Odwalla Recalls Chocolate Protein Monster Drink - Food Safety News

Reports from consumers who said they had allergic reactions to Odwalla Chocolate Protein Monster have prompted the company to issue a nationwide allergy alert and recall.

In a news release Friday, Odwalla said it was contacted by four individuals who were not known to be allergic to soy and milk but said they were allergic to peanuts or tree nuts and who reportedly had "severe allergic reactions" after consuming Chocolate Protein Monster.chocolate-milk-close-iphone.jpg

Although the drink is not supposed to contain peanuts or tree nuts, and Odwalla says the facility where it is produced does not make products that include peanuts, the company decided to recall the product while continuing to investigate the cause of the reactions.

So far, "while we have found no evidence of peanuts or tree nuts in the product at this point," the company said it decided to act with "an abundance of caution to safeguard consumers" in issuing the nationwide alert and recalling the chocolate protein beverage.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts or tree nuts run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume products that contain them.

The recalled Odwalla Chocolate Protein Monster was?sold in 12 oz. and 32 oz. re-sealable plastic packaging labeled as "Chocolate Protein Soy and Dairy Protein Shake" and "Protein Monster." ?The beverage?must be kept refrigerated. The recall includes all "enjoy-by" dates prior to May 23, 2012 (the dates are printed on the neck of the bottles) with the specific UPC codes listed below:

- Odwalla Chocolate Protein Monster 12 oz. bottles UPC Code: 14054 13509

- Odwalla Chocolate Protein Monster 32 oz. bottles UPC Code: 14054 13504

- Odwalla Protein Monster variety pack (sold exclusively at Costco) 12 oz. bottles, four?

of which are Odwalla?Chocolate Protein Monster UPC Code: 0 14054 26659 6

The recalled beverages were distributed nationwide through retail food stores and on-premise foodservice establishments during the last seven weeks.?

Consumers who are allergic to peanuts or peanuts and tree nuts may return the recalled bottles to the place of purchase for a full refund.?
