgically-repaired knee still bothering him?? ?I tried to tell everybody he wasn?t hurt,? Crennel said, explaining that Charles didn?t return to the Week Two game against the Bills after banging the knee because the other running backs were running well.

Charles ran extremely well Sunday, with 233 yards on 33 carries.? Still, Crennel said the goal is to ?still try to spread it around, because we have other good people who can run the ball.?

The win should bring a temporary end to some of the heavy criticism in Kansas City regarding the team?s performance during two consecutive losses to open the season.? ?I try not to listen, but I know how the game is,? Crennel said.? ?There was a lot of [criticism].? This reinforces we are headed in the right direction.?

And if they continue in that direction, there will be plenty of pickles.

Minglers Link to steal the Mulvaney Bookmakers Open 525 Semi-Final

Six potential winners of the ?50 prize money have made it to the semi-final of the Mulvaney Bookmakers Open 525. The OR event will be staged at Shelbourne Park on Saturday, 22nd September. Majority of the entries have tonight as their open race debut because their previous races range from Grade A2 to A6.

The pair who did try their luck at the level which they will get exposed to yet again tonight, failed dreadfully, ending fifth or sixth.

One of the most commendable entries for the semi-final is the two-year-old black bitch, Minglers Link. The lightly raced hound has been active only four times during the career that took off just this season.

Ballymac Maeve?s daughter won the Grade A6 Derby Transport Package 25 A6 525 Semi-Final on 29th August, 2012 at Shelbourne Park.

Setting into an early pace, and then maintaining the lead until the wire settled the race in 29.21 seconds while winning by the margin of just half-length.

Finishing right after the winner was, Hanover Lass.

The Moore trained then displayed her consistent composure by bagging the ?400 prize money of the Grade A6 Derby Transport Package 25 A6 525 Final on 5th September, 2012 at Shelbourne Park.

For a straight second time the two-year-old out of, Minglers Impact, broke from the fifth trap. She was fast to draw clear from the rest of the competition, and made it to the other end of the wire in 29.27 seconds.

Despite trying to maintain a bench mark of performance, the black bitch dropped down to the third position just when it was time for her to strike the hat-trick at Shelbourne Park.

The race was won by, Razldazl Panda, in 28.79 seconds and had the favourite entry, Laughil George, settling into the second slot.

This time Minglers Link shot out from the third trap rather than the usual fifth.

The 7 to 4 entry has drawn the first gate to break from today.

The rest of the line-up includes Courtlough Rio, The Other Sky, Olympic Queen, Branstown Rex and Scot Abbey.

Formulating a technique for being the first one through the wire after leashing out of the first box will make the trip smooth.

The company?s Air Maintenance Technology was rolled out of the lab this week for debut at a car show in Germany. Commercial truckers will be the first to put the rubber to test, but a consumer version is in the works.

As illustrated in the graphic above, a regulator in the tire senses when tire-inflation pressure drops below a pre-set point and opens to allow air flow into the pumping tube. As the tire rolls, deformation flattens the tube, pushing air through the tire to the inlet valve and then into the tire cavity.

All this technology, in Goodyear?s words, eliminates the need for ?external inflation pressure intervention.?

The hassle of interventions aside, maintaining properly inflated tires is key for fuel economy and the life of tire. For every 10 psi (pounds per square inch) of pressure lost, for example, there?s a corresponding one percent loss in miles per gallon, Goodyear explained in a news release.?

A one percent loss in miles per gallon translates to $627 down the drain for a truck that gets 6.6 miles per gallon, drives 100,000 miles a year, and fills up with diesel that costs $4.10 per gallon, according to the company.

Properly inflated tires will also last longer and handle better on the road, Goodyear notes.?

While there?s no price listed yet for the tires, assuming the fuel savings and reduced tire replacement costs pencil out over the life of the vehicle, the technology seems like a wise investment with the added bonus of reducing carbon dioxide emissions via the fuel savings.

And, what?s more, no longer will you need to think about checking your tire pressure, which you probably haven?t done for a long time anyway.?

Rising deficit puts Britain at risk of debt goal miss

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's budget deficit widened to the biggest on record for any August, data showed on Friday, a day after the central bank chief said missing its debt goal was acceptable for the government.

Public sector net borrowing excluding financial sector interventions rose to 14.410 billion pounds from 14.365 billion in August 2011 as Britain's recession hit company tax receipts and drove up benefit payments.

That was the highest for any August since records began in January 1993, although slightly below economists' forecast in a Reuters poll for 15.0 billion pounds.

Chancellor George Osborne, who has made reducing the deficit a central plank of his policies, may soon face a tough choice between cutting spending further or abandoning his goal of ensuring that the debt-to-GDP ratio starts falling by 2015.

The lack of growth and the rising debt pile have increased the tension within the coalition of Conservatives and Lib Dems, with some Conservatives urging more cuts to welfare.

The Labour opposition, meanwhile, is calling for a loosening of the austerity plan of tax hikes and spending cuts, aimed at erasing the structural budget deficit within five years and reducing the debt-to-GDP ratio.

Late on Thursday, Bank of England Governor Mervyn King - a firm supporter of the government's efforts to cut the budget gap - said missing the 2015 debt goal would be acceptable if the reason was weakness in the economy.

"We heard from Mervyn King last night they are going to bust the debt target," BNP economist David Tinsley said. "But that was always a stupid target anyway. I know it's difficult politically to break that but it is sensible economics. I think it's unavoidable."

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted back in July that Britain's debt-to-GDP ratio will not fall by 2015. Nevertheless, the fund suggested the government ease back on austerity if the economy failed to recover by early 2013.

The fallout from the financial crisis left Britain with one of the biggest budget deficits of all major economies and its public sector net debt-to-GDP ratio has climbed to around 66 percent in August from some 36 percent before the crisis.

But the country has so far kept its top credit rating as the ratio is still lower than in countries like the United States.

And Britain's borrowing costs are still near record-lows, indicating the market's trust in the government's commitment to its fiscal plans.

TOUGH CHOICES

In March, the budget watchdog - the Office for Budget Responsibility - predicted a fall in the deficit to 5.8 percent of GDP in the 2012/13 fiscal year from around 8 percent in 2011/2012, but economists say that borrowing now looks set to overshoot forecasts by up to 30 billion.

Commenting on the August data, the OBR said the government's expenditure ran close to forecasts but tax receipts were lower. "There continues to be significant uncertainty around the prospects for full-year borrowing," it said.

Borrowing in the fiscal year to date fell to 31.003 billion pounds from 48.446 billion in the April-August period 2011.

However, stripping out a one-off transfer of Royal Mail pension assets, the gap stood at 59.0 billion pounds, up 21.8 percent compared with April-August 2011 - far above the OBR's forecast for the full year of an increase by just 0.5 percent.

In his annual Autumn Statement on December 5, Osborne is likely to face yet another downgrade in the OBR's economic growth forecast, as well as a gloomy outlook for the budget deficit.

"If the chancellor follows the (BoE) governor's lead - and we expect he will - then he will stick with the current fiscal plans ... but will not introduce extra fiscal tightening to correct the adverse effects on revenues of economic weakness," Citi economist Michael Saunders said.

But Osborne faces a rough ride.

His austerity drive has made him one of Britain's most unpopular politicians as the country is struggling to move out of recession and a meaningful recovery looks elusive despite the central bank's 375 billion pounds of stimulus bond purchases.

BoE policymaker Spencer Dale on Friday called the economic backdrop still "pretty challenging", but also noted encouraging signs that access to bank loans was becoming easier for firms due to the BoE's Funding for Lending Scheme.

The government had originally planned to eliminate the structural budget deficit by 2015 but a weak economy has forced it to extend austerity by another two years and Prime Minister David Cameron has warned it could even last until 2020.

Friday's data showed that government receipts rose 1.8 percent on the year in August, while current spending grew 2.5 percent. Within that, corporation tax inflows fell 2.1 percent on the year, while social benefit payments rose 4.9 percent.
