51s' starter Gulin shuts down Portland

Uses two-run sixth to hold off Beavers

51s starting pitcher Lindsay Gulin has not been getting much run support lately, but he got just enough Sunday.

An ailing Gulin, who earlier this season threw a no-hitter at Cashman Field, gutted out six innings and struck out eight before Las Vegas scored two runs in the bottom of the inning en route to beating the Portland Beavers 2-1 at Cashman.

"He had his changeup working as his effective pitch," 51s manager John Shoemaker said. "He was scheduled to keep on pitching, but he wasn't feeling well."

Gulin (10-8), who was coming off consecutive scoreless outings, allowed one run, four hits and a walk.

In the sixth, the 51s (69-58) loaded the bases with one out against starter Mike Bynum. A walk to Chris Clapinski forced in Jason Romano, and Rick Bell greeted Portland reliever Matt Hampton with a sacrifice fly to give the 51s the lead.

"We had some baserunners, but we didn't get that key hit," Shoemaker said.

Agustin Montero pitched a scoreless seventh for the 51s, and David Lee worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth. Steve Colyer finished for his 20th save.

Portland's run came in the fourth when Xavier Nady homered to right, one of six hits for the Beavers (62-67).

Shane Victorino, Joe Thurston and Daryle Ward had two hits each for Las Vegas.

The teams conclude their series tonight at 7:05 p.m. The 51s begin a five-game series Tuesday at Sacramento.

? NOTES -- Portland's Clay Condrey (3-2, 3.30 ERA) goes against Tom Farmer (1-1, 4.41 ERA) tonight. Las Vegas leads the season series, 9-6. ... Gulin's last two starts came at New Orleans on Aug. 5 in a no-decision, and at Memphis on Aug. 12 in a win. He went six and five innings, respectively.
