UN observers in Syria discover 13 bound corpses

BEIRUT (AP) ? U.N. observers have discovered 13 bound corpses in eastern Syria, many of them apparently shot execution-style, the monitoring mission said Wednesday.

The announcement comes days after a massacre in Houla, in the central Homs province, which killed more than 100 people and prompted worldwide condemnation against the regime of President Bashar Assad. The Syrian government denied its troops were behind the killings and blamed "armed terrorists."

The latest killings apparently happened in Deir el-Zour province. The corpses were found with their hands tied behind their backs, according to a statement by the U.N. mission. Some appeared to have been shot in the head from a short distance.

The head of the U.N. observer team, Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, said he was "deeply disturbed by this appalling and inexcusable act."

The violence in Syria is spiraling out of control as an uprising against Assad that began in March 2011 has morphed into an armed insurgency.

In the wake of the Houla massacre, the United States and several other countries expelled Syrian diplomats to protest the killings. Survivors blamed pro-regime gunmen for at least some of the carnage in Houla.

The U.N.'s top human rights body planned to hold a special session Friday to address the massacre.

The U.S. Treasury Department also said it was levying sanctions on a key Syrian bank as it seeks to ratchet up economic pressure on the regime. The department said the Syria International Islamic Bank has been acting as a front for other Syrian financial institutions seeking to circumvent sanctions. The new penalties will prohibit the SIIB from engaging in transactions in the U.S. and will freeze any assets under U.S. jurisdiction.

Violence also continued elsewhere unabated. Syrian forces bombarded rebel-held areas in the same province where the Houla killings occurred, although no casualties were immediately reported, activists said.

Damascus had said it would conclude its own investigation into the Houla deaths by Wednesday but it was not clear if the findings would be made public.

Syria's state-run media on Wednesday denounced the diplomatic expulsions as "unprecedented hysteria."

The United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria ordered top Syrian diplomats to leave on Tuesday.

Turkey, Syria's neighbor and a former close ally, joined the coordinated protest on Wednesday. Turkey has been among the most outspoken critics of the Assad regime. It closed its embassy in Damascus in March and withdrew the ambassador. Its consulate in Aleppo remains open.

The Foreign Ministry said it ordered the Syrian charge d'affaires and other diplomats at the Syrian embassy in Ankara to leave the country within 72 hours. The consulate in Istanbul will remain open for consular duties only. Turkey also reduced the number of its personnel in the consulate in Aleppo, Syria, on Wednesday.

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said new unspecified sanctions might be imposed against Syria in the coming days. The world "cannot remain silent in the face of such a situation," he said.

Japan also ordered the Syrian ambassador in Tokyo to leave the country because of concerns about violence against civilians. Japan's foreign minister, Koichiro Genba, said his country was not, however, breaking off diplomatic ties with Syria.

The announcements came a day after the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria ordered top Syrian diplomats to leave.

Syria's ally, Russia, criticized the diplomatic moves.

"The banishment of Syrian ambassadors from the capitals of leading Western states seems to us to be a counterproductive step," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said. He said the move closes "important channels" to influence Syria.

U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan met with Assad on Tuesday in Damascus to try to salvage what was left of his peace plan, which since being brokered six weeks ago has failed to stop any of the violence on the ground.

The Al-Baath daily, the mouthpiece of Assad's Baath Party, said Syria won't be intimidated by such "violent rhythms" and would remain standing in front of such "ugly, bloody and dramatic shows." It added that "Syria will not tremble as they think."

The government's Al-Thawra newspaper also blasted the Western decision, calling it an "escalation that aims to besiege Annan's plan and enflame a civil war."

Tensions have escalated as more information emerges about the May 25 killings in Houla.

The U.N.'s human rights office said most of the 108 victims were shot execution-style at close range, with fewer than 20 people cut down by regime shelling.

The U.N. Security Council met behind closed doors Wednesday to hear briefings from Annan's deputy Jean-Marie Guehenno and U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous.

Ladsous said Tuesday that there are strong suspicions that pro-Assad fighters were responsible for some of the killings, casting doubt on allegations that "third elements" ? or outside forces ? were involved, although he did not rule it out.

"We think the last 15 months have shown that inaction by the council has led to this vicious circle of violence," Germany's U.N. Ambassador Peter Wittig told reporters as he headed into the meeting.

Meanwhile, activists said Syrian troops shelled restive suburbs of Damascus and rebel-held areas in the central city of Homs on Wednesday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees said at least five people were killed in the Damascus suburb of Douma. Both groups had no details about casualties in Homs, which is the provincial capital of the province that includes Houla.

One of the Greatest Marriage Proposal Ever? The State of Black Love

.

The recent viral video of a random white dude proposing to his girlfriend sent chills down my spine. ?I am not a hopeless romantic, but I am hopelessly in love with the potential and future of the black family in America. ?For some reason, there was something about this video that lit a fuse in its viewers, leading me to reflect on some of the barriers that keep all of us from showing our best selves when we enter into relationships.

I am no relationship guru, but I resubmit that if Steve Harvey is qualified to talk about relationships, then so am I. When I speak with my daughters about love, I think about the bitterness that some of us can have from past disappointments, creating a tough shell of cold disregard to protect the most vulnerable part of our spirit. ?We enter relationships with itchy trigger fingers and toxic predispositions, causing us to wait for the other person to do something that will confirm that he/she is the dog that we expect that person to be.

In the black community, the lack of trust between men and women can sometimes turn love into war.? Starting with the first disappointments from the missing father or a college heartbreak, love can become an exercise of saving face and not being played, which is not conducive to building lasting families. ?As a result, divorce rates are through the roof, babymama-itis is at an all-time high, and STD rates are skyrocketing as people in their twenties and thirties bounce from one broken relationship to another.

Want to Keep Up With Str8Talkr.com? LIKE Us On Facebook!

What I enjoyed about this video is that there is something amazing that happens when one party doesn?t allow fear to keep him/her from expressing deep-seated affection for another person. ?The man in this video made himself look like a damn fool to show this woman how much he loves her. ?Not to say that we should get all of our cues from white people (you know how I feel about that, they are no better than us), but there is something that can be learned from everyone, and this guy teaches all of us a great lesson on love.

If your relationships consistently fall apart, or you find that your so-called love life has become a haven of treachery and emotional espionage, you might want to take a look in the mirror and determine if the person ?you see is emotionally equipped to take the risks necessary to experience true love. ?You must also determine if you are capable of identifying people who will reflect that love back at you and not selfishly absorb it in order to maintain control. ?Without taking risk, there is little reward, so you can?t expect to witness the highs of lasting love if you live life with your cards held close to your vest.

That?s what I learned from the random white dude proposing to his girlfriend.

How to Market Your Business for Sale | Best Outsourcing Partners

Balancing marketing plans while trying to keep a small business sale confidential can be tricky. Here?s how to target potential buyers quickly and discreetly.

Shutterstock

The most frequently asked question from those selling small businesses has to do with where and how to find buyers.

Small businesses are used to bootstrapping and implementing guerrilla tactics, and therefore they?re used to getting the word out via networking, flyers, even signs in windows?none of which works well in the business sale process. This is a time for discretion and confidentiality.

You need to offer your business for sale in a manner that doesn?t tip off customers, suppliers, creditors or employees. And most certainly you don?t want to let competitors know your sale plans?unless you?re considering a specific competitor as a likely buyer.

If you know a specific person or business that?s likely to buy your business, you can proceed with a confidential inquiry. To cast more widely for buyers, the only safe approach is to offer your business for sale discreetly and without identification, using brokers or blind ads to get the word out.

The following steps can help you sort through and decide on your options.

Step 1: Define the likely buyer of your business.

Remember the old line, ?Fish where the fish are biting?? In some ways, deciding where to advertise your business follows that age-old advice. Figure out who is most likely to buy your business, and then think about where and how you can best reach your prospects.

  • Is your business likely to sell to someone seeking to buy any business or a business specifically like yours?
  • Can?anyone?who is financially qualified buy your business or does the buyer need to have specific qualifications, credentials, or licenses?
  • Do you think your business is most apt to sell to an individual buyer, or to another business, or to an investor group?

Step 2: Determine how best to reach the likely buyer of your business.

The following chart helps you zero in on the person or business most likely to acquire your business, along with the marketing approaches most likely to reach the buyer you?ve defined.

When the buyer and seller are in the same market area the sale is called an ?intramarket transaction,? which describes the majority of all small business sales. Often these deals include a local broker, and almost always they involve online business-for-sale searches. Just as people search online for real estate in their own market areas, they also search the Internet for businesses for sale in their communities.

Step 3. Target your advertising efforts.

If you?re using a broker to sell your business, the marketing of your business becomes the broker?s responsibility. Still, it?s worth it to understand where buyers are looking for businesses so you?re in a good position to evaluate your broker?s marketing plan or, if you?re selling without an intermediary, to reach buyers on your own.

Match your likely buyer to one or several of the following descriptions to determine how best to reach your target audience.

  • Buyers interested only in business offerings in a specific market area?often work through local brokers. They also read local classified ads, and almost all search online listing sites, where they limit their searches to their desired market area. Many also ask bankers, accountants, attorneys or business leaders for leads, which you can tap into through very discreet networking, often working through the confidential relationship established with your accountant or attorney.
  • Buyers interested only in business offerings in a specific industry or professional arena most likely search online listing sites where they can customize their searches by business type, size, and location. They also read trade publications and sites. Most also network to seek leads, which you can cultivate by making confidential contacts with association executives in your industry or professional arena.
  • Buyers interested in a wide range of businesses over a far-flung area?almost certainly search online business-for-sale sites for opportunities.
  • Nine out of ten prospective buyers shop online listings, regardless of whether they?re working with a broker, whether they?re looking for businesses in a specific region or business arena, or whether they?re open to a wide range of business and geographic areas.

In next week?s installment of ?Selling Your Small Business? we?ll discuss writing ads that attract and pre-qualify buyers. ??

Editor?s Note: This article is the twelfth piece in a series taken from BizBuySell.com?s Guide to Selling Your Small Business. The guide is a comprehensive manual to help small business owners maximize their success when the day to sell arrives. Each Wednesday, Inc.com will publish a new section of the guide outlining BizBuySell.com?s best practices, from the initial planning stages of a sale all the way through negotiations and post-sale transition.

The Most Important Lesson Tim Cook Learned From Steve Jobs: ?Focus Is Key?

photoIn his first major public interview since replacing Steve Jobs as CEO, Tim Cook took the stage with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at the tenth annual All Things D conference to talk about the state of Apple. "Apple has gone through a tremendous change," Walt Mossberg segued into perhaps the most important question of the interview, "How is Apple different with you as the CEO?" "I learned a lot from Steve," Cook responded. "It was the saddest day of my life when he passed away. As much as you should see or predict that I really didn't. It's time to get on." Cook said that he most admired Jobs' "intense determination" and described him as "laser-focused." Cook also explained that the most important leadership lesson he learned from Jobs is that ?"'Focus is key' .. not just in running your company but in your personal life. You can only do certain things well."

'Olympic rings' molecule imaged

Researchers have succeeded in taking a stunning image of a newly synthesised molecule called olympicene.

The molecule - just over a billionth of a metre across - gets its name because its five linked rings resemble the Olympic symbol.

It was first made by collaborators at the University of Warwick in the UK.

They teamed up with IBM researchers, who in 2009 pioneered the technique of single-molecule imaging with its non-contact atomic force microscopy.

London 2012 - One extraordinary year

The team, based at IBM Research Zurich, announced its first success with a molecule called pentacene, five linked hexagonal rings of carbon all in a line.

But it was Professor Graham Richards CBE, former head of Oxford University's chemistry department and member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) council, who first conceived of the idea to create a more Olympic-themed molecule along the same lines.

"I was in a committee meeting of the Royal Society of Chemistry where we were trying to think of what we could do to mark the Olympics," Prof Richards told BBC News.

"It occurred to me that the molecule that I had drawn looked very much like the Olympic rings, and it had never been made."

University of Warwick researchers Anish Mistry and David Fox undertook the task of developing a chemical recipe for the molecule, and took preliminary images of it using a technique called scanning tunnelling microscopy.

But no approach gives such detailed images of single molecules as non-contact atomic force microscopy, in which a single, even tinier molecule of carbon monoxide is used as a kind of record needle to probe the grooves of molecules with unprecedented resolution.

The images show linked ring structures that are reminiscent both of the Olympic rings and a great many compounds made from rings of carbon atoms, including the "miracle material" graphene.

However, Prof Richards hopes that olympicene's greatest contribution to chemistry is to bring more students into it.

"Molecules of this nature could conceivably have commercial use, but my own feeling is that above all we want to excite an interest in chemistry provoked by the link with the Olympics," he said.

Three Cups Coffee Per Day Extend Life? | Food and Recipe Update

This is good news for you who like to drink coffee. One study indicates that adults who consume three or more cups of coffee a day tend to live longer. In fact, the risk of dying from the most common causes decreased by 10 percent than those who drank no coffee.

This is a large-scale research conducted by experts from the U.S. National Cancer Institute, which involved nearly 400,000 people. This finding applies to those aged 50-71 years both drinkers of caffeinated coffee or decaffeinated.

Research shows that coffee drinking was associated with a decreased risk of death from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, diabetes, infections, and injuries and accidents. However, researchers stress, contribute to improving the health of coffee consumption remains unclear. These findings do not establish causality.

?I think these findings are really important to point out that our study is an observational study. That is, we only ask how much they drank coffee and then watching them,? said lead researcher Neal Freedman, of the U.S. National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Md..

Freedman revealed that coffee drinkers tend to smoke more generally ? is the leading cause of death. ?We found that coffee drinkers tend to face a higher risk of death. But when we do not connect it with cigarettes, we found an inverse relationship.? he said.

The study was published on May 17, 2012 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

For this study, the researchers focused on the eating habits of 400,000 men and women involved in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study between 1995 and 1996. None of the participants had a history of cancer, stroke or heart disease.

Each participant was asked about their coffee consumption, ranging from zero to six cups a day or more. The health condition of participants tracked since 2008 or until death. The results showed that drinking even one cup of coffee a day was associated a lower risk of death.

But uniquely, drinking coffee is not associated with a decreased risk of cancer death in women, and only have a protective effect in men only. The protective effect appeared greater among those who drank more than one cup a day. Even so, Freedman noted, few benefits were seen in those who drank two cups a day and six cups a day.

?Going forward, we need to really look at the different components in coffee. In addition to caffeine, coffee contains about 1,000 other compounds and antioxidants, some of which may be beneficial and some not,? said Freedman.

Freedman added, and the way of presenting a good selection of coffee types also need to be explored further. ?We do not know if this also affects the progression of the disease,? he explained.

Freedman recommends, everyone should consult a doctor before starting to drink more coffee. The reason, personal health history can affect how much the amount of coffee consumption are allowed to receive.

Chinese officials crack bizarre cannibal case

Police in southwest China have detained a man suspected of murdering more than a dozen boys and young men, chopping up their bodies and selling the flesh to unsuspecting consumers, reports said Friday.

Police made the gruesome discovery during an investigation into the disappearances of male teenagers in Yunnan province in recent years, according to reports in Hong Kong and Chinese media.

Zhang Yongming, 56, was detained two weeks ago in his home village of Nanmen in Yunnan and is being investigated in the death of a 19-year-old man in late April and the disappearance of several others, the Guangxi News website reported.

Police searching Zhang's home found the young man's cellphone, bank card and other evidence, according to the website, which said more than a dozen other teenagers had gone missing from the village over the years.

It said Zhang, a loner who never talked to his neighbours, had previously served almost 20 years in jail for murder and was known in the village as the "cannibal monster."

And it quoted residents as saying they had seen green plastic bags hanging from his home, with what appeared to be white bones protruding from the top.

Hong Kong newspaper The Standard said police discovered human eyeballs preserved in wine bottles -- "like snake wine" -- and pieces of what appeared to be human flesh hanging up to dry when they entered Zhang's home.

Police feared that Zhang had fed human flesh to his three dogs, while selling other parts on the market, calling it "ostrich meat," according to The Standard.

Local police declined to comment, saying information would be made available "at an appropriate time," and almost all reports on the case were removed from Chinese websites as of Friday.

Online searches for the words "missing in Yunnan" were also blocked.

The official Xinhua news agency said Beijing had dispatched a team of experts to Yunnan to supervise the investigation into the missing teenagers, but did not refer to the gruesome details contained in other reports.

Families of the missing originally suspected they had been kidnapped and forced to work in illegal brick kilns, Xinhua said, adding two local police chiefs had been sacked and the government had urged a swift resolution to the case.

Cannibalism is a particularly sensitive subject in China, where it was practised as a survival tactic during periods of mass starvation -- as was the case in the wake of a failed industrialization drive launched in the late 1950s.

Discovery expected to shift research direction in lupus and asthma

ScienceDaily (May 27, 2012) ? Newfound details of the immune system suggest a role for never-before-considered drug classes in the treatment of allergic and autoimmune diseases, according to a University of Alabama at Birmingham study published online May 27 in Nature Immunology.

The results advance the current understanding of the way the body's initial, vague reaction to any invading organism expands into a precise and massive counterattack. That expansion starts when a dendritic cell "swallows" a piece of any invader encountered, ferries it to the nearest lymph node and presents it there for notice by lymphocytes, the workhorse cells of the immune system.

According to the current model, dendritic cells first must encounter T lymphocytes in the paracortex, or T cell zone, within the node. Only there will the interaction enable lymphocytes to expand into an army of clones primed to attack the invader.

To the research team's great surprise, the data showed that, although immune response works this way during viral flu infections, it is not always the case. When the body is infested with parasitic worms, for instance, dendritic cells link with T cells near B lymphocytes, under the control of B cell-related signals and outside the T cell zone.

"Considering that diseases from asthma to lupus can occur because the system mistakenly ramps up the same types of T cell responses it normally uses against worms, our finding that B lymphocytes control the T cell/dendritic cell interactions that trigger such responses has important, practical implications," said Frances Lund, Ph.D., chair of the UAB School of Medicine's Department of Microbiology and corresponding author. "The field now has cause to look at several experimental and existing drugs known to interrupt B cell signals as potential treatments for diseases driven by T cells."

Study details

Before joining UAB in March 2012, Lund worked alongside Tim Mosmann, Ph.D., at the University of Rochester Medical Center. In 1986 Mosmann advanced his groundbreaking theory on the way the immune system decides which sets of immune cells are most effective against different invader types. According to his Th1/Th2 model, Th1 T helper cells were best against viruses because they helped invaded human cells self-destruct before viruses could turn them into virus factories. Th2 helper T cells were best against parasites because they helped the B cells mass produce antibodies that glommed onto and removed worms from the spaces between cells.

The current study found that B cells, as part of the Th2 response to worms, start pumping out a protein called lymphotoxin, which in turn signals nearby stromal cells to produce more of the chemokine CXCL13.

B cells are able to gather in B cell areas of lymph nodes in the first place because they express CXCR5 receptor proteins that sense and move toward higher concentrations of CXCL13. The team discovered that a set of dendritic cells also begins expressing CXCR5 during a worm infection.

With B cells and activated dendritic cells gathered near B cells, T helper cells next must join the party if the immune response is to expand. While T cells dump into lymph nodes at many points, only those that happen to enter near B cells, and to bump into CXCR5-expressing dendritic cells, drive the response to worms forward, according to the authors.

The authors also believe such interactions trap T cells near the B cell area and that proximity determines the kind of cells they becomes next. Those receiving the strongest signals become the T helper follicular cells that B cells must partner with to produce antibodies specific to the current pathogen. Those getting weaker signals become Th2 effectors that travel back to the infection site to cause the histamine release and intestinal muscle contractions that help to expel worms.

Though vital to effective immune responses to worms, T helper follicular cells and Th2 cells have a dark side. For example, T helper follicular cells in some cases inappropriately help B cells produce high affinity "auto" antibodies that recognize the body's own cells as foreign and can destroy the kidneys of lupus patients and the joints of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

In other cases, Th2 cells respond to allergens in the lung like house dust mites because the mites look like worms to the immune system and the confused Th2 cells respond to the allergen as they would to a worm. This mistaken recognition causes histamine release and bronchoconstriction in the lungs, two of the major clinical symptoms of asthma.

"We know of experimental biologics that interrupt the ability of B cells to give off lymphotoxin and prevent the development of helper Th2 cells and T helper follicular cells," Lund said. "Could such antibody-based treatments be useful against some autoimmune diseases and asthma? We think so, but time and further studies will tell."

Along with Lund, Troy Randall, Ph.D., the Claude Bennett Scholar in the UAB Department of Medicine's Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, and UAB post-docs Beatriz Le?n, Ph.D., and Andr? Ballesteros-Tato, Ph.D., made major contributions to the work. Also making important contributions were Jeffrey Browning at Biogen Idec and Robert Dunn at the Pfizer Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (formerly at Biogen Idec). The study was supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Augusta National Does Not Even Take Second Place to Pine Valley ...

When it comes to golf courses that are among the most challenging and unique in the world of golfers one set of links often comes to mind Pine Valley of Camden New Jersey. Historically since 1913, Pine Valley has set the example of tough yet challenging.

Yet there have been golfers among the mix who have remarked at the most challenging holes on this golfing course that perhaps they should take a photo of the hole rather than play it. This way at least they might have their memories, yet retain set of golf clubs and balls intact and in order. Never mind their poise and reputation on the golf links and fairways of their travels in the world of sport and recreation.

In one quick glance, the eager golfer saw a beautiful but forbidding hole and he reacted like many with glee.

Variety is endless at this heaven on the golfing tour, adding both to each golfers pleasure or ultimate frustrations. No two tees turn to the same point on the compass and almost every single hole and vantage offers a scenic view that resembles any place but suburban Philadelphia. There are no unnatural hazards, no out of bounds and no hidden bunkers. Every bit of trouble is alarmingly, in view, just as Mother Nature, in her most devilish and beguiling mood might and would have placed it.

It is precisely these tough but fair qualities that have made Pine Valley a most renowned as well as revered course, being a great collection and rare collection of great golf holes itself. It is rare that the name Pine Valley is often spoke of with great reverence among the worlds most experienced and avid golf nuts and enthusiasts.

The club itself has been the source of much humor and dry humor at that in the golfing communities. It was repeatedly said by the very likes of the classic golfer Arnold Palmer that Pine Valley is not so tough if you can hit the ball straight, keep it out of the sand and putt reasonably well.

It can be said that you never forget your first love and you never forget the golf games played that you dreamt of or played out at Pine Valley Golf Club on the eastern seaboard of the US.

Posed for a major upgrade the Lake Manitoba Narrows region is not only a hunting and giant Canadian Pike fishing wonderland but will also include major planned for upgrades including a conference hall for sales and marketing conventions , a golf course as well as a whole host of major amenities. Google names names on copyright takedowns; Microsoft is #1

Dashboard view of the new data

Who complains loudest about Google linking to infringing content in its search results? The movie and music industries, of course, who absolutely delight in taking whacks at the search engine. But thanks to a huge new trove of data released today by Google, we know that the worldwide top takedown requestor?by far?is actually Microsoft.

If content owners claim that a Google search result links to infringing material, Google will remove the link. But just how many times does this happen?and who is making all the requests? Google today rolled out an upgrade to its "Transparency Report" that shows private copyright takedown information in addition to the usual government requests for user information or for censorship.

In the last month, Google's search engine has received requests to remove links to 1.13 million URLs hosted on 23,000 distinct domains. (Takedown requests to YouTube and other Google properties are not covered under the current data release.) I spoke to Fred von Lohmann, senior copyright counsel at Google, who said that the company does in fact remove 97 percent of the requested links after running them through both algorithmic and human review to catch mistakes or bad faith notices. The average turnaround time for a takedown is 11 hours, which von Lohmann called "the best in the industry."

The data, which is updated constantly, provides an intriguing look behind the scenes at the takedown process. Though Google has long sent takedown requests to the Chilling Effects website for storage, they were difficult to mine for aggregate data. The new interface makes wider analysis possible.

The data shows that, since July 2011, 2.5 million takedown requests have been filed on behalf of Microsoft. NBC Universal, the next highest, made only 985,000. Third are the RIAA member labels with 417,000, and the numbers trail off quickly from there.

Copyright owners with most takedown requests

Google's data also shows that many of these takedown requests don't come directly from rightsholders, either; copyright enforcement companies with names like DtecNet and Takedown Piracy LLC, which make a business from providing such services, account for most of the actual requests.

The companies that actually filed the complaints

As for why Google released the new takedown data, von Lohmann told me that the company wants to be more transparent, but it also wants to "make sure that policymakers have the data they need to make good decisions." Reading between the lines, we might suspect this to be a play for lawmakers, who keep hearing about Google like it's a rogue entity on issues like copyrights and patents. (Google hasn't helped itself by having some real problems, like the notorious "pharmacy ads" investigation for which the company coughed up $500 million to the US government.)

Von Lohmann also confirmed to me that Google doesn't accept takedowns uncritically. While most are granted, Google rejects some for not including the proper information and a small number on the grounds that the content is not actually infringing. This can be a gutsy call to make, since under US law, Google loses its "safe harbor" for those links and could be sued directly by the rightsholder for not removing them.

In a blog post announcing the new data, von Lohmann noted, "We recently rejected two requests from an organization representing a major entertainment company, asking us to remove a search result that linked to a major newspaper?s review of a TV show. The requests mistakenly claimed copyright violations of the show, even though there was no infringing content."

So good for Google both in standing up (occasionally) to abusive takedown requests and for releasing the new data. Thanks to the new release we know that, while The Pirate Bay is widely demonized, the site receiving the greatest number of requests to be pulled from Google's index is actually filestube.com. And we know that requests pour in from all over the globe, including from unexpected sources like the Yale International Relations Association.

Prosecutors want to halt incentives for WCup venue

By TALES AZZONI

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:41 p.m. ET May 25, 2012

SAO PAULO (AP) - Prosecutors asked a judge Friday to suspend fiscal incentives for the construction of the Sao Paulo stadium that will host the 2014 World Cup opener.

Prosecutors said the incentives were illegally granted by the city of Sao Paulo to the Brazilian club Corinthians and the construction company in charge of building the 65,000-seat venue.

The move could delay construction at the stadium and eventually jeopardize the playing of World Cup soccer in Brazil's financial center and South America's biggest city.

Sao Paulo state prosecutor Marcelo Camargo Milani said in his request that the city "flagrantly violated constitutional principles such as morality and legality," transferring "public capital to private entities."

The prosecutors' office also wants the judge to apply fines of about $855 million to the city, Corinthians and the construction company Odebrecht.

The city said it will fully cooperate to prosecutors, while Corinthians and Odebrecht said they will comment only after being officially notified about the prosecutors' legal action.

Prosecutors said the city did not follow proper procedure to hand out the incentives and made irregular changes to current regulations so it could facilitate the stadium construction.

Milani also asks the judge to cancel the political rights of Sao Paulo Mayor Gilberto Kassab because the alleged irregularities happened during his administration. Milani said the parties directly benefiting from the incentives were Corinthians and Odebrecht.

FIFA initially said Morumbi Stadium would be used during the World Cup, but it eventually said the project lacked enough financial guarantees. Critics said it was a political decision because of an alleged spat between Ricardo Teixeira, then the Brazilian soccer federation president, and Sao Paulo club officials.

Corinthians, Brazil's second-most popular team behind Flamengo, said it would build a stadium, but for only 48,000 people, which would not be enough to host the opener or other later-stage matches.

Local World Cup organizers, the government and club officials eventually reached an agreement, giving the fiscal incentives to facilitate the venue's construction for 65,000.

The stadium was the last to get off the drawing board, and construction began only about a year ago. Work at the venue in Sao Paulo's poor east side is about 30 percent completed, according to the Brazilian government and local organizers. It is expected to be finished by December 2013.

The stadium will host five World Cup matches in addition to the opener, including one semifinal. It will not host matches in next year's Confederations Cup.

Stadium construction is estimated at $400 million, with $195 million coming from loans from the Brazilian Development Bank.

The loans have been criticized because Brazilian officials said when the country was picked to host the World Cup in 2007 that only private money would be used to build stadiums. It also remains possible the government will help pay for the 17,000 seats that were added to the stadium project so it could host the opener.

The unmanned Falcon 9 blasted off at 3:44 a.m. EDT (0744 GMT) from here at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, carrying the Dragon capsule filled with cargo bound for the International Space Station. Also packed aboard the rocket was a secondary payload carrying remains from 308 people, including Doohan and Mercury program astronaut Gordon Cooper, according to ABC News and Reuters.

The ashes were flown under an agreement between the spacecraft's builder, private rocket company SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corp. of Hawthorne, Calif.) and Celestis, a company that books memorial spaceflights to "launch a symbolic portion of your loved one's ashes into space," according to its website.

"We had a Celestis canister on the second stage, not on Dragon," SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said at a news conference after the launch. "They've actually been a customer of ours since 2005 or 2006."

The Falcon 9 rocket's second stage separated from the capsule nine minutes and 49 seconds into the flight, and is now orbiting on its own above Earth. The second stage will likely stay in orbit for about a year before it falls back toward the ground and is burned up during re-entry. [Photos: SpaceX's Dragon Launches to Space Station]

In addition to the human ashes, SpaceX's Falcon 9/Dragon flight launched about 1,014 pounds (460 kilograms) of cargo for the space station, including food and supplies for the crew, student-designed science experiments, computer equipment and commemorative souvenirs like mission patches and pins.

Burial in space

Celestis charges $2,995 to launch 1 gram of a person's ashes to Earth orbit. Deep space launches to the solar system start at $12,500, while suborbital flights that return to Earth begin at $995.

The human remains payload was not officially announced by SpaceX before today, although news reports publicized the inclusion of the ashes onboard Falcon 9.

How Media Attention Benefits You!

You may wonder how all this publicity benefits you as an individual Accredited Staging Professional?

While Staging certainly has gained a lot of ground since the early days when I created the concept of Staging, but many consumers, and even real estate industry professionals, are still not fully aware of the benefits of Staging homes. Each time an article is published we raise awareness of Staging in general, and of course Accredited Staging Professionals? specifically. Each time I?m interviewed I always make a point to highlight our most current Staging statistics. Our most current statistics shows that 94% of homes Staged by an Accredited Staging Professional? sell in 29 days or less, compared to an average of 145 days for homes that are not Staged. Homes Staged by Accredited Staging Professionals? stay on the market 83% less time than a home that has not been staged. That information has a tremendous impact when it?s published as many consumers and even REALTORS? may not be aware what a difference Staging makes. I also always mention that Stagedhomes.com features both a national and international directory of Accredited Staging Professionals? and a directory of Staged homes on the market.

As you can see, the national and international publicity we receive helps you both indirectly, as more and more become educated on Staging, and directly when consumers and REALTORS? look for a Stager in their local market.

It is my honor to always be working for you.

Top 7 Tips for a Profitable Small Business | Best Income Source

Every business of large magnitude and size today started off as a small business at one time in the past. In fact, it is well-known to the experts and industrialists that it is the small businesses that contribute more than the large business to local and regional economies. Small businesses are common in every country and are diversified in nature, covering all manner of product and service offerings. Many of the ancillary companies that support larger companies are, in fact, smaller companies, and are crucial to the continued success of those large businesses. For all those who want to start and run a small business, here are 7 important tips that will help make it profitable:

Target a Niche: Businesses thrive because of their unique feature offerings. To make a profitable small business, one has to identify the niche of the market to start the business in. This helps in not only future growth but sustainability until the break even takes place. When you offer a unique product or service to a well-targeted niche, you?ll find it easier to establish a solid and loyal customer base.

Investment: The investments you make to get off the ground do not have to be of exorbitant amounts. Yet, adequate care has to be taken in investing the funds. It is advisable to choose less risky investments than taking bigger ones. Be sure, for instance, when you are shopping for office space to make sure the rates fit comfortably within your budget, allowing you to still absorb any unexpected costs that might arise.

Competition: Identify the competition in the market even before the business is started. By observing the dynamics of competition, one can know how to go about promoting the products and services. You can, in fact, learn from what your competition is doing. What are they doing that works? What are they doing that doesn?t work? By examining this you can cut through a lot of trial and error and get right at what will let you hit the ground running.

Quality Not Quantity: The small business has to focus on the quality of the products being produced than the quantity. Good quality sweets can be sold faster and the word of mouth communication happens instantly. Your small business? offering must be of great quality. The simple charm of a small business is not enough to sustain long term growth if the product or service is weak, especially if you are competing with much larger companies in the same place.

Open for future: A small business doesn?t remain small forever, enough plans for future expansions and growth prospects have to be made even at the first step of starting the business. This helps greatly in tackling future problems well in advance.

Documentation: All the documents right from agreements with the vendors, logistics, lease of office, material, etc. has to be done perfectly. This all would serve as a good foundation for the business to grow in the future.

Brand Image: It is important to build up a good image for your products and services and the company, itself, as it grows. The brand image will be identified by the quality of the products and services by the customers. This would greatly help for future growth of the firm.

A good small business firm should opt for building a good reputation and image in the market. There are many companies that fail to make profits as they focus more on the profits instead of making immediate success in the short-term. If the company would provide quality products and services and earn a good brand image as a good company, profits would automatically flow.
