The Windsor Youth Centre (the WYC) helps youth in Windsor between the ages of 16 and 20 who are homeless or who don?t have a safe or reliable place to call home. They provide food, clothing, personal hygiene, info about shelter, referral to other agencies, a safe place to hang out from 5 ? 10 pm every night, homework help, and more. On August 29 & 30, from 6-9pm both days at 1942 Wyandotte St E, join professional tattoo artist?Jon Jimenez?and professional artistJason Deary?for a 2-day extensive workshop covering the basics of graffiti, its history, and how to bring it from an outdoor wall into a gallery.
August 29 will be in seminar format and August 30 will be a day of studio painting time with help and advice from the professionals. Works created on this day will be on exhibition in ArtSpeak Gallery ?from September 1-8.
Registration is $20, which includes both days of the workshop, paint supplies (including spray, tips, markers, paint, canvas, boards, etc) and exhibition space in the gallery.

Art Lounge in August launches the second edition of the unique?Windsor Rock Wall?experiment, developed and organized by Tom Lucier, co-owner of?Phog Lounge. While the?Rock Wall?is installed?at the AGW,?Lucier will actively expand the project based on input from local musicians.
Tom Lucier states: ?The?Windsor Rock Wall?contains any band that has played live shows? even if it was just one time, as long as it was in front of a crowd. We accepted all genres of music, including cover bands, from any era. So far, rock has dominated, but pop, metal, screamo, electronic, folk, country, jazz, blues and more all have found their way onto the Wall. As long as the roots of the band was/is in Windsor/Essex, it?s fair game.?

As the air turns crisp and the autumn equinox approaches, three songwriters take the stage at the Mackenzie Hall Gallery (3277 Sandwich St,519-255-7600) for an evening of songs and stories on Saturday, September 15th. Newfoundland troubadour Ian Foster joins up with Toronto?s Shawna Caspi and Windsor?s Allison Brown for an eclectic mix of acoustic music ranging from folk to Celtic influences to the roots of country and blues. ?September Songs? mark both Ian and Shawna?s first Windsor performances as they tour together through Ontario this fall. Join three of Canada?s most intriguing songwriters as they take to the stage together ?in the round? for a night of music harvested through a variety of acoustic folk traditions.
Ian Foster is familiar with the cycle of a song. Since 2006, the Newfoundland-based songwriter has been writing, recording and touring his work around Canada and Europe. His latest release, The Evening Light, showcases songs inspired by the road, and by an examination of home that can only be made from the distance of travel. His music combines many of the classic elements of folk songwriting and storytelling with newer approaches to the genre. His albums contain a mix of traditional instruments (banjo, upright bass, accordion, violin and cello all appear on his newest release) and modern instruments and effects. He regularly plays both electric and acoustic live, making tasteful use of looping and delay effects to create a bigger sound than one would expect from a solo player. A road warrior, Ian spends about half of every year playing shows, festivals, and conferences abroad, and regular shows all year long in his home province. His music has been played on radio internationally, from Newfoundland to the Netherlands. He has been nominated for multiple MusicNL (Newfoundland) and ECMA (East Coast Music Awards) over the last few years (including SOCAN Songwriter of the Year), and has been a finalist in the ISC (International Songwriting Competition), based out of Nashville, TN. He also has numerous co-writing credits, including one with the legendary folk songwriter Ron Hynes. One can expect a dynamic live show, with regular stories interspersed throughout a set, adding a level of insight into the songs that can only come from an ?in the flesh? performance. ~www.ianfoster.ca~
Toronto?s Shawna Caspi is a guitar-picking, classically-trained folkie with a sweet-tooth for a good story, a sly lyrical wit, and a rich, powerful voice. Shawna sings about love, travel, home, and heart, distilling each experience into a series of vibrant snapshots, coloured with humour and grace and arranged with care and craft. Her sophomore release, Skyline, showcases her clever storytelling and skillful fingerpicking guitar style. Shawna teeters between city girl life and the small town fantasies that come from weaving in and out of Canada?s colourful landscapes. Her 2012 release, Skyline, takes the listener from Shawna?s hometown of Ottawa, Ontario to her current base in Toronto, and out on the highway, through farmers? markets, bus stations, and alleyways, dodging lightning and passing rooftops peeking out through the trees, from sinking boats to subway cars, from a spectacular planetary crash to the peace that comes after the last flame is extinguished. ~www.shawnacaspi.com~
Windsor roots songstress Allison Brown likes her religion a little bit gritty, takes her country music with a side of syrup and keeps her folk as dusty as the ol? cabin floor. With a hatful of broken hearts, bad weather, toils of the road and leaps of faith, Allison?s crafted originals matched with classic roots repertoire reflect the striking conviction she brings to her sweet and powerful singing. Allison brings her truest self to her collection of songs and to the stage in a refreshing conversation with the audience. A Souwesto songbird with a big voice, Allison offers a clear channel for other Canadian independent musicians operating below the mainstream radar. The WindsorEssex Community Foundation and the City of Windsor with funding from the Canadian Department of Heritage is inviting artists to participate in a mural project in Olde Sandwich Towne. There will be two murals created and installed as part of this project.
The murals need to focus on the commemoration of the war of 1812, helping our community to celebrate 200 years of Peace between Canada and the United States of America in an interesting and unique way.
Project Intent:
As part of Windsor?s commemoration of the War of 1812, two murals will be created. One is to be located in Patterson Park (marked with yellow star on attached map) and the other is to be located in Mill Street Park (marked with yellow star on attached map). Application may be made by an individual artist or by a group of artist collaborators. Applications may be made for one or both of the locations of the mural project.
Eligibility:
The competition is open to artists living within Canada.
Budget:
Total budget for the murals project is $25,000 or $12,500 per mural. This fee will be inclusive of all project costs including but not limited to:
Artist fees:
General administration expenses
All materials and labour
Fabrication costs including third contracted or third party fees
Shipping, delivery and installation costs including equipment rentals, labour, utility locates, structural/foundation work (foundation needs to consider wind load) Stamped engineering drawings need to be provided to City of Windsor staff prior to the installation of the piece
Selection criteria:
(25%) Sensitivity and relevance to the commemoration of the War of 1812 and 200 years of Peace between Canada and the United States of America
(25%) Creativity of approach
(25%) Technical Capacity to include : Durability and maintenance requirements, understanding of project and methodology
(25%) Experience to include: capacity to plan and execute a large scale mural, quality of work as demonstrated in documentation of past work
Site Considerations:
Both locations within Olde Sandwich Towne are within community parks and as such consideration must be taken in terms of potential vandalism and graffiti.
There is no requirement for the mural to fill a huge area, but scale is important and attention must be paid to the park setting. The piece can be as large as the artist wishes with the understanding that the artist will be required to provide engineer stamped drawings of their proposed design and installation procedures in order to ensure a secure foundation. Wind loads must also be taken into consideration.
The selected mural will not feature any nudity, contemporary political themes or religious imagery, nor will it promote violence, hatred, or contempt against any group on the basis of colour, race, ancestry, religion, or ethnic origin.

The Mural Selection Committee may consist of a representative from: Olde Sandwich Towne BIA, Sandwich Teen Advisory Group (STAG), the Arts Council of Windsor and Region, the City of Windsor, the Community Public Art Advisory Committee and the WindsorEssex Community Foundation.

Dr. Lorenzo Buj presents a user friendly introduction to the kinds of debates that shape contemporary art practice. Through visual presentations and selected readings from classical and contemporary aesthetics, this course examines a number of hot button issues in art and visual culture: is the defence of aesthetic beauty an inherently conservative position, what does the digital age mean for traditional art values, where do artists locate themselves in cultural battles over religious symbols, has race?based or gender driven identity politics played itself out in contemporary art practice?
Dr. Lorenzo Buj received an M.A from the University of Windsor and A Ph. D from the University of Michigan. Since then he has taught at various institutions, offering courses in English literature as well as the visual arts and general humanities. He also writes art criticism.

Course Description: Lithography is the most direct form of printmaking. The immediacy of the artist s hand is kept throughout the process. One can achieve a broad range of effects, from fine line drawing to transparent washes or deep rich areas of color. Course Description: The freedom of collagraph relief printmaking gives many creative possibilities. If it can be inked, it can be printed. Found objects from nature, like dried fruit, leaf, and flattened street trash can combine with painterly marks from glues and gesso to create a collage plate. These plates are versatile and can be printed as a gauffrage (un-inked embossing), hand-colored as a wood block, or printed as a viscosity. Bring materials that are interesting to the first class. No previous printmaking experience is necessary. There will be demonstrations as well as, individualized instruction. Limited to eight students
Materials: Course cost includes all materials except for paper and drawing implements. Printmaking paper can be purchased by the sheet at Windsor Printmaker s Forum or students may bring their own. Materials list will be provided at the time of registration.

Course Description:
Relief printing is the oldest form of printmaking. The most common form of relief printing is woodcut. In this course students will experience three different materials and techniques e.g. wood cut, wood engraving, and lino cut. Many other materials can be used as the block or plate. Linoleum has a similar effect to those of woodcut, but with a thick, sluggish feel. A drawing is made on a wood block or Linoleum. The artist cuts away the undrawn areas, leaving image areas raised. Printing ink is applied to the raised surface and a sheet of paper is laid on the block to take an impression by hand or a press. Students will learn how to print in single and multiple colors. In this class students will learn fundamental to
intermediate level. No previous printmaking experience is necessary. There will be demonstrations as well as, individualized instruction. Class limited to eight students.
Materials: Course cost includes all materials except for paper and drawing implements. Printmaking paper can be purchased by the sheet at Windsor Printmaker s Forum or students may bring their own. Materials list will be provided at the time of registration.

The Ontario Arts Council
The Ontario Arts Council is launching an initiative to incubate the next generation of media arts organizations in regional communities across the province. The Regional Media Artists? Collectives Initiative will provide start-up funding to collectives of three or more local artists who wish to provide professional development opportunities in communities where there are no existing media arts artist-run production centres.
This initiative encourages artists who live in regional and rural areas to gather with colleagues to share work and learn from each other. It affords them access to low cost, but vital, equipment resources. It creates a forum for them to determine the needs in their communities and envision their future collectively.

Mike Marcon presents mixed-media installations involving themes related to Canadian identity to coincide with the ongoing War of 1812 bicentennial celebrations. Marcon?s work explores the notion of the wilderness as a privileged space, a ?kind of masculine homeland within the greater framework of the nation state?. Found objects, images and sculpture act as a catalyst for the displacement of symbols and myths that continue to inform our ?official? national identity. The juxtaposition of objects and images create a labyrinthine experience and stimulates critical reflection while situating these myths within the viewers? personal narratives.

Whitdel Arts presents?Trashion. ?This exhibition features unique garments, showcasing the Detroit designer?s ability to create inventive forms of fashion, while being resourceful and environmentally conscious. ?Designers have created their pieces from found objects gathered from within the city of Detroit. ?Reusing such objects has challenged them to create within the constraints of unconventional materials.? The source of these materials simultaneously challenges the viewer?s perception of recycled, unconventional.

Born from the womb of one crafty mother, Tiffany Best has always found comfort among fabric scraps, paint, paper and thread.? As a child, she avidly cut her school clothes?to her mom?s despair?to create ensembles only she found pretty and cool.? When Tiffany is not busy operating the weekend artist & vintage market she founded with her husband,?The Rust Belt Market,?you can find her elbow deep in paper mache and toiling away on crazy projects from paper walls to a wasp?s nest corset. ??Her work has been featured in?HEARD Magazine, Fall in Love with Fashion, The Woods Gallery, and Little Monster?s Toy Boutique.? Re Emergence: Then and Now

This August, Whitdel Arts will be presenting?Re Emergence: Then and Now, a mixed compilation of fine art from featured artist, David O?Dell, in the [WA] emergence gallery.? The exhibition will kick-off with an artist?s reception from 6-9 p.m., Friday, August 10.
Re Emergence: Then and Now?will feature past and current pieces by the artist, including silkscreen prints, paintings and intaglio prints. The featured works showcase the artist?s influences throughout the decades ? incorporating abstract period prints, and more recent works representing the transformation of simpler machines by the digitization of the world and its technological progressions.
?This exhibition is a great opportunity to showcase some of my favorite pieces of fine art that I?ve created up to this point in time,? said O?Dell. ?My work has evolved through the years and this show pays homage to those unique, creative periods while demonstrating the evolution of life, people and its objects, presenting them in abstract and various other forms.?
O?Dell has been featured in art shows and fairs around Michigan, winning numerous awards and recognition for his work, including first place at Royal Oak?s Arts, Beats and Eats in 2009. In addition, he has won numerous regional and national awards for graphic design and photography.
He began his career silkscreening more than 30 years ago, designing posters for national events and entertainers such as Diana Ross, James Taylor, Willie Nelson, John Lennon and various others. Before creating his own limited editions O?Dell screened limited edition prints and fine art posters for various artists.
Currently, O?Dell teaches Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop programs for fashion design at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Troy, Mich. Previously, O?Dell worked as a graphic designer for graphics firms, printing companies and colleges, and also was a senior graphic designer for Kmart and Sears Brands, LLC.
O?Dell earned a Bachelor of Science in art from Ball State University, and recently completed a Masters in Art with a concentration in printmaking from Wayne State University. He and his wife, Sue, live in Lake Orion, Mich.

Neil Simon?s Jake?s Women will open the 54th season for University of Windsor?s University Players in September.
University Players is the performing arm of the School of Dramatic Art, and features students in their third and fourth years. Plays take place at Essex Hall on the main campus.
The season continues in October with Agatha Christie?s The Hollow.
