Michael C. Moore joins Bigelow Investment Advisors ? Business ...

PORTLAND, Maine ? Michael C. Moore has joined Bigelow Investment Advisors as vice president of investments. Moore majored in accounting at the University of Georgia and became an investment analyst and portfolio manager for various firms, most recently for Maverick Capital in New York. After moving to Maine in 2004, he served as endowment investment officer for Bowdoin College. At Bigelow, Moore will help firm president Kathryn Dion manage the assets of individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations. Moore lives in Cape Elizabeth with his wife and three children. He has volunteered as a bereavement counselor for the Center for Grieving Children, and sits on its board of directors. He also serves on the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust, and is chairman of the Finance Committee of the Cape Elizabeth School Board. He enjoys fly-fishing, snowboarding and kayaking.

Maine Board of Education member appointed to national panel

AUGUSTA, Maine ? Steve Pound, vice chairman of the Maine State Board of Education and associate director for work force development at Cianbro, has been chosen to serve with a national panel of experts on a group that will examine how students learn and demonstrate their knowledge.

The Deeper Learning Focus Group will hold a series of meetings targeting what students learn, how they learn it and how they demonstrate their knowledge. Deeper Learning is a teaching method that involves a more rigorous and student-focused curriculum than under traditional teaching strategies. It also involves learning that is research-driven rather than textbook-driven, critical thinking and problem-solving activities, effective communication, collaboration and students monitoring and directing their own work.

The Deeper Learning Focus Group is made up of state legislators, high-ranking officials from state education departments, members of state boards of education, local school district administrators, education advisers to mayors and governors and representatives from national education agencies and corporate partners. At its inaugural meeting March 8-10, the group began developing a list of state and local policies and practices that will ensure Deeper Learning strategies are embedded in classrooms across the country. The group meets again April 26-28, after which a report will be issued that will provide a framework for actions that can be taken by state policymakers to incorporate the principles of Deeper Learning in public education.

The Deeper Learning Focus Group is funded through a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation with additional support from CSG?s 21st Century Foundation.

Monique Gaudet joins iBec Creative as interactive coordinator

PORTLAND, Maine ? Monique Gaudet has joined iBec Creative as its interactive coordinator, responsible for overseeing all new websites from conception to completion. Gaudet will act as project manager for all aspects of the Web design and launch process, including client relations, creative development, testing and presentation. Gaudet graduated from the University of Hartford in 1999 with a bachelor of arts in communication. She resides in Portland.

Lovell named chair of American College of Trust and Estate Counsel

PORTLAND, Maine ? Karen Lovell, an attorney with Bernstein Shur, has been named the Maine state chair of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a nonprofit association of lawyers that makes contributions to the field of trusts and estates law through writing, teaching and bar leadership activities. The college president appointed Lovell on March 11.

Lovell specializes in estate planning, trust and estate administration and probate litigation. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and received her JD from the University of Maine School of Law. She is a past chair of the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar, served as public administrator for York County, is a fellow of the Maine Bar Foundation, a member of the Board of Trustees of Thornton Academy, a member of the Maine Estate Planning Council, and a corporater of Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution. She resides in Saco.

DeLorme names vice president and general manager

Rhonda Ferrara named senior vice president of risk and compliance at Androscoggin Bank

Rhonda Ferrara joined the Androscoggin Bank team as senior vice president of risk and compliance, where she will be overseeing the development, implementation and administration of the Androscoggin Bank risk management program. Rhonda brings more than 10 years of risk management experience focused on regulatory compliance, audit and internal control functions. S.W. Cole Engineering Inc. engineer receives professional engineer license

BANGOR, Maine ? Geotechnical engineer Evan M. Walker recently became S.W. Cole Engineering Inc.?s newest licensed professional engineer. Walker, who is based in the firm?s Gray office, took the test administered by the State of Maine Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers in October. The Gray office has three professional engineers on its staff, and the company has a total of 12 in its six offices. Walker earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Maine and joined the firm in 2007. His primary responsibilities include coordination and field monitoring of subsurface exploration programs, geotechnical analysis and design calculations, preparation of engineering proposals and reports and coordination of laboratory soils testing.

Beaulieu joins Allen Insurance

A native of Brewer, Beaulieu is a graduate of the University of Maine in Orono with a dozen years experience in the financial services industry. He has worked in Florida as director of wealth management for Riverside Bank of the Gulf Coast and in Maine as a financial consultant for Union Trust and as statewide manager of financial services for Prudential Financial. In 1990, Beaulieu?s father Gary was the company?s first financial adviser and played a key role in establishing financial services as an integral part of the company. He retired in 2003.
