SAS to cut jobs and sell assets in survival plan

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Loss-making airline SAS will shed nearly 6,000 staff through cuts and asset sales to secure loans from banks and Nordic governments to help it survive a global downturn and fierce competition.

SAS , one of the European flag-carriers being squeezed by discount carriers such as Ryanair and Norwegian , has not made a full-year profit since 2007. Without the loans, SAS might have to stop flying.

It said 800 jobs would be cut and the sales of regional airline Wideroe and the group's ground handling unit would reduce staff to around 9,000 in total from 15,000 now.

Announcing its new savings plan on Monday, it said it expected a slight pretax loss again this year.

"This truly is our 'final call' if there is to be a SAS in the future," said SAS chief executive Rickard Gustafson.

The group said it aimed to improve earnings by 3 billion crowns by cutting costs while asset sales would strengthen the company's balance sheet by 3 billion crowns. The new credit facility is worth around 3.5 billion crowns ($520 million).

The credit, being provided by seven banks and the governments of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, is conditional on signing agreements with unions on the job and wage cuts and getting parliamentary approval where necessary.

Gustafson said the company needed to get the deal with unions in place in a week. The company said in a statement it would sell Norwegian unit Wideroe, aircraft engines, some real estate and the group's ground handling unit.

"I know that we are asking a lot of our employees, but there is no other way. I hope that our loyal and dedicated employees are willing to fight for the survival of SAS and for our jobs," Gustafson added in the statement.

Staff will take pay cuts of up to 17 percent, depending on what part of the organization they work in. Cabin staff will see their pay reduced on average by 12 percent.

Gustafson said he would take a 20 percent cut.

Another headache for the company has been an expected massive pension deficit of 12 billion crowns ($1.78 billion) due to accounting changes, which it said threatened to wipe out the group shareholder equity.

SAS said would change the terms of its pension plan and take other measures to reduce the deficit to 7.6 billion crowns.

"We are not exactly toasting in champagne today," said Jan Levi Skogvang, leader of Norwegiant union Parat Air travel.

"However, I think that we are determined to contribute to solve the situation ... We will now look carefully at the savings plan and go from there," he said.

Sweden said it was not providing free money to SAS.

"The credit facility is the promise of a loan and not a capital injection," the government said in a statement.

Sweden said it wanted eventually to find a buyer for SAS and that the cost cut plan could make that easier.

Swedbank First Securities analyst Hans Erik Jacobsen said the plan would give SAS some breathing room.

"But there is a lot of hard work to be done...I think, eventually, they will be taken over by someone bigger," he said.

HIGH COST AIRLINE

SAS's troubles come a troubled time for the air industry, with Spanish airline Iberia last week saying it would axe almost a quarter of its workforce.

But SAS has higher costs than its rivals, even if it has tried to change from being a traditional full service airline. It also flies on very competitive European routes.

Its 2011 annual report showed its unit costs were on average 0.86 Swedish crowns ($0.13) per available seat flown over the year, whereas Norwegian Air Shuttle's was 0.45 Norwegian crowns (0.08).

SAS flew 27.1 million passengers in 2011 with 15,000 employees, whereas Norwegian carried 15.7 million passengers with 2,555 staff at end 2011.

SAS has lost 12.4 billion Swedish crowns since the start of 2002 and already sold off assets worth 80 billion Swedish crowns over 12 years.

For SAS jet fuel - at 7.8 billion crowns - was 20 percent of overall costs in 2011, second only to payroll at 34 percent. For arch rival Norwegian,

Possible tie between fever, flu in pregnancy and autism - 21 News ...

By Amanda Gardner
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, Nov. 12 (HealthDay News) -- Children of mothers who contract the flu or have a prolonged fever while pregnant may have a very slight increased risk of developing autism spectrum disorder, a new study suggests.

However, women who have had lasting fever or the flu during pregnancy should not be overly concerned by these results, as the risk seen was extremely small.

Mild infections were not associated with an increased risk of autism, Danish researchers found. Antibiotic use was associated only with a very low, speculative risk, according to the study published online Nov. 12 and in the December print issue of Pediatrics.

"[This] study is purely explorative and it is far too soon to suggest any clinical implications," said study lead author Dr. Hjordis Osk Atladottir, of the Institute of Epidemiology and Social Medicine at University of Aarhus.

"Indeed," she added, "the study shows that around 99 percent of women experiencing influenza, fever or taking antibiotics during pregnancy do not have children with autism."

Having an infection triggers the body's immune system, setting off a reaction intended to thwart the danger.

This is good when it comes to defending the body, but studies have suggested that activation of the mother's immune system may harm a fetus's neurodevelopment.

No one knows exactly why this may be the case but, Atladottir said, "previous studies suggest that the activation of the maternal immune system affects the levels of certain cytokines in the maternal blood."

Cytokines are message-carrying cells of the immune system. Some cytokines can cross the placental barrier and, here, may be "able to alter the release of neurotransmitters and thus affect fetal brain development," Atladottir said. She emphasized that this idea is purely speculative.

Another autism expert discussed the possibility that infection in pregnancy could somehow affect an infant's brain development.

Animal studies "suggest that maternal immune infection produces long-lasting changes in the brain, including those seen in individuals on the autism spectrum," said Alycia Halladay, senior director of environmental and clinical sciences at Autism Speaks. "Research suggests specific chemicals, called cytokines, may mediate this effect."

One in 88 children in the United States has an autism spectrum disorder, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is an umbrella term for developmental disorders that can range from mild to severe and that often affect social and communication skills. Little is known about what causes autism or precisely why rates seem to be increasing.

For this study, researchers asked mothers of almost 100,000 children born in Denmark between 1997 and 2003 about their history of infection, influenza and antibiotic use during pregnancy.

Children of mothers who reported having the flu while pregnant were twice as likely to develop autism. Having a fever for a week or more was associated with triple the risk.

Common urinary, respiratory and genital infections were not linked with an increased risk, the investigators noted.

Antibiotic use was associated with an almost-dismissible increased risk, although the authors noted that some drugs in this class may affect the function of folic acid, which is essential for fetal neurodevelopment.

But as the authors themselves noted, the study did have a number of limitations, including the fact that the women themselves reported whether or not they had been sick during pregnancy, a potentially unreliable measure.

There's also a possibility that pure chance played a role in the findings, Atladottir said.

"We made over a hundred statistical tests," she said. "The mathematical rule is that around 5 percent of the tests are statistically significant by pure chance. Our few statistically significant findings could thus be the result of coincidence," Atladottir pointed out.

"Thus, we must say that our study is speculative and we have to study this topic further before concluding anything," she said.

U.S. expert Halladay had advice for mothers-to-be.

"Pregnant women should follow the direction of their doctor or health care provider to maintain a healthy pregnancy," Halladay said. "This includes avoiding illness and infection."

While the study found a possible association between maternal infection and autism, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

The Bogus Part of Business Travel | Browsing The Atlas

Imagine this:

?Julie, can you make it to the staff meeting on November 12th??

?Let me check.? A reasonable pause ensues. ?No, I?m in Singapore that week. How about November 30th??

?No, I have to go to Germany that week.?

Pause.

Are you catching this? I have to check my calendar? Someone has to go to Germany? It?s ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. Trust me; I know exactly what I?m doing on November 12th, where I?ll be, what time my flights are, my tours start, and what the weather forecast in Singapore is for that day. I?ve read three tour books, lined up as much sightseeing as I can, and already have a map of the Metro. I do not need to check my calendar to know where I?ll be on November 12th.

The most bogus part of business travel is that we have to pretend we?re not over-the-top excited about it.? We drum up more excitement about where we?re going to have lunch on any given day than we do about traveling halfway around the world on the company?s dime. It?s ludicrous.

Here?s what?s really going through my mind:

?Julie, can you make it to the staff meeting on November 12th??

No! I?ll be in Singapore! Oh my God, I?m going to Singapore! I never thought I?d go there.?What should I pack? I know it?s humid. I?ve got to go get some tour books. I wonder how much free time I?ll have in the evenings? I?d better add on a couple of vacations days. What can I do there? Oh my God, I?m so excited!

I?d like to do a happy dance. I?d like to jump up and down and squeal like a little girl, but instead I have to bite my lip and act as if it?s no big deal and?that I couldn?t care less if they send me or not. Because it?s work. And work isn?t supposed to be fun, right?

Then, when I get back, the pretense starts again.

?How was Singapore??

?Good. We made a lot of progress; got a lot of work done.?

Not a word about the all the incredible sights I?ve seen or things I?ve done. All anyone wants to know about is the meeting I was there for. I?ll almost have to pretend the rest never happened. That I didn?t traipse all over Chinatown, and Little India, and spend half a day in Malaysia, or go on the night safari.?I?ll just describe the hotel and the office and give a brief, two-word report on the meetings themselves. That?s what they want to know about.

How bogus is that?

Have you traveled on business? Did you have to pretend that it wasn?t the greatest thing ever?

Double dip: return of the fondue | Life and style | guardian.co.uk

A cheese fondue

A cheese fondue. Photograph: Riou/photocuisine/Corbis

I can still recall the vicarious excitement I felt when my parents had people round for dinner. The best coffee pot came out, the same one that Meg Richardson used to have on Crossroads, so did the sugar that looks like gravel and the Blue Nun was chilled. Thank God they weren't Demis Roussos fans, but otherwise the scene was perfectly set for an evening of dunking "French" bread into a pot of melted cheese.

Fondue parties were synonymous with the 70s, perhaps because the rolling power cuts meant that a fillet of boeuf en daube, slow cooking in an electric oven, could at any given moment be ruined. Or maybe it was just part and parcel of the tentative embracing of Europe, which included experimenting with "their" culinary habits.

We hadn't yet gone quite as far as eating aubergines, but melting cheese in a communal pot brought with it not just a whiff of Gruy?re but continental sophistication. My parents never actually used "foreign" cheeses. Cheddar fondues were the thing ? until they became a thing of the past. But they're back.

A double dip recession makes eating in and getting your guests to cook for themselves the eating out for cash-poor and time-poor bons viveurs. Suddenly, there's a whole range of different cook-it-yourself sets to cater to this - not just pronged forks, spirit lamps and fondue pans either. Nor, and this is good news for those with the 21st century affliction of wheat and dairy intolerances, are the ingredients all wheaty and cheesy.

Danish designer Bodum do a sleek matt electric table grill, replete with stylish stripe of muted colour. John Lewis sells stone raclette sets, party wok kits and perennially child friendly chocolate fondue sets.

There are mini tabletop pizza ovens, a thing called a Pierre Chaud, a hot rock on which you can cook your own steak and, my favourite, the Tatar's hat, which I came across in Switzerland. It's a conical shaped (hence the name) grill with hooks on to which you lob pieces of meat or fish and let them cook while vegetables simmer in the juices that collect in a pan underneath. When the owner of my Swiss restaurant was asked if there was a vegetarian option, he replied with a resounding Swiss "no!".

The current fondue renaissance may owe something to the popularity of the TV show Come Dine With Me, and off the back of it Swan has a range of communal Come Dine With Me cooking sets which include place settings and party games - though not the old favourite "guess who dropped their bread in the fondue pot".

The Table Top Cooking Company which sells just about every conceivable kind of communal cooking device also suggests recipes which include seared beef with coriander and lime dressing, and chilli grilled shrimp. But if you are a traditionalist then take inspiration from chefs like Heston Blumenthal who knows how to turn a fondue into a gourmet meal.

The Swiss St Moritz restaurant in Wardour Street offers a choice of seven savoury fondues including a couple of meat options while L'Art Du Fromage in Chelsea, as the name suggests does artisan cheese fondues.

A lot of Mexican dining requires a bit of self-assembly, with selections of things arriving on cast iron platters from which you must create your own tortilla. Also gaining in popularity are Mongolian barbecue joints such as Gobi in Brighton which, rather than singing, requires the punter to stir-fry for their supper.

To me, going out to cook your own food rather defeats the object but I'm very happy with the idea of sitting round the table with friends at home and cooking together, rather than sweating over a hot stove and feeling slightly excluded from the conversation. It's a kitchen supper taken a step further but, as yet, with no colloquial name to be bandied around by Frances Maude and his ilk: Table Top Tea anyone?

Woman who drove on sidewalk must wear 'idiot' sign

(AP) ? A woman caught on camera driving on a sidewalk to avoid a Cleveland school bus that was unloading children will have to stand at an intersection wearing a sign warning about idiots.

Court records show a Cleveland Municipal Court judge on Monday ordered 32-year-old Shena Hardin to stand at an intersection for two days next week. She will have to wear a sign saying: "Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus."

The judge ordered her to wear the sign from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. both days.

Hardin's license was suspended for 30 days and she was ordered to pay $250 in court costs.

Messages seeking comment were left at a telephone listing for Hardin and at her attorney's office.

Grape seed extract bollixes norovirus

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? Norovirus causes more than half of all food-born illnesses in the United States, and is the second greatest source of reported food borne illness outbreaks in the European Union. A recent study found that grape seed extract could reduce the infectivity of Norovirus surrogates (Norovirus surrogates are viruses that share pathological and/or biological features with human norovirus). Now, Dan Li of Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium and collaborators have shown that grape seed extract does so by denaturing the capsid protein, which is the coat of the virus, thereby disabling the virus.

The research is published in the November 2012 issue of Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

In the study, the researchers observed that under treatment with grape seed extract, at low doses, the spherically-shaped murine (mouse) norovirus-1 coat proteins clumped, and showed "obvious deformation and inflation," according to the report. At higher doses, the researchers saw no coat proteins, only protein debris. "This provides evidence that [grape seed extract] could effectively damage the [norovirus] capsid protein, which could reduce viral binding ability and infectivity accordingly," according to the report.

The researchers used surrogate viruses because there are no suitable animal models of norovirus, and human norovirus has been impossible to propagate in cell cultures. The surrogate virus, murine norovirus-1, can be grown in cell culture, and belongs to the same genus as human norovirus, and has a very similar genome structure, and morphology. Nonetheless, the researchers were able to measure the specific binding strength of human norovirus by two different methods, finding that it declined precipitously under the influence of grape seed extract, providing further support to their results.

Norovirus is transmitted mainly fecal-orally, and infected food handlers, contaminated water, and surfaces can be identified as important sources of transmission, "which could further contaminate ready-to-eat foods, drinking water, shellfish, and fresh produce," says Li. A mere 10-100 virus particles are sufficient to transmit the disease.

Appeals court rejects torture suit against Rumsfeld

(Reuters) - Two American citizens cannot sue former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld over allegations that they were tortured by the U.S. military in Iraq, a federal appeals court ruled on Wednesday.

Donald Vance and Nathan Ertel had said Rumsfeld and unnamed others allegedly developed, authorized and used harsh interrogation techniques against them in Iraq.

In an 8-3 ruling, the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, in Chicago, found that the two men had no right to sue Rumsfeld and others in the military chain of command for damages.

The decision overturned decisions by a three-judge panel of the same appeals court and a federal judge in Illinois, which had allowed the suit to proceed despite efforts by the former Bush and current Obama administration to get the case dismissed.

The ruling brings the 7th Circuit in line with two other federal courts of appeal, the 4th Circuit and the District of Columbia Circuit, which have also rejected suits for damages against U.S. officials over allegations of torture.

In the latest case, the two men worked for a private security company in Iraq in 2006 and said they became concerned the firm was engaging in illegal bribery or other corruption activities. They notified U.S. authorities and began cooperating with them.

In early 2006, they were taken into custody by U.S. military forces and eventually taken to Camp Cropper near Baghdad's airport. Vance and Ertel claimed they were subjected to harsh interrogations and physical and emotional abuse.

They said that months later they were unceremoniously dropped at the airport and never charged with a crime. They sued, seeking unspecified damages, saying their constitutional rights had been violated and U.S. officials knew they were innocent.

A three-judge panel last year ruled that while it may have been unusual for Rumsfeld to be personally responsible for the treatment of detainees, the two men had sufficiently argued that decisions were made at the highest levels of government. But a larger panel of the appeals court disagreed on Wednesday.

"A court cannot say that, if there are too few prosecutions (or other enforcement), and thus too much crime, then the Attorney General or the Secretary of Defense is personally liable to victims of (preventable) crime," Judge Frank Easterbrook wrote for the majority.

Three judges dissented in three different opinions, saying the majority had created immunity for all members of the military, in violation of Supreme Court precedent.

"This new absolute immunity applies not only to former Secretary Rumsfeld but to all members of the military, including those who were literally hands-on in torturing these plaintiffs," Judge David Hamilton wrote in his dissent.

The case is Vance et al v. Rumsfeld et al, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit, Nos. 10-1687, 10-2442.

Personal Bankruptcy Lawyers And What You Should Know About ...

Simply mentioning the word bankruptcy can cause people to become nervous and worried. From fears of growing debt to worrying that they?ll no longer be able to provide for their families, people have good reasons to be scared. If you are in a situation that may require a bankruptcy filing, don?t let fear overcome you. Read this article and learn valuable tips and advice to make this scary situation much more manageable.

Your lawyer should not make decisions for you. It?s true that your attorney knows the ins and outs of bankruptcy, but staying informed about the progress of your case is a good idea. While you do need to trust your lawyer, it is your money that they are dealing with? you need to stay in control as much as possible.

TIP! When bankruptcy seem inevitable it is important not to use your retirement funds or emergency savings to pay creditors. You should not use your retirement savings unless the situation calls for it.

Learn everything you can. If you need to file for bankruptcy and you can?t afford an attorney, you may wish to do it yourself. If you decide to go this way, be sure you are thoroughly educated. Those that do it themselves commonly make errors, preventing them in securing a discharge. Make sure you do everything correctly so that does not happen.

Remember that filing for Chapter 7 personal bankruptcy will not just affect you. Think about the effect it will have on business associates, friends and family or anyone else who may be a co-signer with you. You can relieve yourself of any liability for debts that you may share with someone else through a Chapter 7 filing. However, if you had a co-debtor, they will be required to pay the debt.

TIP! If you?re unsure, then you need to learn what a Chapter 7 bankruptcy can do for you, as opposed to what Chapter 13 does. Learn the benefits and drawbacks of each type before deciding which is right for you.

Document your questions and concerns prior to sitting down with a bankruptcy attorney. An attorney?s time can be very costly. Be armed with intelligent questions and accurate information with you meet with your attorney. See to it that you understand everything that is going on.

Bankruptcy can be a good time to spend time with people you love. Filing for bankruptcy is a difficult process. It takes a long time, it can be stressful, and people feel unworthy, guilty and ashamed. It can be hard to face the world while the bankruptcy process is taking place. However, self imposed isolation will only make you feel even worse about the process and could even lead to depression. For this reason, if you are undergoing personal bankruptcy proceedings, you must continue to live a normal life, spending time with your friends and relations.

Before you file for personal bankruptcy, become more fiscally responsible. Be certain not to incur extra debt or increase the amount of debt you already have. When creditors and the judge are deciding on your case, they will consider your current credit history as well as your past credit mistakes. You should demonstrate through your current behavior that you are actively changing your personal financial habits.

TIP! Take action when the time is right. Timing is very important when it comes to personal bankruptcy filings.

Be careful how you pay off any debts prior to filing for personal bankruptcy. Some bankruptcy rules do not allow you to send money to creditors within three months of filing; this can extend up to a full year if a loved one is involved. You need to know the law before you decide to file for bankruptcy.

Do your homework first before you decide to file for personal bankruptcy. Think carefully about your situation with debt and determine which debts can be discharged with your bankruptcy. Some debts, including credit card charges for luxuries, may not be discharageable if they were made less than three months prior to the filing date. So it is a good idea you understand the laws in your own state.

It?s normal for people to be scared of bankruptcy, since it really is a frightening process. While you may have been frightened of bankruptcy in the past, you don?t need to be scared anymore. This article has armed you with information. Use this personal bankruptcy advice as soon as possible and make things better for yourself and your loved ones.

Nearly 67 million viewers watch election coverage

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's re-election was well watched but wasn't the TV ratings record-breaker his first victory four years proved to be.

An estimated 66.8 million viewers watched election returns on broadcast and cable networks Tuesday, the Nielsen Co. said Wednesday.

The audience fell short of the record 71.5 million viewers who tuned in to the outcome of the 2008 contest and the historic election of the first African-American president.

NBC came out on top among all networks, averaging 12.1 million viewers during the three hours of prime time, 8-11 p.m. Fox News Channel held the No. 2 slot with 11.45 million viewers, the biggest average ever in the network's 16-year history.

Among other networks, ABC drew 10.52 million viewers, CNN had 9.25 million, CBS had 7.92 million, FOX (broadcast sister to Fox News) had 4.93 million and MSNBC had 4.7 million.

Cable rivals CNN and Fox News both could claim bragging rights, depending on how the pie is sliced.

Networks didn't call the race for Obama until after 11 p.m., so limiting ratings to prime time is akin to measuring viewership for the first three-quarters of an exciting football game decided in the fourth quarter.

Expand the window out to between 7 p.m. and 12 a.m., and Fox News had 10.6 million viewers to CNN's 8.9 million, Nielsen said.

Open it even wider, from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., and CNN has a narrow edge over Fox News: 8.8 million to 8.7 million. The later hours include Romney's concession speech and Obama's victory speech ? events that, presumably, wouldn't appeal as much to the Republicans who make up the bulk of Fox News' audience.

Nielsen measured viewership on 13 networks, including ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, Univision, Telemundo, CNBC, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, Current TV and TV One.

Quit Smoking, Live Longer | Women's Health News Blog: Latest ...

Need some extra motivation to kick your cigarette habit? This should do the trick: New research found that women who stop smoking before 40 live a decade longer than those who keep puffing into later life.

Recent findings from a study of over a million women found that smokers more than triple their risk of dying early compared to nonsmokers. Between 1996 and 2001 scientists from the University of Oxford in the U.K. recruited 1.3 million women aged 50?69 and questioned them about their smoking habits, medical history and social status. Twenty percent were smokers, 52 percent had never smoked, and 28 percent were ex-smokers. Women were questioned every few years throughout the twelve-year study, during which 66,000 participants died. Those who smoked throughout the duration of the study were three times as likely to die in the following nine years compared to those who didn?t smoke.

But it?s not all bad news?quitting today can help you down the line. The sooner you take your last drag the longer you?ll likely live, says Rachel Huxley, PhD, a professor of epidemiology and community health at the University of Minnesota who wrote an accompanying editorial to the study. Kicking the habit before middle age nearly eliminates the risk of premature death, and women who ditch the cigs in their 30s have even better odds of a long life. The reason: Fewer years of overall exposure to cigarette toxins that are linked to lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke, Huxley says.

But say you don?t smoke, or you already quit?there are other steps you can take right now to help prolong your life. Here, 5 other ways to lengthen your lifeline:

Drink wine
Wine lovers rejoice! Research confirms that moderate drinkers (one glass per day for women) slash their risk of heart disease up to 40 percent. Love vino? Try red wine from Madiran, France, which has up to five times as many procyanidins (antioxidants that improve blood vessel function) as wines from other areas, thanks to the region?s traditional production techniques, which allow grapes to ferment longer.

Say Yes To Soy?
Studies show that healthy women who eat soy at least once a week cut their risk of breast cancer?by 50 percent. But some research suggests that processed soy may actually rev up cancer cells, so chowing down on Veggie Dogs won?t cut it. Instead, stick to natural staples such as edamame, tofu, soy milk,?and miso.

Slash Stress
Over time, stress can increase your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity ? all things that take years off your life. Stress is easy to squash, so don?t fret. Most people rank personal finances as their number one stressor, typically because they feel powerless. Try this: Keep some money in a special bank account, safe from your urge to splurge on a new designer bag. This will help you feel more secure with your finances and help reduce stress. Not sure the current economy will allow for additional savings? Learn?the right way to negotiate a raise, or haggle for a discount.

Get Your Sweat On
Want to live longer? Hit the gym. Studies show that working out may lower a woman?s risk of breast cancer?by 37 percent, osteoporosis by 45 percent, and heart disease?by 14 percent.?A combination of cardio and weight training boosts metabolism and burns fat, keeping heart disease at bay.? Check out The Keep-Your-Heart-Pumping Workout to keep your ticker in tip-top shape. If peeling your butt of the couch is the challenge, try these simple ways to get motivated.??

Lose the Muffin Top
Maintaining a healthy weight not only keeps you looking hot in your hip-huggers, it wards off heart attacks and diabetes, too. To see if you?re a healthy size, check the circumference of your waist around your belly button. That number should be less than half your height. So if you?re 5?2? your waist should be less than 31 inches. Looking to whittle your middle? Avoiding processed foods laden with trans fats will help. Studies show that this type of fat packs on the most belly blubber, so limit yourself to 2 grams daily.

What earnings reports have revealed about ads

Companies that sell advertising have begun releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. Here are highlights of recent quarterly earnings reports from selected Internet and media companies and what they say about the state of spending on advertising.

? Oct. 15: Gannett Co. reports higher net income and revenue, helped by strong gains in political and Olympics-related advertising.

? Oct. 16: Advertising and marketing company Omnicom Group Inc. reports nearly flat earnings and revenue compared with a year earlier, as U.S. revenue grew but international revenue declined.

? Oct. 17: Television and digital media company Media General Inc. says its third-quarter net loss widened because of higher expenses, but revenue grew sharply thanks to an increase in political advertising and the Olympics.

? Oct. 18: Google Inc. says ad revenue rose 16 percent from the same time last year, the slowest pace in three years. The company's ad revenue had climbed by at least 21 percent in each of the previous 10 quarters. As has been the case for the past year, the average prices companies pay Google for ads appearing alongside search results also fell. The decelerating growth in ad revenue is likely being driven by the growing use of smartphones and tablet computers to access the Internet. The ads are more difficult to see on smartphones, in particular, so marketers aren't willing to pay as much.

Microsoft Corp. says revenue in its online services division grew 9 percent to $697 million, while operating loss fell 29 percent to $364 million. Online advertising revenue grew 15 percent to $655 million, with growth in search advertising revenue partly offset by lower revenue from display advertising. Microsoft says search revenue grew because of increased revenue per search and increased volumes.

? Oct. 22: Yahoo Inc. reports net revenue that barely grew at a time when advertisers are spending more money marketing their products and services online. Still, it beat expectations. Net revenue in the latest quarter rose 2 percent to $1.09 billion ? about $10 million more than analysts had predicted. Net revenue is the amount of money Yahoo keeps after paying its commission to search partner Microsoft and other sites that run its ads.

? Oct. 23: Facebook Inc. discloses that some 14 percent of its ad revenue came from mobile advertising. It started showing ads to users who access Facebook from their phones and tablet computers about six months ago. Investors have been worried that Facebook isn't taking advantage of its growing mobile user base.

? Oct. 25: The New York Times Co. says advertising revenue fell 9 percent in the third quarter to $182.6 million from $200.5 million a year earlier. The company says it expects fourth-quarter advertising trends to be similar to the third quarter.

WPP Group PLC, the world's largest advertising group, lowers its full-year outlook after not doing as well as expected from the Olympics, the U.S. presidential campaign and the European soccer championships.

The McClatchy Co., which owns The Miami Herald, The Sacramento Bee and other newspapers, says advertising revenue fell 5.4 percent to $212 million from $224.2 million a year ago.

? Oct. 26: Comcast Corp. says broadcast ad revenue at NBC more than doubled to $1.99 billion, and rose 9 percent excluding the Olympics. Ad revenue on pay TV networks such as Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC and NBC Sports was up less than 1 percent to $807 million. Comcast didn't say if pay TV network advertising revenue would have fallen without the boost from the Olympics.

The Interpublic Group of Cos., which owns advertising and marketing agencies, says the weak economy in Europe and slowdown in China have led a wide array of companies to cut spending on services such as marketing and advertising. Results missed expectations.

? Nov. 2: Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings Inc. says its third-quarter earnings surged as it sold more billboard advertising in several growing international markets to overcome weakening demand in many parts of Europe's ailing economy.

? Tuesday: News Corp., which owns the Fox network, says it saw increased local advertising, particularly for political ads. The gains were partly offset by lower national advertising revenue because of lower prime-time ratings and the Olympics on rival NBC. At its U.S. pay TV networks, advertising revenue rose 8 percent, led by Fox News and its regional sports networks.

AOL Inc. says its advertising revenue grew for the sixth straight quarter. Advertising revenue grew 7 percent to $340 million.

? Wednesday: Time Warner Inc. says ad revenue at its television networks fell 1 percent, as it saw better rates domestically but was hurt by the timing of certain sports events. It was also hurt by the shutdown of some channels overseas and by changes in currency exchange rates, in which ad sales made abroad converted back into fewer dollars. Ad revenue at the Time Inc. publishing business fell 5 percent.

?CBS Corp. says advertising revenue fell due to poor results from CBS Radio and the impact of having programs pre-empted by the Republican and Democratic national conventions.

Coming up:

? Thursday: The Walt Disney Co.

? Nov. 15: Viacom Inc.

Marketing Tips for Small Business | BusinessBlogs Hub

Our latest Project Campfire article focuses on marketing tips for small business. In this article there are 27 tips from business people all over the world. I have already learned a great deal from the tips below and I hope you will as well. Please share this post with other business owners and Entrepreneurs so we may all benefit.

Dont be afraid to find a niche

Particularly at the beginning, it is key to make sure that you have narrowed down your target market as tight as you can. Having this ?niche? allows you to focus your messages for the market better and stronger as well as helping you keep any marketing spend at a minimum.
This approach will take a lot of confidence in what you are doing as the natural inclination will be to try and sell to everyone and there will be a fear that you will be missing out on opportunities due to working within a niche but if you select the right niche and work it properly you will soon see the benefits and then be able to scale quicker.
Also, by working with a smaller and defined target market you will make life easier for any possible referrers or associated who are looking to try and help find you business opportunities.

Trade a car decal with another small business owner

I have begun a new marketing idea with my clients. They trade car decals and drive around, promoting each other (different states). We just started doing this and don?t have much feed back yet. I came up with this idea two years ago but waited until I had solid clients to run the test with ? folks who have good driving records, too, of course!

Know your target audience?

This may seem like an obvious one but it?s a tip I use routinely with clients. Remember that no-one knows you?re ?there? until you start to market, so getting it right by knowing your target audience is really important. Try to create an image of who your customer is ? what do they do / their age / interests / fish where the fishes are.

Use Strategic Alliances effectively

Over my years of business I have found that by far the most effective form of marketing has been using strategic alliances effectively. Strategic Alliances are businesses which share a similar target market as your business. Offer to give your strategic alliances something of value which they can give their clients. That something could be an article, a report, a money off voucher or something which showcases your product or service. All of a sudden you get access to their client list and often is doesn?t cost you a cent ? all you have to do is reciprocate the favour at a later stage.

When customers say goodbye, ask why

Tip: When customers unsubscibe from your email communications, do you say ?see you later?, or do you ask ?why??. If a business is built upon relationships with customers, then relevant conversations need to happen especially when a good, loyal customer is ready to walk off an email list. And with today?s email marketing technology, it?s so easy for customers to do so with a click of the unsubscribe button. Read more

3 ways to market your small business

Marketing a small business is hard, but there are ways to help potential customers find your business. Here are 3 ideas:

  1. Become an expert ? to do this, you need to publish interesting content. We recommend you start writing a blog. Use WordPress or Typepad to create it. Keep you articles interesting and include interesting images
  2. Create mix of content ? You?ll want to start creating all types of content ? such as webinars, podcasts (audio), e-books, white paper, etc. It?s critical that these items focus on your customer and not your business.
  3. Publish content everywhere ? Using social networks, your website, your blog, etc., post links to your content and make it easy to find.

Keep marketing even when you are busy

Being self-employed can be an income roller-coaster (see http://www.bizbuzz.co.nz/articles/ride-income-rollercoaster-and) so it?s vital to make time even when you are busy to keep up your marketing activities ? or the work or orders will dry up when you get to the end of whatever is keeping you busy. Diarise some time once a week or even once a month to do nothing but marketing. Click through to the article for more tips on how to manage and/or avoid the feast-and-famine scenario.

Combining Sales and Marketing

In many organisations sales & marketing do not work closely together. Consider combining your sales and marketing teams and think about giving your marketing department sales quotas for transactional sales.

Build Your Website First

Your first marketing dollars should go into building your website. Your website introduces your product or service to the world and also legitimizes your business. Work with an experienced web designer and copywriter to create a professional online image. Once launched, all future marketing tools ? business cards, brochures, press releases, ads, etc. ? should drive traffic to that website.

Talk about what you know. Teach.

Don?t flood your website with the USPs and benefits of your product. Simply talk about what you know. Teach people that come to your site. Use the different tools available like blogs, Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr to teach and be transparent. If you inspire your customers with what you know, the products or services will sell themselves.

Small Business Marketing

Every small business owner struggles with marketing their business. How should we position ourselves? What is the best way to get our message across? Cut the guesswork ? go to the horse?s mouth

Your target market probably sees your business way different to you. What?s important to them may be quite different to what seems important to you. There may be life issues, objections, and buying motivations that you?re unaware of. How can you tap into this? Interviewing. There are effective techniques to go beyond a clinical ?Q&A session? to find the deeper ?hot buttons?. Then have your sales pitch crafted accordingly.

Entrepreneurs! Learn This Mindset Shift About Marketing

Tip: Have you ever got excited about doing something and got stuck? It could be offering your expertise and charging for the same or selling your own product or someone else?s product as an affiliate. This little piggy went to Market

Marketing for small business, especially consulting or service businesses, is hard. You can waste a lot of time and money on differing approaches and still not get any results. Whatever you do, take the time to try to figure out the best avenue for you to use. I just wasted $800 on print media advertising, when I would have been better off putting that money into sign-writing my car. What gets better coverage than a mobile billboard?

The Power of the Press Release

One of the most difficult aspects of marketing is getting your website up the Google rankings and lets face it if you aren?t on page 1, or maybe page 2, you?ll be missing out on an awful lot of traffic. I have discovered a very simple cost effective way of significantly improving your ranking. Issue a press release through one of the well known agencies ? I use www.prnewswire.com who charge ?285 per release. I have seen our website rocket up the rankings within a few days of issue and a well planned campaign really will keep you there.

Understanding the available technology helps think outside the box

For mail and email campaigns, work with a web developer to include a unique invite URL in each mail merge that contains the recipient?s name (such as www.mybizname.com/NameSurname). Wouldn?t you be curious? This database driven landing page can be easily customised for each recipient, and usage tracked via Analytics ? which then facilitates informed follow-up. We manage to get 25-30% combined response rates. No ground breaking technology; just creative.

Network Anywhere, Anytime, with Anyone!

Word of mouth can be a powerful tool, so talk about your business to everyone you know. Your business has to be your passion. If you love it, you?ll love to talk about it. This passion will be infectious and is a great way to sell your personal brand along with the business. Talk in elevators, with a cashier, your stylist, in any line-up! Everyone can be a connection.

Don?t Overlook the Drycleaners

Be open about who can help you. Your target market might be in Target, at the drycleaners, or at church! These groups can help you reach their constituencies through newsletters, brochures, word of mouth. Most important, give back first. You can feature someone else?s product in your newsletter. It?s not about Linear Giving. Give of your resources?it will come back to you in ways you won?t expect? Start giving?
Pamela Hawley, UniversalGiving
www.universalgiving.org

Be consistent

Tip: However you brand yourself or market your business, ensure you are consistent across all mediums and communications, online and offline. Inconsistency can be both confusing and unsettling for your customers, which would be detrimental to your business offering. The same applies to your approach and consistency of services levels; important to any business but especially to the small business trying to differentiate themselves from their competitors.

Become a Familiar Face on Regional TV

Your regional TV?s stations will have a shopping/lifestyle programme which is an amazing opportunity to put yourself directly into the homes of your target market at affordable prices. This form of marketing quickly establishes a strong bond of trust & creditability for you & your business. When the viewer starts to enquire about your product/service they will treat you like a familiar friend as they know exactly who you are, what a fabulous way to start a working relationship.

Think Like A BIG Business

Tip: Just because you?re a small business doesn?t mean you have to act like one. If you can string a few sentences together about what?s new or coming up then you?re half way to putting out a Press Release, something the big boys do all the time. Target your local press and trade journals, they?re always after free material to use ? just make it interesting.

Keep your focus on your customers? needs

There are only three reasons for your customers to do business with you:

  1. To help identify or clarify their need for your product or service (so they?ll buy);
  2. To become more knowledgeable about your offering (so they?ll return again);
  3. To feel inspired by your service (so they?ll refer others to you).

That?s it. Everything you do and say, everything they see, perceive, and read about, should be focused on one or more of these things, or you?re just wasting time and money.
